2. Joyful Spring has arrived,The birds welcome it with their happy songs,And the brooks in the gentle breezesFlow with a sweet murmur. 3. The sky is covered with a black mantle,Thunder and lightning announce a storm. When they are silent, the birdsTake up again their harmonious songs. 4. And in the ower-rich meadow,To the gentle murmur of leaves and plantsThe goatherd sleeps, his faithful dog at his side. 5. To the merry sounds of a rustic bagpipeNymphs and shepherds dance in their beloved spotWhen Spring appears in its brilliance. 6. Under the merciless sunLanguishes man and ock; the pine tree burns,The cuckoo begins to sing and at once Join in the turtle doves and the goldnch. 7. A gentle breeze blows, but BoreasJoins battle suddenly with his neighbour,And the shepherd weeps because overheadHangs the dreaded storm, and his destiny. 8. His tired limbs are robbed of their restBy his fear of the lightning and the heavy thunderAnd by the furious swarm of ies and hornets. 9. Alas, his fears are well foundedThere is thunder and lightning in the skyAnd the hail cuts down the lofty ears of corn. 10. The peasant celebrates with song and danceThe pleasure of the rich harvest,And full of the liquor of BacchusThey nish their merrymaking with a sleep. 11. All are made to leave off singing and dancingBy the air which now mild gives pleasureAnd by the season which invited manyTo enjoy a sweet sleep. 12. At dawn the hunters With horns and guns and dogs leave their homes; The beast ees; they follow its traces. 13. Already terried and tired by the great noiseOf the guns and the dogs, and wounded it triesFeebly to escape, but exhausted dies. 14. Frozen and shivering in the icy snow.In the strong blasts of a terrible windTo run stamping ones feet at every stepWith ones teeth chattering through the cold. 15. To spend the quiet and happy days by the reWhilst outside the rain soaks everyone. To walk on the ice with slow stepsAnd go carefully for fear of falling. 16. To go in haste, slide and fall down: To go again on the ice and run,Until the ice cracks and open. 17. To hear leaving theirIron-gated house Sirocco,Boreas and all the winds in battle:This is winter, but it brings joy.
