Please remember to fill out the
BLUE enrollment forms. It is that time to
fill out new forms for the new program
year starting in September. If you don’t
fill this out you are not a registered 4-H
member and won’t have early camp sign-
up privileges.
VOLUNTEERS
If you have not filled out your
volunteer application, please check out the
website below. Background checks are
required on all of the volunteers that help
with the Spencer County 4-H Program.
This is now available to be printed out
from the website. Go to
www.spencerextension.com, click on the
4-H Volunteer link on the right hand side
of the screen and print off your application
today.

Please make sure that all forms are
completed and that we receive a copy of
your driver’s license when the form is
turned in. If all the forms are not
completed when they are turned it, it will
delay you getting approved as a volunteer.
You can also pick up a hard copy at
the Extension Office. If you are interested
in learning more about volunteering with
Spencer County 4-H, please talk to Mollie
or a club leader today!
FUNDRAISERS
Remember: The profit for each 4-
Her selling will be held by the 4-H
Council. Those dollars may be used by the
child for any 4-H Program event or fee.
Examples for use are: 4-H Camp,
Shooting Sports Camp, Teen Summit,
Teen Conference, fees due by individuals
competing in shooting sports, livestock
club, horse club, etc. To obtain the
dollars, when needed, the parent must
notify the Extension Office. If you have
any questions regarding the fundraiser
program for the kids or have any
fundraiser ideas, please call Mollie
Tichenor at 477-2217.
Spencer County 4-H Council still
has a few 4-H Family and Friends
Cookbook still available! The price is $15
for each book. Don’t forget that the profit
for each 4-Her selling will be held by the
4-H Council and is $10 per cookbook.

the Spencer County Extension Office.

ACHIEVEMENT
AWARDS Spencer County 4-H has a lot of
members that need to fill out the annual
achievement awards. Mollie emailed all
past recipients with their past applications
and to all those that have expressed
interest. If you are interested in learning
more about Achievement Awards, which
include Teen Conference for a reduced rate
or even free, college scholarships, and the
experience of National 4-H Congress,
please talk to Mollie today.

Awards start with those in 6th grade until
aging out of 4-H. Please let Mollie know

Cloverbuds, ages 5-8, will meet on

COUNTRY HAMS It is time to sign up for the 2017 4-H
Country Ham Project, we are also opening
it again to adults. Both forms are included
in this newsletter. The deadline to sign up
is December 6th. The forms are also
available at the Extension Office or contact
Connie Jeffiers for additional information
at 502-902-1421.
DISTRICT 3 TEEN
RETREAT The 2017 District 3 Teen Retreat
will be held on January 20-21 in Northern
Kentucky. Forms are now available, see
Mollie. This event is open to high school
age members and is an opportunity to
network with teens from across District 3.
There is a hope to start at District 3 Teen
Council and the discussion will occur at
this event to iron out those details. The
cost is $70 and the deadline to turn in
registration papers and money is
December 9th. Please keep in mind that
there will be additional hotel cost.
TEEN SUMMIT Teen Summit is a middle school
leadership conference for those in 6th
through 8th grade. Spencer County will be
attending teen summit this spring, a date
will be released later this year. Please let
Mollie know if you are interested. This is
a great leadership conference for Middle
School age youth at the 4-H Leadership
Center in Jabez!
TEEN CONFERENCE The 2017 Kentucky 4-H Teen
Conference will be held on the University
of Kentucky Campus June 12-15, this is a
tentative date. This is a leadership
conference for those completing the 8th
grade through high school. Please let
Mollie know if you are interested.
4-H BANQUET
Thank you to everyone that attended
the annual 4-H Awards and Recognition
Banquet on October 27th at the Spencer
County Extension Office. It was a great
night and we truly recognized some
outstanding 4-Her’s and community
leaders! It was the largest 4-H Banquet in
a number of years!
Members were recognized for
communication participation, county fair
and state fair participation, tractor driving,
and clubs were all recognized for their
accomplishments as a club as well as
individual members. Our Cloverbud
members introduced themselves and truly
shined. 2016 Graduating Seniors were
recognized. Thank you to the Teen and
Adult Volunteers that dedicate their time
to 4-H campers from Spencer County.
Spencer County 4-H would not be the
program that it is without the dedication
from our volunteers, especially the 4-H
Council officers and members as well as
the 4-H Club Leaders. Special thanks to
Tim Brewer, Bill Dunning, Kim Hanik,
Connie Jeffiers, and Stacy LaRue for all
that you do!
The achievement award winners
were recognized. Sean Ladwig was a
winner of the Clover Level 1, which is
great! Lilli Hanik continues to reach her
goals in 4-H. She was a gold award
winner for 2016 and an Emerald finalist.
She will be representing Kentucky at the
National 4-H Congress this month.

By taking part in the country ham project, I am responsible for the following:

Follow instructions of Extension Staff(deviation of procedure can cause spoilage and damage to hams)
Pay $40.00 fee – you will receive 1 ham or Pay $80.00 fee – you will receive 2 hams (Failure to complete the work on the hams may result in forfeiture of ham(s) and the $40/$80 fee)
Hams will be provided for the project. Outside meat may not be placed in the 4-H Ham House.
The Ham Project will coincide with the 4-H Country Ham Project. 4-H members will be working on their projects at the same meetings. 4-H hams will be exhibited at the Kentucky State Fair 4-H Ham Contest. Adults may enter the open division for Country Ham. Entry in the State Fair is your responsibility. Must complete 6 hours of training under the supervision of a certified livestock volunteer.
Giving a 3-5 minute presentation at Ky. State Fair in August. On the required topic: Junior (Born 2007 - 2003) History of the country ham. -The Country Ham is a signature food of the Southeastern United States. Discuss the history of the dry
cured ham from its beginnings in Europe to the United States. Senior (Born 1998 - 2002) How to market and sell Country Hams. -If you were a professional country ham producer, how would you market and sell you product to the
consuming public. Your speech should include your target audience and unique ways to advertise
country hams.
Please note – ALL SENIORS PRESENTATIONS MUST BE AT LEAST 2 MINUTES LONG OR THEY WILL BE DIS-QUALIFIED AND HAMS FORFIETED.
Pay $60.00 fee – you will receive 2 hams (failure to complete the project, fee will NOT be refunded and you will forfeit both hams, Upon forfeit, if the two hams are not returned an additional $60.00 fee will be charged and if the additional fee is not paid the 4-H member will not be able to participate in next years’ country ham project).
All winning hams will be placed on display at the Kentucky State Fair and will be returned at its conclusion.
