Scholarships for 4-H’ers!! Are you an Iowa 4-H'er planning to attend college? The Iowa 4-H Foundation knows it's not easy to fi-

nance a college education, and we know that many Iowa 4-H'ers can use help achieving their educa-

tional goals. Consider applying for an Iowa 4-H Scholarship, funded by donors through the Iowa 4-H

Foundation. Designed to encourage Iowa 4-H members to continue their education beyond high

school, our current scholarship program offers 90 scholarships worth more than $90,000. Scholarships

range in value from $500 to $10,000.

All applications are due February 1, 2017, 11:59 p.m. (Exception: Hills Bank Leadership Grant deadline extended - see below)

A list of scholarships and qualifications can be found at the application site:

https://www.iowa4hfoundation.org/index.cfm?nodeID=31466&audienceID=1

To be eligible for any of the Iowa 4-H Foundation Scholarships 2 letters of recommendation are re-

quired - one from an Extension staff member or 4-H volunteer and one from a school/college academic

advisor or teacher. College undergraduates may submit both letters from academic advisors. Hills

Bank Leadership Grant applicants will also need 2 letters of recommendation from either from a

community member, employer, or volunteer and from a school teacher or academic advisor. Within the

application is a section to send the requests for a letter to be submitted on your behalf. Please begin

your application in a timely fashion to give your recommenders time to submit their letter.

Grant money for clubs!!

APPLICATION Available for DuPont Pioneer Seed Grants for Community Improvement Projects

We are happy to report that the DuPont Pioneer Seed Grants are back for 2016-17. We are accepting grants now through Jan. 17, 2017. Applications should be turned into County Extension Offices by Jan. 17.

You can find information, application tips, application, and a promotion brochure for these grants on the Iowa 4-H website at: www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/pioneergrants. Grants can be awarded from $50 to $500 but typically will not exceed half of the cost of the total project as groups are encouraged to work at obtaining local support as a match.

Successful projects are those that enlist partnerships with other community entities, demonstrate en-gagement by the full 4-H club, and make a positive impact on the community. Send questions regard-ing the DuPont Pioneer Seed Grants to Brenda Allen at [email protected].

LET’S SHARE THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS! The Togetherhood Committee of the Montgomery County Family YMCA is

again sponsoring Adopt a Child for Christmas. We have many children in

our area that will not receive any special gifts this year for Christmas. The

need is there.... now we just need sponsors. This is an opportunity that we

have to show our children and other family members how to give to those

in need this Christmas. Each child’s gift should not exceed $40 (and can be

less). If you are interested in this program, please stop by the YMCA after

November 28 to pick up the information. Unwrapped gifts should be

brought to the Y by December 13. If you have any questions about this

program, please call Nick Zimmer at the YMCA (712-623-2161).

Additional 4-H Opportunities:

2017 Equine Extravaganza!

March 24-26, 2017, Ellsworth Equestrian Center, Iowa Falls

Friday, March 24 – Horse Quiz Bowl

Saturday, March 25 – Hippology, Horseless Horse events and Trail Clinic

Sunday, March 26 – Horse Judging and Model Horse

There are opportunities for both teams and individual competition and learning. Rules and more information can be found at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/equineextravaganza This will be updated by January 1, 2017.

Quiz bowl - The State 4-H Horse Bowl is a quiz contest made up of questions pertaining to horse topics. Pairs of four-person teams compete against each other responding to questions asked by a contest moderator. Each team is given credit for correct answers, and in some cases a penalty for incorrect answers. The team with the highest score at the end of the contest is declared the winner.

Hippology - Hippology is an activity that can enhance learning for 4-H members by letting them exhibit their knowledge and understanding of equine science and husbandry in a competitive setting. The term "Hippology" comes from the Greek "hippo", meaning horse, and "ology", meaning "the study of". Participants will be able to demonstrate their experience and knowledge gained in horse judging, quiz bowl, speeches, and practical horse management.

Phases of the contest include a written exam, identification of items shown on slides, placing and/or ID of feedstuffs or feed tags, judging, ID stations, and team problems.

Horse Judging - In Horse Judging, youth learn to evaluate a horse's form as it relates to function, and compare it to the ideal as well as to other horses. The added benefit is that it gives youth the opportunity to sharpen their decision making skills and their ability to defend those decisions.
