The epidermisAs the external or outer surface of skin, the epidermisacts as a protective shield against bacterial infection,daily exposure to insult and injury, and chemical expo-

sure. Composed of multiple layers of skin cells, it con-tains millions of tiny pores, glands, and ducts — about6,000 per square inch.

Plump, moisture-rich cells are constantly beingformed at the base of the epidermis and pushedupward by newer cells. As cells rise toward the sur-face, each flattens out and hardens, eventually becom-ing part of the dead protective surface layer called thestratum corneum or horny layer. Lifeless cells are con-tinually shed from the surface — a natural processcalled exfoliation. As cells flake away or are rubbed off,they’re replaced by cells from below.

The dermisThe next layer down, called the dermis, supports andnourishes the epidermis. The dermis is the “home” ofthe protein called collagen and fibers called elastin. Thedermis literally ”props up” the epidermis with an intri-cate network of collagen and elastin ”pillows”. Thesetiny pillows give support and elasticity to skin and pro-tect blood vessels, nerve cells, sweat glands, and hairfollicles. It could be said that elastin supplies the “snap”and collagen supplies the structure.

Natural oil: SebumThe dermis contains sebaceous glands which manufac-ture a lipid substance called sebum. Secreted to theskin’s surface through ducts located at every hair shaft,sebum reaches the outermost epidermal layer and sur-rounds each cell. Sebum is essential for optimum skinhealth and youthful appearance because it helps skinmaintain a smooth texture and helps reduce the risk ofdehydration damage and premature wrinkling.

In dry skin, sebum production is below normal.Inefficient sebum production reduces the natural oilbarrier. When that barrier is diminished, moisture con-stantly evaporates from the skin, leaving it dry. In oilyskin, sebum production is above normal. Excess sebumproduces an oily film over the surface of the skin thatkeeps skin from getting the oxygen it needs. This barri-er can lead to obstructions and problem areas.

Several factors can adversely impact sebum produc-tion, including age, diet, over-cleansing with harshsoaps or alkaline cleansers, prescription drugs, alcohol,the environment, and overall health. Because one ormore of these factors are likely to be part of your life,it’s important to do everything you can to support yourskin’s natural sebum production, while helping to nor-malize it. Natural moisture: Perspiration Moisture is critical to healthy skin, keeping surfacecells plump, full and firm, while helping skin retaininternal moisture. Moisture also carries nutrients intothe layers of skin. Moisture can come from severalplaces, including humid environments, like steamrooms and humid weather and directly from water.Fashion models learned ages ago that their skin lookshealthier and smoother when they drink generousamounts of water. This makes sense when you considerthat skin is about 20% water.

A great deal of moisture evaporates through yourskin, especially in hot, arid temperatures and in cen-trally-heated or air-conditioned environments. Skin’snatural moisture is also absorbed by clothing. Whendeprived of moisture, skin becomes dry. Like parchedground during a drought, dehydrated skin can crackand completely change in texture. Skin loses its flexi-bility, resiliency and elasticity, and is subject to finelines and wrinkles. What’s more, repetitive movementsfrom frequent facial expressions stretch and stress dryskin. They begin to leave lasting creases as surfaceelasticity breaks down.

Contrast that with plump, moist skin that is able toremain resilient and responsive. Moist skin can withstandrepeated movements and stress because it remains muchmore flexible, resilient and elastic.

The moisture barrier: A healthy balanceWhen the secretions of both the sebaceous and sweatglands are in proper balance, oil and moisture blendtogether on the skin’s surface to create the ideal oil/moisture balance. That balance promotes healthy, moistand young-acting skin and protects against dehydration.

Maintaining an ideal water-and-oil balance can be achallenge, since so many factors can affect moistureand sebum levels. Consider the astringent nature ofsome soaps, cleansers and toners, the way they canstrip away vital moisture. Exfoliation and the skin life cycle Throughout your life, your skin is involved in a contin-uous growth cycle. The surface layer is constantly shedor exfoliated, which is a process of healthy skin function.

In your 40s, your skin renewal time may have near-ly doubled compared to your peak at age 20. And youcan expect a skin renewal time of longer than a monthwhen you reach your 50s. A longer renewal time meanstwo things: 1) old skin cells remain on the surfacelonger, looking dry and masking natural skin color andradiance, and 2) of greater importance, the slowerrenewal time indicates skin is not functioning at itsbest.

MANY TYPES OF HEALTHY SKINMost people don’t know how healthy and attractivetheir skin can be! Normal, healthy skin is neither toodry nor too oily; it’s naturally soft and elastic, and isable to protect itself against the environment.

Your genetic inheritance lays the groundwork foryour skin’s predisposition toward dryness or oiliness.But beyond that, your skin’s normal, healthy moisture-and-oil balance is the result of proper diet, adequaterest, drinking plenty of water, protection against theenvironment and proper skin care. Although there arefour basic skin ”types”, dry, normal, combination andoily, the following are the two ends of the spectrum:

DryDry skin occurs when skin doesn’t produce or retainenough natural moisture. Excessive dryness can becaused by changes in diet, and exposure to sun, windand/or cold temperatures. The longer one’s skinremains ”thirsty”, the sooner it begins to loose itsyouthful elasticity and resiliency, resulting in lines andwrinkles. Some skin care products may also contributeto drying effects over the long term, by using occlusive(pore-clogging) ingredients that can interfere withskin’s natural respiration and inhibit it’s ability tosecrete natural moisture.



OilyOily skin occurs when skin produces too much sebum.This excess oil production can, in part, be a response toenvironmental stress, exposure to sun and wind, orhormonal or dietary imbalances. However, oily skinmay also occur as an overreaction to harshly dryingskin care products that can over-stimulate the skin’snatural sebum production and possibly even erode thehealthy oil/moisture barrier.

FACTORS THAT AFFECT SKINSeveral factors, including age, environment, and UVradiation can affect your skin. Since people respond invarious ways to these factors, and everyone has differ-ent skin types and characteristics, the condition of yourskin is uniquely different from others.

Because skin changes as the years go by, your skincare program needs to change along with it. The skincare routine you followed in your 20s may actually domore harm than good! Hot and dry – Skin perspires in hot and dryenvironments.
