together with family – which includes their three chil-dren, grandchildren and great grandchildren – and friends on Saturday night. Kath and Claude have always lived in Nelson or Motueka, with a stint on a farm near Up-per Moutere. The only time they have been separated was for three years when Claude went to war when he turned 21. The separation never did them any harm though says Claude, who was based out of Maadi Base in Cairo on the banks of the River Nile during the Sec-

ond World War. They wrote letters backwards and forwards weekly, resulting in an inevita-ble engagement ring being sent in the post. "They do say that absence makes the heart grow fonder – and I can't get rid of her now" he says. While most spouses could probably list off a dozen an-noying habits that their other half just can't seem to shake, this isn't the case for these two who are "the best of friends" and still get along famously. "We are so used to each other that we don't notice. And if we haven't gotten used to each other by now then we never will," says Claude.

TOGETHER FOREVER: Kath and Claude Teece on their wedding day at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Nelson in 1943. Their anniversary is today.

Do you think Tasman District Council should be spending $240,000 on recreational events?

Michael Steele,Richmond.

“In some ways yes. There’s nothing to do in Nelson and it attracts more people to the

region.”

Trish Kemp, St Arnaud.

“Maybe not the full amount. If people want to put those

events on then maybe council can contribute.”

Phillip Robertson,Wakefield.

“I think they should play a part. If there’s things to enter-tain the young ones then it’s

good for them. A kid in sport stays out of court.”

Bob Reynolds,Richmond.

“I do. If it’s a positive place then that’s the important

thing.”

attracted hundreds more spectators. It hosts eight events in towns and vil-lages throughout the Tasman District each January. Other events include Sundial Jam, Tasman’s Got Talent and the Tasman Band Tour. Despite his support, Richard says the council has already moved to make some cutbacks. “We have already cut back this year in this area. A lot of these events and activities give a lot to the community and we start to cut to the heart of the community [if we stop funding these events].”Richard says all of the financial pres-sure comes from infrastructure. “It’s roads, storm water and water supply and waste water.”

A new principal with new ideasPeter Verstappen isn’t afraid to stamp his own mark on Wakefield School. The new principal has already confirmed he’s go-ing ahead with a new dual classroom which will see 50 students taught by two teachers next year. The idea, which was be-ing used at his previous school in Southbridge, came about when the school revisited plans to upgrade an old class-room block at the cor-ner of the school. In between the two class-rooms which angle into each other, are a toilet block and a cloak bay. The remodelling will see the two classrooms joined by a shared learning space in the middle. It is intended that students will have two teachers and can be situated in either the left or right classroom and will be able to use the shared space in the middle. “The potential for this to change the way we do teaching and learning is enormous. I think the old way of one teacher taking 20 or 30 kids has had its day and it’s time to go beyond that,” says Peter, who is yet decide on which age group will use the shared classroom. “I think it would benefit any age group and I started assuming it would be for Year 5 or 6 students.”As a self managing school, Wakefield School has

the freedom to make any changes it desires, but Peter admits he probably wouldn’t last very long in the job if he stormed in demanding it to be run a certain way, so instead he’s coming up with ideas and seeking feedback from the commu-

nity involved around the school. “It’s about building the conversa-tion. You have to bring the staff and the Board of Trustees with you. But what I’m finding is this is a place where I’m encouraged to throw out ideas because peo-ple are responsive.”Another idea he threw out for parental re-sponse in the school’s latest newsletter was how people would feel if their child had the same teacher for two years. While this ques-tion was merely that, Peter was encouraged by the feedback and

says it’s pleasing to have dialogue with parents. “It shows they have a lot invested in this place and they see it as part of the reason they’ve cho-sen to live in Wakefield.”Having spent his entire life living in village towns with strong community support, Peter has moved seamlessly into Wakefield and says he is enjoying his first year at the school. “I’m en-joying the culture and that comes from a school that is right at the centre of its community.”

Local couple buy into WeeklyRedwood Valley couple Craig and Sue Davies are now co-owners of Waimea Weekly. The Davies join Richmond’s Steve Page and Jenny Bates as owners of the Week-ly, maintaining its 100 per cent locally owned status. Sue has worked at the Weekly for five years before a six month break earlier this year but is back after

buying into the business.Craig is a professional fireman, based at the Nelson Fire Station and they have three children, the youngest at Waimea College.Sue says it was an exciting opportunity to be involved in a well-known and success-ful local business.“I’ve worked for the Weekly for years and

am very passionate about it. I love work-ing with local business owners and com-munity groups and I’m really excited to be back.”She says the opportunity to buy part of the business was too great for her and Craig. “It was a really great opportunity and we look forward to helping Waimea Weekly grow even further.”Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says it’s great to have Sue back on board to help the business continue its growth.“I call Sue my old fisherman’s wife, she’s great value and is a real asset to the busi-ness, as is Craig who’s already been doing plenty behind the scenes.”Waimea Weekly was founded in 2005 and is the region’s only locally owned and operated newspaper – the region’s other newspapers, Nelson Mail and Leader, are owned by Australian publisher Fairfax.Waimea Weekly also has a sister paper based in Nelson, called Nelson Weekly, which celebrated its third birthday this week. Steve says it’s an exciting time to be in the industry. “We are getting great feedback from advertisers and readers and are taking on more and more staff so we are really looking forward to the future.”

