Beef Cattle Selection Workshop
For those of you who are planning on feeding a beef project, there will be a Beef Cattle Selection Workshop to be held on October 25, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Grimes County Fairgrounds. Speaker will encompass primary selection fundamentals as well as initial project management practices. Please RSVP by October 21, 2011 at 936-873-3907.
Recordbook Training is set for October 24, 2011 at the Grimes County Extension Office at 6:15 p.m. for the 2011-2012 year. This year marks the beginning of a makeover for 4-H Recordbook.
September 1st marks the beginning of the 2011-2012 4-H year. Our hope is
that all of you will stick to the Grimes County 4-H program in our efforts to make the best better. Our challenge to you as youth and adults in our county’s 4-H program is that we perform our 100% best and that we are supportive of one another.
Our promise to you is that we will give our best to you as we put together pro-grams, activities and events. Though this has always been a priority, it is even more critical now because of the 4-H participation fee. Please remember to re-enroll on 4-H Connect at texas.4honline.com
Attention Major Show Broiler Exhibitors

The Grimes County Rainbow Room is in need of boys clothing from birth to high school. Here is a little background on the Rainbow Room: the Rainbow Room accepts new items only, oper-ating on the credo that "abused and neglected children don't need abused and neglected clothes."
Current Needs Include:
Diapers
Formula
Baby receiving blankets
Shampoo
Toothbrushes
New shoes in all sizes
Toddler clothing
Birthday gifts for all ages
To make donations to the Rainbow Room, feel free to bring them to 208 South Judson Street in Navasota which is the same building that the Extension Office is in. As you are planning One Day in 4-H activities remember this program. Sometimes, the difference between a child who goes to school and one who doesn't is a pair of shoes, a winter coat, a notebook and pencil. Sometimes, the difference between an infant who is healthy and one who isn't is formula, clean diapers, lotions and powders -- things that many parents take for granted.
Clothing Project
If you plan on participating in the clothing project this year, plan on purchasing a package of pad-ded cloth diapers to make burp clothes for the Rainbow Room. Padded diapers will be used at the January 14 workshop. A sewing night will be offered this Fall to work on a special sewing project.
4-H Proclamation
The Grimes County 4-H Council officers will attend the Commissioners Court meeting on Sep-tember 27 to have October 2-8 proclaimed as National 4-H week in Grimes County. Each council officer will address the County Judge and Commissioners informing them of the value of our program. They will also provide everyone at court that day with sweet treats and take their council pictures.
Careers in Extension
We consider it an honor and a privilege to serve as your County Extension Agent. You are invited to visit our human resources page to check out careers by visiting greatjobs.tamu.edu and search the postings.
Bubba Can Cook Adult Volunteers
Adult volunteers are needed on September 16 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. and September 17 from 1:00-9:00 p.m. to work shifts at the Bubba Can Cook Cook-Off. Please contact Charlene Moriarty at (936) 825-4876.

Texas 4-H Theme Song Competition
Do we have an opportunity for an inspiring youth song writer and performer? Two years ago, former 4-H member, Brison Bursey wrote and performed the theme for the one day 4-H community service project. We are looking for the next Brison Bursey! Entries are now being accepted by any active Texas 4-H member for a theme song that highlights what Texas 4-H is all about. Visit http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/library/files/news_n4Hwk_song.pdf for guidelines.
National 4-H Week
National 4-H Week is October 2-8 this year. As 4-H individuals, families, and clubs; take time to pro-mote 4-H. Ideas: tag you vehicle (after gaining permission from your parents) with a 4-H message or wear 4-H clothing. Other ideas are available at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/news/national4Hweek ..
One Day in 4-H
The 3rd
annual One Day is set for October 8. One day 4-H is one day for all the 4-H members, parents, leaders, and volunteers to step out into their communities and county and say "thank you" by giving back for them more than 103 years of support to 4-H in Texas. Find more ideas at http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/oneday/index.php.

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning
leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H is about having fun, learning, ex-
ploring and discovering. In 4-H, young people make new friends, develop
new skills, become leaders and help shape their communities.

Treats on the Street in Navasota
Each club is asked to collect as many bags of candy as possible throughout the month of Octo-ber. The candy will be used to provide a safe trick or treating experience to youth. Each year over 1,000 youth attend this event.
2012 Graduating Seniors
Graduating Seniors September 15 is a date worth noting. It is the time to inform us of your intent to apply for the Grimes County 4-H scholarship. Simply email [email protected] and use as your subject scholarships and state that you intend to apply for the Grimes County 4-H scholar-ship. A complete list of guidelines will be provided to you in early October once revisions have been made to the applications.
Pecan Sales
As many of you know, pecan sales is our countywide 4-H fundraiser. This fundraiser helps signifi-cantly in financial support of our program. Pecan sales began on September 1, 2011 and will con-clude on September 30. Everyone is encouraged and needed to sell pecans. As noted in the 4-H Handbook, every club is required to participate in the county pecan sales and all clubs will sell the same brand of pecans at the same prices set by the Extension Office. If you have not picked up your pecan sheets, contact your club manager.
Congratulations to Peggy McKay and Sherry Marrs being certified in Food Protection Manage-ment. We are asking 4-H clubs who do concession stands or sell food to take a food safety or food handlers class.
