As a way to reach and keep in touch with 4-H members, the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development program designed the Food, Fun, 4-H program. This hands-on acvi- ty was so popular, its back for another run this summer. The program also is operang in 55 classrooms across the state this school year. The next summer Food, Fun, 4-H is slated to begin in May and will run through August and will focus on internaonal cuisine. Cathy Allen, 4-H curriculum coordinator at the State 4-H Office at Oklahoma State University, said the inial goal was to engage 100 4-H members, but ended up with 727 families parcipang in the inaugural program. We were so excited to have so many families parcipate. During the me in which families were sheltering in place, our club members and other parcipants were engaged in fun, posive youth development,Allen said. Our program engaged youth in third grade through seniors with monthly packets containing themed recipes, educaon- al skills lessons, a family physical acvity, dinner conversaon starters, as well as fair entry ideas.In addion to promong kitchen and cooking skills, Food, Fun, 4-H also teaches youth how to be smart consumers through planning, me management and budgeng. Oklahoma 4-H families who register for the program will receive a kitchen utensil kit related to that months recipes, along with the recipes and other informaonal material. Youth must prepare at least two of the recipes in the packet and complete a post-lesson report. Parcipants also are asked to submit two photos – one of them preparing the dish and another of the family unit sharing the meal. This qualifies them to receive the next months utensil kit. Allen said there have been many requests from Extension educators in other states and the program is open to anyone to parcipate. Families who are not involved in 4-H are sll eligible to parcipate and receive the monthly recipes, educaonal materials and family acvies via email, but are not eligible for the kitchen utensil kit. One thing we learned through parcipantsfeedback was they shared more meals together as a family. Food, Fun, 4-H brought families together over the dinner ta- ble where they were more acvely involved in sharing conversaon,Allen said. This summers program will be a great way for parcipants to learn more about the world. The packets will contain informaon about a parcular region. Its a great way to connue the educaonal process over the summer. One family who parcipated in the inial Food, Fun, 4-H program, said they were thankful for having the opportunity to parcipate and loved seeing their children gain new culinary experience and skills. Programming in 4-H has focused on learning by doing for more than a century. Food, Fun, 4-H is just another way to honor the roots of the worlds largest youth development program,Allen said. Fun, Food, 4-H has been highlighted by the Naonal 4-H Council and is spon- sored by a Walmart Healthy Habits Grant. Food, Fun, 4-H set to kick off again in May

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit early last year, many people were confined to their homes. As a way to reach and keep in touch with 4-H members, the Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development program designed the Food, Fun, 4-H program. This hands-on activi-ty was so popular, it’s back for another run this summer. The program also is operating in 55 classrooms across the state this school year. Make plans to attend the next Countywide meeting for members, parents and volunteers, Monday, April 26, 2021

beginning at 6:00pm at the fairgrounds. We will discuss and plan upcoming events

and provide training as well. Contests will following this meeting.

Fashion Revue/Impressive Dress Contest

The Major County 4-H Fashion Re-vue/Impressive Dress Contest will be held Monday, April 26, beginning at 7:00 p.m., following the County-Wide 4-H meeting, at the Major County Fairgrounds. The Entry deadline is Monday, April

19th; Contest information is available at

the OSU Extension Center. We will do inter-

views with the Judges and then do the Style

Show with awards.

Job Readiness Contest Plans are underway for the Major County

Job Readiness Contest! This contest is for Intermediates (grades 6 to 8) and for Seniors (grades 9 to 12) and will be held in conjunction with the Fashion Revue/Impressive Dress Con-test on Monday, April 26th.

More details are available at the OSU Ex-tension Center with information on how folder items should be put together, check sheets, etc.

4-H FOOD SHOWDOWN

Do You Like To Cook?

Do You Like To Create Your Own Reci-

pes?

Do You Enjoy Watching Food Shows Or

Cooking Contests On TV?

If so, you might be interested in the 4

-H Food Showdown Contest.

Teams of 2 or 3 members have the

opportunity to prepare a dish to present to

a team of judges.

Junior teams (grades 3 to 5) are giv-

en a basic recipe to prepare. Grocery

items from a common pantry can be used

to enhance the recipe or be served with

the recipe item.

Intermediate teams (grades 6 to 8)

given a secret ingredient and category.

Groups make up their own recipe.

Senior teams (grades 9 to 12) are

given a box containing one or more secret

ingredients. The secret ingredients are

used along with grocery items from a com-

mon pantry to create a dish. We will hold our County Contest on

Tuesday, April 27 at 5:30pm. Please RSVP

by April 20th.

TRI-COUNTY 4-H CAMP

This year’s camp dates are set for June 16, 17, &

18. However, we aren't sure at this time if we will

be holding the event and if so, what format it will

be. Stay tuned for more information.

County Recordbook Workshops

We plan to have two county 4-H recordbook

workshops were you can bring your materials

and work on your books, ask questions, share

ideas on Monday, May 17 from 5:30—7:30pm

and Wednesday, June 9, from 10:00am to noon

in the exhibit building at the fairgrounds. Pizza

and drinks will be provided, so please RSVP to

our office by 5:00pm the day of, if you plan to

attend. County recordbooks are due July 1.

State 4-H Roundup 2021

Save the date, tell your friends and begin

making plans to attend the 100th State

4-H Roundup, July 28, 29, and 30,

2021, on the campus of Oklahoma State

University. Registration materials will be

released soon. This is for Members 7th

grade and up.

Tractor & Machinery Operators Certification Program

There will be a Tractor & Machin-ery Operators Certification program, in Cherokee on June 15 and 17, 2021. The program is designed to meet labor re-quirements for 14 and 15 year old youth who plan to work on a farm this sum-mer. The participants will learn:
