4-H GUIDELINES CLAY COUNTY, SD October 2020 A NOTE FROM LAUREN Although this spring and summer's 4H year has been challenging for us all, we are so proud of our 4Her's abilities to be resilient and flexible as we work through these times together. We are glad to have been able to provide some sense of "normal" activities this year by having a form of Achievement Days and State Fair. We appreciate all of our 4H families and volunteers who worked together to make these events possible! We conƟnue to follow guidelines laid out for us through the State 4HOce, SDSU Extension, and the Board of Regents. We are doing the best we can to keep everyone informed of changes as they become known to us. 4Her's are known for being creaƟve and adaptable keep nding creaƟve ways to meet with club members, do 4H projects, community service, and leadership acƟviƟes. We hope things will be returning to a beƩer sense of normalcy soon. 4HONLINE 4HOnline is geƫng an update! As the transiƟon to 4HOnline 2.0 takes place, 4HOnline will not be available unƟl November 2. Members, volunteers, and club leaders will not have access unƟl then. New enrollment and reenrollment will take place aŌer November 2. New help sheets will be available. NATIONAL 4-H WEEK IS OCTOBER 4 – 10: OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL Wednesday, Oct. 7 is National 4H Week Spirit Day. How will you celebrate and promote 4H? Here are some ideas: Wear green or the 4H clover. Have a 4H mask? Be sure to wear it! Decorate an Opportunity4All sign and share your pictures and captions of what opportunity means to you using the hashtag #Opportunity4All on social media. Use the National 4H Week Zoom backgrounds on all your virtual meetings. Share these ideas and encourage other 4H’ers to participate in spirit day. Show your 4H pride with a new yard sign available from the office for $10! 4-H RECOGNITION EVENT Our annual 4H RecogniƟon Event to recognize our 4H member’s accomplishments will be held Sunday, November 15 at 2 pm via Zoom. Link will be announced in the November newsleƩer. Club leaders will present the actual awards and your county fair premium money at your December club meeƟngs. AMERICA’S FARMERS GROW COMMUNITIES Bayer Fund’s America’s Farmers Grow Communi es program is now open for enrollment.  For more than ten years, they have been able to award more than 35 million dollars to thousands of rural nonprofits across the county – and it’s all thanks to farmer’s par cipa on in our program.  And now, more than ever, we need your help to con nue protec ng the programs and ins tu ons that keep farmers and their communi es thriving. Enroll now through Sunday, November 1 for the chance to direct a $2,500 dona on to a local nonprofit of your choice.  Learn more here.   

4-H EZ - VOLUNTEER TRAINING The North Central Region Volunteer Specialists are excited to share with you a new online training resource: “4‐H EZ: Recipe for Community Club Success”.  This training includes six videos, handouts, and resources that go with the videos. You can watch the videos and review the handouts and resources designed for your club use. Also included is a “4‐H EZ Applica on Guide” that al‐lows you to reflect on the videos and apply the informa on specifically to your 4‐H Club.  This online training can be completed by yourself or with a group of youth and adult volunteers. You can complete the videos all in one se ng or divide them up, as needed, for your schedule. The videos are available at: h p://bi t.ly/4‐HEZ.  Click on the heading of each sec on to go to the video. You’ll first be asked to sign in, then you can click on the video link. At the end of each video, you’ll be asked to reflect on something you have learned and offer sugges ons for future training opportuni es. We thank you for your interest in strengthening your 4‐H Club and hope that 4‐H EZ will help you with these efforts!    

PAPER CLOVER – TRACTOR SUPPLY COMPANY We are excited to announce that Tractor Supply Company has yet again partnered with 4‐H to offer the Paper Clover fundraiser. This fundraiser will occur in‐store and online October 7‐18, 2020. Ninety percent of all dollars raised will return to South Dakota in an effort to get youth to camps and leadership experiences. NEW: TSC will be matching dona ons for anyone making a dona on with their TSC Private Label Credit Card and awarding the top 10 states with the greatest increase of funds raised over last year ‐ a $2,500 bonus dona on.  This year, because of the COVID crisis, TSC is reques ng no physical presence from 4‐H programs at their stores including outdoor spaces like parking lots.   

CITIZENSHIP WASHINGTON FOCUS  The 2021 CWF conference will be held virtually for six weeks ‐ May 30 through July 10, 2021.  As soon as we have more infor‐ma on from the State 4‐H Office, senior 4‐H members will be no fied.

Congratulations to Eleanor Ander‐son for her Grand Champion Sin‐gle Comb Clean Legged Bantam and Reserve Champion Bantam at the State 4‐H Poultry Show in Huron on August 29. Eleanor is a member of the Clay County Flyers and daughter of Bill and Angela Anderson.

James Larsen, a member of the Pride of Wakonda 4‐H Club and son of Tom Larsen and Beth Zavala, had a great State Fair ex‐perience. His awards included Grand Champion Overall Dairy Goat; Third Place Overall Dairy Goat; Grand Champion Toggen‐burg; Grand Champion All Other Breeds; and Reserve Champion Beginner Dairy Goat Showman‐ship. Way to go, James!

Congratulations to Riley Skatvold on his Reserve Champion cross‐bred market steer at the State Fair 4‐H Beef Show. Riley is the son of Josh and Sarah Skatvold and a member of the Clay County Fly‐ers.