RECORD FUNDING FOR CAWTHRON: Nelson’s Cawthron Institute has received a record research grant from the govern-ment of $45.4 million, it announced last week. The new funding round includes significant investment in Cawthron’s shellfish and coastal marine research that is supporting sustainable development of primary industries. The grant was an-nounced by minister of science and inno-vation Steven Joyce.

POND CLEAN UP COULD COST $1M: A shock dose of a chemical used to kill weeds and algae in ponds is a last ditch attempt to clean up the Modeller’s Pond in Tahunanui before a $1million upgrade begins next year. The pond has suffered from algae for years and the council has tried many times to fix it by using vari-ous products and even draining the pond completely in the hope the algae would be gone when it was refilled. Nelson City Council currently has $495,000 in its budget to fix the pond but it is hoping a shock dose of the chemical Aquathol K, followed by monthly doses with Aqua Boost, an organic product commonly used in swimming pools, will fix the problem.027 UR VOICE

We’ll pay for frequency, says hunterA Richmond man is urging Radio Spectrum to allow hunters to use its frequency at a cost, a scenario he says would stop them from being prosecuted if they use illegal dog tracking col-lars.Last week Waimea Weekly reported that three search warrants had been issued to three sep-arate homes to seize dog tracking collars, a product made by Garmin. The collars, which have an in-depth GPS, al-lows hunters to indentify exactly where them-selves and their dogs are. But because they run on the same radio frequency paid for by forestry companies who need it for emergency calls, it has always been illegal for hunters to access it.While two hunters have told Waimea Weekly that they would continue to use them even though they are illegal, a third says he would stop, but hoped Radio Spectrum and the Ministry of Business In-novation and Employment could offer a realistic and legal alterna-tive – his pref-erence allowing hunters to pay $100 a year to use the service. “They need to come up with some information about relieving the prob-lem,” the anonymous man says. “I know a few guys have ended up in court over it but I know there a lot of guys out there who would pay so it’s user-friendly with both parties. Rather than banning it, why don’t they work with us?”MBIE believes that it is unnecessary for hunt-ers to use these illegal devices as there are alter-native dog tracking devices available with sim-ilar functions that are safe and legal, and says it will continue to take action to enforce the legal requirements. However, MBIE did say it would not do checkpoints in the forest as they were too labour intensive. But the alternative is a “bleep, bleep” product that appears to be very out-dated and in the past was more costly. Instead of having a visual GPS showing where the dogs are, it sends out different toned beeps so the hunter can hear whether the dogs have gone left or right. Waimea Weekly made contact with local for-estry companies on Monday to get their opin-ion on hunters using illegal devices on the land they manage, but not a single person spoken to was aware of the risks involved.

Catherine Kent celebrated her 40th birth-day last year in perfect health. She doesn’t smoke, eats healthy food, rarely drinks al-cohol and was in training for a marathon. The mother of one was also an art tutor and studying for an arts diploma.Life was “perfect”. Until she had a stroke which left her unable to make a cup of tea, dress herself or even talk. But almost a year on Catherine is back running, talking and this month will even graduate with her arts diploma. It’s been an incredible recovery that she says started with her husband’s quick thinking and a fridge magnet. Catherine and her daughter last year took part in the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day fun run. There they were given a fridge magnet from the Heart Foundation that had the signs of a stroke on it and for four months

Catherine’s husband David had read it eve-ry time he opened the fridge.Catherine said her stroke happened while she was out on a run, which was a lot hard-er than normal. She came home and start-ed working on her assignment for course and the words she’d written days earlier no longer made sense, she had a sore neck but still didn’t realise what was happening. The pain then spread to her jaw and when David made her lunch after returning home from a bike ride he knew straight away something wasn’t right. “I said ‘oh, I’m fine’. But he wasn’t having any of it and took me to a doctor straight away and they sent me to A&E. Even as the doctors were talking to me about it I still didn’t believe it was a stroke.”She says David’s quick thinking saved her as the longer a stroke goes untreated the

more damage to the brain. “I thought ‘I’m young, fit, healthy, this can’t be happen-ing to me. But it can happen to anyone, no matter the age, health or otherwise.”Catherine had to face the reality of a long recovery but after eight weeks tried to re-turn to work. “I just couldn’t do it and it was then that I realised I needed to take more time out.”Catherine’s mother came over from the UK to help teach her how to dress and eat all over again but she was determined not to give up her studies. “Everyone told me to stop it or to put it on hold but I really wanted to carry on so I did.”With only one semester finished when the stroke happened she had to battle through her second and final semester to gradu-ate. She says it was extremely tough work but she believes it’s helped her recovery.

“I found creating really therapeutic and it was the only time I didn’t hurt and my brain wasn’t sore.”She had to learn how to draw again but says that helped her coordination in her hands. “The hardest part was definitely writing, explaining my work.”This month Catherine and another student from Nelson doing the same extramural course will jointly exhibit their work at the Icon Gallery in Upper Moutere. The exhi-bition is the final part of her course and once finished she will graduate. Something she says she is extremely proud of. Catherine says she now wants to set up an art class for others with brain injuries as she believes it’s a great way to regain some skills and help with recovery. She is also back running three times a week and enjoying swimming when she can.

Locks lost on Daffodil DayTwo police officers, a real estate agent and the owner of a catering company all underwent a head shave on Daffodil Day, raising more than $2500 for the Nelson Cancer Society.Jane Gibson of Haven Realty, police officers Nick Kempthorne and Steve Berkett, and Lincoln Womers-ley of Blinc Catering put their hands up for the shave, which was held in Sundial Square on Friday in front of a small audience, with many taking photos of the par-ticipants.Jane, whose father died of cancer, says it was a very per-sonal experience to take part in. “One in three are af-fected so you can’t say no,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to do it and this was the year.”Last year five retailers took part in the shave.

Wednesday August 21The cat which had to have its leg amputated after it was caught in an illegal gin trap is well on the road to recovery. The cat, whose original name was Ollie but has been nicknamed ‘Jim’ by SPCA staff, has taken great steps towards build-ing up the muscle tone in his three remaining legs. He has already had plenty of offers of new homes, including one local lady who already has a three legged cat, who is keen to open her home to the animal. The original owner has also paid a significant amount of the vet bill, which was subsidised by the Halifax Vet Clinic. Wednesday August 28The Waimea Weekly inbox has been inundated with almost 100 emails from people wanting to be in to win a pack of local award winning home brewer Dale Holland’s beer. The lucky winners of the packs, which include a beer glass and four bottles of beer, are Brent Palmer and Janine Vincent. Congratulations. Wednesday February 13After some generous donations at the Nelson Lakes Festival and fundraising efforts from Destination Nelson Lakes, the group were able to present the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Hel-icoptor, St Johns and the Lake Rotoiti Fire Ser-vice with a $1965 cheque last Wednesday.

Power bills catch out more people:This is disgusting, I myself live in a three bedroom house with my

three year old son, we use a fire as heat-ing and a panel heater in my son’s room, been in here a year and this winters pow-er bills have been very high. I just don’t understand it. Alisha (via website).

Question for Mr Miccio, Some of us with Contact Energy receive

our bills online and pay via internet, plus pay on time to receive a 22% discount. If we sign up to the Kiwi Energy Trust, will we get estimated 20 per cent reduced rate plus our other discounts? Will our bills be administered by Kiwi Energy Trust? Also we receive discounts from the Net-work Tasman trust, will those still be available? Bridget Hobden (via website).

Discounts with whomever the succesful tenderer will be will be in addition to any existing discounts. Bills will be adminis-tered by your power company not Kiwi Energy Trust. Please visit our web site www.kiwienergy.co.nz for more details and to sign up with no obligations.Aldo Miccio.

Our bills have been around $400 per month in the winter. We have

a heat pump in an older style house and it doesn’t reach the end bedroom for our daughter and we can’t afford a HRV, we

missed out on the council fire scheme so we are stuck paying huge bills and we work from home, it just kills us in winter, we simply work to put food on the table and pay the power company in those cold months. Jaynie Holmes.

My daughter’s was $570 and try-ing to keep a home warm for an

asthmatic two year old and a prem baby on the one income. Maxine Abbott.

Heat pumps and other heaters are terrible. She may qualify for

the Tasman Trust rebate. They put some money onto my power bill this month. Came in handy as we had just moved and had the cost of moving our power to pay. I think more help should be given to the elderly for power costs but having said that if they have the heaters on all day and night no wonder their bills are high. Julia Lines.

Our power has gone up and as we have gas for hot water and cook-

ing and heating there is no actual reason for it to go up in winter but it had in-creased by over $100, makes you wonder if we get charged more in winter. Sarah Mitchell.

