VAN BUREN COUNTY EXTENSION
Kaye
October was very busy, very productive and was a month of firsts!
The National 4-H week activities of assemblies and the parade were very
successful. I am already thinking of what can be done next year to celebrate!
Our first “carnival” for Halloween was a HUGE success. Yep, already plan-
ning the booths for 2012.
In the midst of all those activities, Awards Night planning was kicking into full
swing as well. We had over 70 record books turned in for awards, judging
has been completed, trophies completed and we are actually ready for
Awards night…..I think! I’m sure I am forgetting something…
I hope to see a large portion of you Saturday, November 5!
Happy Thanksgiving ALL!!!

dergarten to 12th grade. Members also got to enjoy some treats such
as edible eyeballs, mummy pizzas, potato ghosts
and earthworms in dirt. Each member received
a treat bag at check in to hold all their winnings of the evening. At the
end of the night, a costume contest was held with divisions of Clovers,

County Fair Updates
Herdsman Award
After working with the leaders and listening to the membership suggestions, we have come up
with some ideas of what was not working at the 2011 Fair. For Poultry, the show tables will be
set up under the trees with parental seating under the trees as well. For Rabbits, there will be
a pop up tent placed on the side of the building with show tables set up under the tent. Which
side of the building will be dependent upon the time of the show.
Times of the shows are yet to be determined, but we do know the Poultry & Rabbit show will
be split and placed on different days. Communications will also be placed on a different date
than exhibit judging. That date and time are also yet to be determined.
Attend Awards Night for an opportunity to vote on dates and times of the shows.

I am attempting to get funding to purchase enough harnesses for each member showing in
an animal show in the 2012 Van Buren County Fair. Each harness will have a number placed
on the inside of the harness. If we receive the funding, a member will check out a harness at
the beginning of fair week. The number of the harness will be recorded with the member’s
name. It is the member’s responsibility to keep track of that harness. At the end of the fair,
the harness is to be returned to the Extension staff. If a harness assigned to the member is
missing at the end of the fair, that member is responsible for paying the replacement cost of
the harness. In the event a harness is grabbed to be turned in because the harness assigned
can’t be found, the number on the harness will be credited to the member that checked it out
NOT the person that turned it in.

Rules Reminders
There will be a new rule in the book next year regarding large exhibits.
Per Extension Council, any large exhibits unable to fit in a car or suv and has been selected
for state fair will be the responsibility of the member to be transported to Des Moines. When
working on your projects for the fair, you will need to keep in mind if it is a large project what
course of action will need to be taken if you are selected for state fair. If you are unable to
transport your exhibit to the state fair upon selection, please notify the office immediately so
the alternate state fair selection may go in your place.

WHERE DID THEY GO???
We are still missing 3 Medium Harnesses.
The Numbers are 10M, 17M and 20M.
Please check your show boxes & trucks.
We need them back.
OUR VISION A WORLD IN WHICH YOUTH & ADULTS LEARN, GROW,
& WORK TOGETHER AS CATALYSTS FOR POSITIVE CHANGE
Now is the time to be thinking of next year’s exhibits for the fair. Anything you do in school
could possibly be used as an exhibit for the fair. If you do power point presentations for
school, they could possibly be entered as a computer exhibit OR in whatever class in which
the subject of the power point covered.
The possibilities are endless for what to do for projects. If you are struggling for ideas, call
me at the office. I will help you out as much as I can.
