MELBOURNE TO WANGARATTA

Welcome to our special 4 day tour to Opera in the Alps and North Eastern Victoria. Departing home this morning we make our way to Nagambie where we board the Goulburn Explorer for our cruise down to Tahbilk Winery – one of Australia’s most beautiful and historic wineries. We have arranged lunch here before re-joining our coach to continue on to Wangaratta. Unpack just once as this is home for the next 3 nights.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel, WANGARATTA

DAY 1 Thursday 12th March, 2020

ALBURY

We cross the border into NSW today, to Albury, separated from its twin city Wodonga in Victoria by the Murray River. Prominent hills lie at each end of Dean Street and offer excellent vistas of Albury and the surrounds. One aptly named Eastern Hill and the other Monument Hill, as a memorial Pillar (to the Soldiers of WWI) was erected on this hill. The views from the Monument are stunning. Next we make our way down to the Albury Botanical Gardens, featuring an impressive plant collection of both native and exotic origins. We then see Albury Railway Station which, in 1883, became a “change over station” for passengers between Melbourne and Sydney due to the different rail gauge used in NSW and Victoria. Next we visit the Bonegilla Migrant Experience. The migrant experience features the remnant huts and buildings of "Block 19" one of the original 24 accommodation blocks and other buildings that once covered a 130 ha area. The original complex was built as the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre in 1947 and until 1971 served as Australia's largest and longest operating migrant centre. It was the first Australian home for more than 300,000 post war migrants from over 50 countries. After lunch we’ll visit the Murray Arts Museum Albury (MAMA). Every corner of MAMA is bold, vibrant and alive. Along with an emphasis on innovative, self-curated exhibitions, MAMA features a stunning 24-hour 'art skin', interactive workshops and immersive cultural experiences. MAMA re-imagines what a gallery can be.

ALPINE COUNTRY AND OPERA IN THE ALPS

We head along the Kiewa Valley Highway this morning and stop at the Tawonga Gap Lookout for some stunning High Country views of Mount Bogong, the highest peak in the Victorian Alps and Mount Beauty. Lunch today is in Eurobin where we enjoy a visit to the Red Stag Deer Farm. This commercial Deer Farm was established in 1987 and the 375 acre property borders the Mt. Buffalo National Park. After an early dinner and a chance to freshen up we drive to Beechworth for the signature Opera in the Alps performance beneath Baarmutha Park’s spectacular white-trunked eucalypts. This year’s diverse programme features Silvia Colloca (Mezzo Soprano), Thomas Strong (Tenor), Samuel Dundas (Baritone), William Barton (Didgeridoo); and conducted by Guy Noble. There will be performances from Opera Scholars Australia and Symphony Australia. At the conclusion of the evening we travel back to Wangaratta.

OVERNIGHT: Quality Hotel, WANGARATTA

DAY 4 Sunday 15th March, 2020

HOMEWARD BOUND THROUGH SILO COUNTRY

We have a leisurely start this morning before we farewell our hosts to begin our journey home. Silos are drawing crowds to small country towns in Victoria, so we’re off to do a little silo spotting of our own. Our first stop today is in Tungamah to see brolgas and a kookaburra. The St James silos features the story of GJ Coles (Coles Supermarkets). In Devenish, see Cam Scale’s artwork representing the changing role of women in the military – a First World War nurse and a modern-day combat medic. At the Goorambat Silo we see a Barking Owl, which is critically endangered. We’ll also make a stop here at the Uniting Church to view the stunning depiction of ‘Sophia’ the female aspect of the Holy Spirit. Each silo has a different artist and a different story! After lunch in Benalla we’ll take a drive to see some of the Street Art – artists from around the world were brought together to paint murals on bare walls, some over three stories high. We then head home with some fantastic memories of our Autumn tour.