Waimea Villagers keep up fight:I want to thank the Weekly for keeping up its coverage on

Waimea Village. My neighbour’s mother is in there and it’s a horrible situation they face. I hope justice is done and these people can get back to enjoying their re-tirement. (Via text).

Snapper quote too generous:I think it should be 6 and I love getting out fishing. I think 10 per

person is a bit much. Aleisha Brunell.

When has one person ever need-ed more than 2-3 snapper? Don’t

be greedy leave some in the sea for other people. Mumof6 (via website).

Well when you come from a fam-ily of six, your dad spends about

100 bucks on bait and petrol...yeah that’s when you hope he comes home with his quota. Remember, there are seven days in a week, so having fresh fish for din-ner twice in two weeks is a good source of omega 3 for the whole family... Healthysnappa (via website).

Raid for dog trackers:Totally agree with this hunter, best thing that has happened to

pig hunting. Not only helps with lost dogs but helps get to the pig faster and hope-fully that means less, or cheaper vet bills. Why can’t there be a frequency hunters can obtain and make these devices legal? Geraldine (via website).

Walking a mile in someone elses shoes has taken on a new meaning for a local charity, that is of-fering community members a chance to help lo-cal students in need. Walk with Us is a new local Charitable Trust whose mission is to provide free school and sports footwear and socks to children who de-spite needing them the most, sometimes miss out. Eight local schools have already signed up to join the early pilot programme including Vic-tory, Richmond and Wakefield primary schools, who will provide feedback on the programme.Walk with Us has been established by a group of Nelson and Tasman women who wanted to con-

tribute something positive to the community in a targeted and specific way. Following discussions with local schools and teachers, and researching similar organisations from around the country, the group has decided that providing school and sports footwear fits well with their goals and as-pirations as well as a community need.Walk with Us is looking for sponsors and dona-tions and have already heard from Dave Hey-ward of Stirling Sports and Number One Shoes who are keen to be involved. To donate or become a sponsor for Walk With Us, contact Anne-Marie Teece on 027 544 8255 or [email protected] or get in touch with Nancy Cowling on 027 496 4720.

U Council Debt and Projected Debt: Tasman District Council currently has debt of more than $156 million. That debt is projected to rise to $310 million in the current Ten Year Plan. This is not affordable, sustainable or prudent. If and when interest rates rise this will place an unacceptable burden on ratepayers.

U Affordability of Rates: Tasman rates are high by national standards yet in Tasman we have relatively low incomes with a large population of retired people. Constantly increasing rates are crippling. Council needs to focus on core services to make thisa good and prosperous place to live; a place where people can afford to live in their own homes well after their retirement.

U Looking After our Environment: Tasman is a beautiful part of New Zealand with great opportunities for outdoor activities. We need to make sure that we look after our environment for future generations. We also need employment and economic prosperity and to do this we have to use our natural resources wisely. Water management and water quality are of the utmost importance to the district.

U Focus on Service: Council exists to serve the ratepayers and people of Tasman - not the other way round. I want to lead an enabling and customer friendly Council.

I am asking for your support to address the issues I have outlined by voting for me in the Local Elections in October.

*With any new kitchen purchased in September. Conditions apply.

While sitting on the Mapua wharf eating fish ‘n’ chips, en-joying the lilt of conversation and being mesmerised by the beauty around me, my at-tention was suddenly caught by the boats anchored in the channel. “Those boats have changed direction.” I stated. Much to the amusement of my co-fish ‘n’ chip eater, it took me a while to process the reason why. Of course, the tide had turned. It got me thinking, though. Where would those boats be without anchors? They would surely be taken way out to sea only to be returned to land again and dashed against the rocks.Do you feel like you are in the middle of a strong tide pulling

you somewhere that you don’t want to go?Values that you have held on to slowly being fragmented or diluted around you?Fighting against it seems to put a label on you: ‘Conservative’, ‘closed-minded’, ‘non-progres-sive’, ‘doesn’t like change’ – to name a few. Flip the coin.Replace those words with ‘rad-ical’, ‘uses the wisdom of his-tory’, ‘eyes wide open’, ‘holds tight to values’….strong.There is strength in belief. Whatever the cause (be it rug-by, recycling, marriage, loy-alty), to believe passionately shows strength. As a Christian, I believe. I be-lieve in a God who is strong. For God, there is nothing new under the sun.

I won’t call myself conservative for believing in him but I will label myself ‘radical’. To stand up for what our all-knowing God has deemed to be good for us in the face of a growing tide against God is radical.God is my rock and I trust him without a doubt. There is a fabulous old hymn titled “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?”The chorus goes like this:“We have an anchor that keeps the soul steadfast and sure while the billows roll, fastened to the rock which cannot move, grounded firm and deep in the saviour’s love”.Think about it: What is your anchor attached to? Antoinette Irvine - Hope Community Church.

