Toallofourreaders,volunteersandsupporters:Wewouldliketosayagreatbigthankyou!Thankyouforyourcontinuedgenerosityinhelping4LuvofDogRescuecontinueitsmissiontosavethelivesofdogsandfindthembet-terhomes.Yourtime,donationsandfostercarearethecornerstoneofthisorganization,andwithoutyou—thedonor—itwouldnotbepossible.Yourdonationsareimportantandneeded.Eventhesmallestfundraisingeventmakesanoticeabledifferencetoadoginneed.Caseinpoint:Lastyear’s“Christmaswishlist”received65giftsfordogsthatspenttheirChristmasinafosterhome,board-ingfacilityorattheNorthDakotaStateUniversityfacility.It’sallaboutthelittlethings.
Thatsaid,let’stakealookatsomeofthepastfundraisingeventswe’veheldandhowyouallhelpedkeepthecausealiveandrunning.
OneoftheregularfundraisingeventsheldistheWestFargoParksRummageSalethattakesplaceinthespringandsummer.Thiseventisoneofthebasefundraisersthathelpskeepday-to-dayfunctionsat
4LuvofDogRescuepossible,andwehaveyou,thedonors,tothankforit.April’seventearnedcloseto$900;September’s$1,300.
Asyoucansee,youreffortsanddonationsarenotlost.4LuvofDogRescueprovidesandpaysforallnecessities(food,kennel,medi-calcare,etc.)butcannotdothiswithoutyoursupport.Again,thankyou.
It’sthattimeofyearagain,andthe4thAnnualSilentAuction&Galaispreparedtoovershadowthepre-viousyear’ssuccessstories.2009’sevent,ourfirstlargefundraiser,exceededeveryone’sexpectations.Withapproximately350peopleinattendanceand240bidders,itset
thestagefor4LuvofDogRescuetobecomeatrulyindependentcharitableorganization.Theeventdrewin$13,141!Agreatstarttosaytheleast.
2010wasanevengreatersuccessasapproximately475peopleat-tendedattheHiltonGardenInninFargo.Thisfundraiserdrew340biddersandasaresultyouallsup-ported4LuvofDogRescuetothetuneofanastounding$20,322!Asmashingsuccessandoneinwhichwecanagainsaywholeheartedly,thankyou.
The3rdAnnualSilentAuction&Galareallymadethestatementthatthiswastheyeartoofficiallymaketheeventannual.Theadmirableeffortsbyallthevolunteers,donorsandattendeesmadethisparticulareventatremendousstepforwardfor4LuvofDogRescueingen-eral.Attendancewasspectacularwithapproximately635-pluspeoplegatheringtosupportthecausewith455biddersbringinginanamazing$28,000!Attheriskofsoundingredundant,butinlieuofthosenumbers,wecanonlysay,thankyousoverymuch! AMumtaughtmehowtowalkonatreadmilltogetaddi-
tionalexercise.EventhoughI’mkindofscaredofmachines(likeourvacuumandhairdryer!),thewayshetaughtmehelpedmenotbesoafraidofthetreadmill.NowI’ma“treadmillwalkingmachine”andIloveit!Walkingonatread-millisgreatexerciseforuspups,likeinthedeadofwinterwhenit’stoocoldforawalk,orduringtheextremeheatofsummer.It’snosubstituteforanicelongwalkorrunbutcomesinreallyhandywhenIneedmyexerciseandcan’tgetoutside.Youcantrainyourpuptowalkonatreadmill,justlikeIdo.BeforeMumtaughtmetowalkonourtreadmill,shegotafewtipsfromfriendsandfromvariousweb-
sites.Hereiswhatshelearnedandutilizedtohelpmelearn:•Don’tfeedyourdogonehourbeforeorafterrigorousexercise.•Placethetreadmillsothedogisn’twalkingintoawall(veryimportant!).•Useclickertrainingifyourpupisclickertrained.•Startbyhavingthedoggetuponthetreadmill(withoutrunning)togetusedtobeingonthemachine,andclickandtreat!•Dothisforhoweverlongittakesforyourdogtobeveryinterestedinbeingonthetreadmill.•Then,haveyourdogstandorsitnearthetreadmillandturniton.•Haveyourdoggetusedtothesoundafewfeetawayfromthetreadmill,clickandtreat,andcon-tinueuntilthedogiscomfortable.•Putyourdogonaleash.•Ifyourdogislightenoughtopickup,startthetreadmillataveryslowspeedandplaceyourpupontothetreadmillusingatreatasalure.Ifit’sabigdog,havehimstandonthetreadmillasyouturnitonatavery,veryslowspeed,alsousingatreatasaluretohavehimwalkfor-ward.Thenpraise,praise,praise!•Yourdogmaybeabitfright-enedatfirst,butstaycalmandsayencouragingwords.(Ilaydownthefirsttimethebeltmovedandflewrightoffthebackofthetreadmill.Momlaughed...guessIcan’tblamehernow)•Keeptryingthesestepsuntilyourpupiscomfortablewalkingonthetreadmill.•Standnexttoyourdog,holdinghis/herleashtautinanuprightpo-sitionastheywalkonthetreadmill,
simulatingawalkalongsideyou.•Ifyourdogisstilluncomfortable,youmaywanttostandinfrontofthetreadmill,holdinghisleashforhimtobeinthecorrectposition,anduseatreatasaluretowalktowardyou.Prettysoon,yourpupwillbeanaturalatwalkingonthetreadmill.Alwayssuperviseyourdog,andusealeashorharnesstokeephimcenteredonthetreadforsafety.Mumhasmewalkatapaceofagoodtrotlikeyouwouldonabriskwalkoutside.Haveyourdogwalkonthetreadmillfrominintervalsof5toamaximumof10minutestobegin,andincreasethetimeveryslowly,alwayswatchingthemforanydiscomfort.Hereareafewmoretips:•Keepthetreadmillcleanfromdoghairanddrool.It’snotgoodforthemachine.•Makesureyourdog’snailsareclippedproperlyfortheirsafety.•Havefun!