Just a thought...

TOP POOL: The ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre has been judged CLM’s top facility of the year. Facility manager Vaughan Hope says credit goes to all the staff at the swimming complex who make sure the day-to-day jobs are done well and exceed expectations. “In my opinion they’re the best team operating an aquatics facility in the country,” he says.

Your favourite family friendly pharmacy is celebrating its’ 5th birthday. That’s five years of great service, five years of qual-ity health advice, and five years since owner Andrew opened the doors to McGlashen Phar-macy.Ever since the first customer walked through the door, McGlashen Pharmacy has built a strong customer base which is made up of local members of the community. People turn to

Andrew and the team for trust-ed family health advice, and are always well looked after in return. While it seems like just yester-day Andrew was first opening the pharmacy for business he says the last five years has been a fantastic time for him and the staff, the majority of whom have been there since the very beginning.“The community has well and truly supported the pharmacy,

and without them we wouldn’t be here today. It’s really pleas-ing to see our customers come through the doors time and again. And we would like to take the opportunity to thank the loyal customers who have been with us throughout the years. If you are looking for help with your health problems, then McGlashen Pharmacy is a great place to start. Andrew and his team of caring and ex-

pert staff can offer a wide range of advice, medications and products to suit your individual needs, and be-cause they understand health is not a one size fits all matter, they truly listen to what your personal health issues are. This understanding is what has kept locals returning to the pharmacy each time they are sick, or to treat their regular ailments with a pharmacy they can trust.

Having been open for five years, An-drew says the relationship the team has formed with the community is what makes opening the doors each day so enjoyable. Five years ago, some of his customers were bring-ing their babies in to see him, and now those children are heading off to school, and are just a little bit taller each time they visit with mum or dad. “It’s amazing to be able to watch

alongside a local family as they grow. We have some customers whose grandmother comes in, their kids and their grandkids, so a variety of generations who come in for help or advice. It’s pretty special.”Having children of his own now means Andrew is living and enjoy-ing the experience that his custom-ers do, so not only can he draw on his qualifications as a pharmacist to help you get to the bottom of your child’s health issues, but he can also speak from firsthand experience, as each day he learns something new with the twins, who are now 8 months old.Andrew prides himself on making things as easy as possible for his cus-tomers and so it’s not surprising that

he has gone out of his way to keep the pharmacy easy to access and convenient to visit, with two handy entrances, one off Queen St and the other opening out onto Warring Carpark. The back entrance features huge double doors for anyone ar-riving via wheelchair or pushing a pram, and opening into the public carpark means you’ll never struggle to find a park. McGlashen Pharmacy also has park-ing right in front of the back doors, which is perfect for the elderly, or people who find it hard to get around. Keeping things as simple as possible is so important to the team that you can even wait in the car until your prescription is all done. Andrew will

hand it to you straight through your window, which is particularly handy if you are not feeling well enough to leave the car, or if you have sick children with you. To complete the user friend-liness, the pharmacy also has a lovely children’s play area, complete with its own play-house which is extremely popular with the little ones. A trip to McGlashen pharmacy always keeps the kids enter-tained and happy, leaving you free to talk to Andrew and the team about what you need. It’s almost the time of year to start thinking about applying for the McGlashen Pharmacy Young Achiever Scholarship too. This scholarship has been run by the pharmacy for all of its five years, and offers a local person aged 16 or under a helping hand to achieve great things in their chosen field. Whether it be a

sport, art, music or other in-terest, if they excel at it or are on their way to doing great things, McGlashen Pharma-cy donate $1000 through the scholarship to help the indi-vidual achieve their goals. The scholarship is a great way for the pharmacy to give a lump sum to a young person who could really benefit from it says Andrew, and it is a nice way to give something back each year to the community that supports the pharmacy. “We sponsor quite a few things, but it is nice to be able to give a large amount of money in the form of a schol-arship, which we know will go towards helping someone achieve great things.”This year’s scholarship en-tries are due in to McGlashen Pharmacy by September 30. Applicant’s entries will be processed during the follow-ing four weeks, and the award will be presented to the suc-

cessful applicant during early November. Applicants for the Mcglashen Pharmacy Young Achiever Scholarship must be 16 years of age or under at the time of entry, live within the Nelson or Tasman district and show a promising future in their chosen field based on previous results.Don’t forget that you can also get passport photos done at McGlashen Pharmacy now, and they have great success in getting photos accepted the first time round. You should also ask them about their loyalty card, which is well known for its great value. Spend $30 when you visit and receive a stamp, then once you’ve collected ten stamps you receive $30 off your next purchase. This is a great way to save on the regular products you buy such as shampoo, condition-er or beauty products. The pharmacy will also have

a trade stand at this year’s masters Games with every-thing an athlete could ask for, which will be an exciting few days as people from all over the country descend on Nel-son to participate. Look out for them if you are partici-pating and go and get sorted with a bandage, brace or any-thing else you may require.Five years has simply flown by for the team at McGlash-en Pharmacy, and Andrew would like to thank each and every customer that has supported him. From those families that have visited him right from the very start, to customers that have only just recently made their first trip to the pharmacy, a huge thank you for your support. Head down and celebrate McGlashen Pharmacy’s 5th birthday this week, and help them celebrate five years of success in business, and many more to come.

Appleby School has a long history, having opened its doors more than 150 years ago.Over those years the school has forged an excellent reputation and made the papers many times. In recent years the school has hit the headlines for an additional reason – the success of its spring fair.As the first fair of the season, the Appleby School fair is regarded as one of the best in the region with attractions for everyone. From fairground activities, to

cafe-style food, locally grown produce and plants, quality goods in the silent auction and homegrown entertain-ment, this day out has it all.The school’s only fun-draising event of year has a history dating back decades when it was incorporated with the school pet day. From there is grew into its own event, regarded as the Appleby Market Day. In 1999 the fair as we know it today began its life. That year $4000 was raised, an amount which has grown exponentially year after year.

Appleby School is known for the musical talent of its stu-dents and to its credit is able to provide an entertainment line-up that relies heavily on school groups and ex-pupil tal-ent. Hay bale seating provides a real country feel. Food available for sale will be top-notch, including cakes, slices and sweet treats. There will be hot ham sandwiches, salmon kebabs, hamburgers, chicken wraps, sausages in bread and bottled water. The kids will be queuing for ice creams, toffee apples, candy floss and fizzy drinks.

There will be gluten-free options available as well as the Pomeroys cof-fee cart, all proceeds of which go to the school. The silent auction features items from generous sponsors from throughout the region and beyond. The highlight being a holiday package for a World of Wearable Art show in Wellington. The package includes two show tick-ets courtesy of World of Wearable Art, two nights’ luxury accommoda-tion at the Museum Art Hotel, return flights Nelson-Wellington thanks to House of Travel Richmond and a pre-paid dinner reservation at French Asian restaurant Chow.In addition there will be auctions for house and garden items, sports equipment, toys, gift baskets, books and subscriptions, restaurant and cafe vouchers, wine, firewood, timber

supplies, artworks and even a calf. Among the many holiday and travel packages is a $1000 motorhome vouch-er generously supplied by Road Abode.Eftpos is available for silent auction purchases and at the school office for cash out. A revised layout this year means the school has been able to accommodate more fairground attractions for the kids than ever before. There are pony rides, a pet-ting zoo, woodchopping display, two bouncy castles, face painting, big dig, wacky hair, cupcake decorating, gumboot throw, horizontal bungy and smashing crock-ery.If this wasn’t enough the famous haunted house re-turns, complete with its own Dracula lurking in the shadows – enter if you dare! Basketball pros the Giants will be shooting hoops with the kids and a digger driver will be on site with his machinery and a huge pile of material so the kids can have a go at digging and shifting it. For Mum, Dad and grandparents there’s fresh local eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts and produce for sale, along with delicious home-made

jams, chutneys and preserves. The dedicated plants team have been nurturing seedlings for months, ensuring there’ll be a great supply of citrus, fruit trees, herbs, shrubs, flaxes and grasses on sale.Plus, bargain hunters, check out the treasure troves of preloved items: clothes, furniture, books, toys and outdoor equipment.

Federal’s stranglehold on Nelson Hockey has been loosened, with Tasman clinching a thrilling penalty shootout victory during Saturday’s women’s final. But while the shock result went the way of Tasman, Federal proved too good in the men’s fi-nal, pushing out to a 3-0 lead in a pulsating fixture.Having led 2-0 within the open-ing stages, Tasman women found themselves staring down a 3-2 defeat to a Federal side it hadn’t beaten all season. But the side’s gamble to pull the goal keeper and add an eleventh outfield player with just eight

minutes on the clock proved to be a masterstroke with Bronie Edwards scoring in the final 30 seconds. The late equaliser sent Federal into a state of disbelief, while in turn, sky rocketing the confi-dence in the Tasman camp go-ing into a straight penalty shoot out. Two Federal players failed to score with Rebecca Kersten’s touch passing the keeper but also the playing turf, handing Tasman the trophy – just the

second time Federal has lost it in the past ten years. While the men’s final was more straight forward, the Federal side, which has an average play-ing age of around 40, could also call their result an upset, being unable to beat Tasman through-out the regular season. Craig Brett, who scored in the final, admits the result was “against the run of play”. “We hadn’t had a win against them all season and we had to be cautious with a few boys on yellow cards but we’re thrilled,” he says. “We’ve won it a few times so it was good to have it go our way.”

Sam McKenzie and Ellie Rukuwai of Nelson won South Island titles as the South Island’s top swim-mers converged at Blenheim’s Sta-dium 2000 Aquatic Centre over the weekend for the 2013 South Island Swimming Championships. The event was packed with excit-ing racing and outstanding perfor-mances from some of the country’s top swimmers as well as standout efforts from our local Top-of-the-South swimmers. Sam, 14, of the Nelson Swimming Club, blitzed the field for gold in the 50 Fly, 50 Free and 100 Free, in the 13-14 year old age group. He also brought home silver in the 200 Free and bronze in the 100 Fly and

broke several Nelson-Marlborough age group records (200 Free, 100 Free and 50 Fly). Ellie, 15, of Nelson South Swim-ming Club, took 15-16 year old age group titles in the 50 Breast and 100 IM and silver in her 100 Breast, also smashing the age group Nel-son-Marlborough records in the 100 & 200 IM as well as the open record for the 100 IM. Other Nelson swimmers putting in inspiring performances includ-ed Eddie Neill, Phillippa Dwyer, Amy Coulton, Samantha Trevurza, Clara Foster, Talya Harwood, Mad-isen Stanley and Kaine Ransby who brought home a truckload of med-als between them.

Jacks OPD are Nelson’s pre-mier netball champions for the second year in a row, and although they were the side lifting the trophy at full-time, Thursday night’s final certain-ly didn’t go to script. With only one loss in the pre-vious two seasons, thrashing their finals opponents by 30 points in the previous fixture and boasting the tag of num-ber one qualifiers, Jacks Of-fice Products Depot were hot favourites going into the pre-mier grade final against Rob-bie’s Bar and Bistro Richmond, and the scoreline of 50-47 was much tighter than the blow out predicted by some.In fact, Richmond had the up-per hand in the first two quar-ters, with ace shooter Nicki Rampton helping her side to a 27-24 lead at half-time.But Jacks OPD, who con-firmed their championship credentials right throughout the season, finally kicked into gear with some swift substitu-

tions having a sharp impact, pushing the team ahead 41-37 going into the final 15 min-utes.While the score was even at 43-43 with just minutes to go on the clock, Richmond just couldn’t regain the dominance it had in the opening two spells, and some late turnovers proved costly with Jacks OPD edging ahead by three to seal the victory.Jacks OPD coach Robyn Leon-ard, who was not afraid to drag under performing players on the night, says finals netball is a “different kettle of fish” and was not surprised to be pushed closely by Richmond. “We knew it was going to be very tough against them. They’ve got a lot of good expe-rience and a lot of very good athletes that have played some very high quality sports so we

always knew come the big one that they’d be there looking for the win,” she says. “Some people might have said Richmond were the under-dogs but I’d certainly never call them that.”Robyn knew her side had the ability to claw back into games, having come from behind to win a handful of fixtures earlier in the season. But she still admits to feeling nervous when Richmond shot out to an eight point lead in the first quarter. “I was think-ing ‘come on ladies’. But we’ve done that time after time this season and we knew if they got the lead that the most im-portant thing is not to panic because we can come back. It was a hard fought game right throughout.”And, having won the title last year as well, 2013’s effort seems to trump it, according to Robyn. “This year the whole premier competition has been tighter.”

Having been around since 2000, they’ve done the hard yards and to date have helped tens of thousands of businesses throughout New Zealand and Australia use the internet as an extremely powerful and effective sales and marketing tool. Zeald was formed by three young guys from Mangawhai Heads, and staying true to their small town roots, they ensure that there are consultants all over the country who are able to serve local businesses and their marketing needs.Marc Stewart is a Nelson man through and through and has called the city his home since he was a boy. His local knowledge and love for the community means he is the perfect Zeald representative to help small to medium businesses get ahead. As an ebusiness sales consultant he is able to work with many different businesses on setting up an effective and productive website, and see people get the results they deserve in return.

Passionate, professional and proven to get results, Marc has a long history in effective sales and marketing and truly knows his stuff when it comes to seeing small enterprises flourish.Check out a testimonial, from Zeald’s Nelson based client, Greg Buckett of O2B Healthy:

“I’m more than happy to endorse Zeald that’s for sure! Basically from turning the site on, on day one we doubled our sales - just from having it on! That’s all we did; we closed our old site down and turned the new Zeald one on. Then in the very first month we’d also doubled our sales. This was our 5th time building a website so we’ve started to get pretty experienced now. With other website companies you get told “We’ve got the best website and we’ll be able to make your

sales go up!” when actually they don’t and they just drop the ball! So far Zeald has been everything we’ve expected and more.”For web design that truly gets results, talk to Zeald’s Marc Stewart about his unique approach to web design and development. Let Marc generate measurable results for your business and find out why so many kiwi business owners choose Zeald over any other web design company.

Pines secure NZ titleSolly’s Nelson Pine are winners of the Volleyball New Zealand Club Championship for the second year running, sweeping North Harbour Raiders three sets to zip in Saturday night’s final. The toughest match of the tourna-ment appeared to be the semi final against former champions Sparta. Having beaten them in the final last year, Nelson Pine was forced to dig deep in another five set thriller.

Captain Patrick Shone was named the tournament MVP for the sec-ond year in a row and also and dou-bled up with the tournament’s top setter award. Nelson team mates Jack Redpath (best setter) and Blue Glue (best spiker) were also praised with selection in the tournament team. The three, who are all part of the national team, flew off to Asia on Sunday to represent New Zea-land.

Livinia Tregidga of Appleby School competes against Enner Glynn during the final round of Future Ferns netball.

There was fun, fun, fun at the Tac-tix Future Ferns Final at Saxton Courts on Saturday. All teams wore their netball uniforms however they were asked to dress up for the occa-sion with Tactix colours of red and black. The day began with a mass warm up before each team played three games.Teams went to great lengths to em-bellish their attire, faces and hair. Mapua Mavericks had spent last Sunday creating their team banner, and then they had a practice to make sure they could play with the “huge Minnie Mouse bows” in their hair. The Mavericks went all out as they had a table set up in front of their team banner, with refreshments (complete with chocolate cake iced with red and black) their team pho-

to was autographed, straws and ser-viettes completed the red and white spot theme. It was warming to hear that the girls had helped every step of the way.I talked to the girls between games (and between mouthfuls of choco-late cake!) Denim said she loved everything about netball, but shoot-ing was her favourite part.Olivia said she tried not to contact and has learnt to control her body, while Chloe has played for three years and loved playing goal keep. Holly enjoyed learning different techniques at training. Rhea knows

she has a long reach that she uses well at goal defence. When asked their toughest opposition Brydie could remember that they were defeated 24-4 but along with her team mates couldn’t remember the name of the team. Tiarne said she loves netball because you make new friends and it’s heaps of fun.Angel said she tries hard to get out in the open and tries not to knock the ball out of the hands of other players. Jess’ favourite player is Irene van Dyke because she is a re-ally nice person and a good player. And when asked what their coach had taught them this year there was a chorus of replies – spread out, dodge, come forward, fast passes and jump! That’s a whole lot of skills and knowledge.

Vegetation Control – Roadside Spraying in Rural Areas Registration of Non-Spray AreasTasman District Council’s roading maintenance contractor is responsible for vegetation control within the road reserve. This includes the use of knock-down, residual and brushweed herbicides to remove vegetation growing in the roadway and around street furniture. The contractor is also responsible for control of pest plants and other noxious weeds such as gorse, fennel, hemlock, blackberry, broom, bracken, purple pampas grass and box thorn.Residents can request that their rural property frontage not be chemically sprayed and instead undertake the vegetation control themselves. On approval Council will mark the no spray area with red marker pegs.Rural residents who choose the “no spray” option must control the vegetation growth along their property frontage to ensure road users are not impeded and all roadside signs and markers are clearly visible. Vegetation height should not exceed 300mm. Any stormwater drainage ditches need to be kept clear of excess vegetation. At intersections vegetation must be kept well clear to ensure good sight lines for traffic using the intersection. If you wish to apply for your property to be added to the “No Spray” list, please contact Robyn Scherer, Engineering Secretary, Tasman District Council, Ph. 03 543 8524 or Email [email protected]

Roadside SprayingContractors employed by New Zealand Transport Agency undertake an ongoing vegetation control programme to ensure that roadside vegetation does not affect the safety or operation of the region’s state highway network. This programme includes the spraying of chemical herbicides including the following active ingredients: Glyphosate, Metsulfuron, Terbuthylazine and Triclopyr. Persons wishing to register their property as a ‘no-spray’ zone, which requires a commitment to maintain a property’s highways frontage to specifications provided by NZTA, may do so by contacting Lea O’Sullivan or Donna Hills on Ph. 03 548 1099 at Opus International Consultants, c/- Private Bag 36, Nelson.

Rural Land Review – Public Meeting ProgrammeOver the last 15 years the Tasman District has experienced continuing pressure for subdivision and development, particularly residential development, in rural areas including on land with high productive value. This is a powerful force for change in rural areas and the Council wants to discuss with the community to decide what you want to see happen, now and for the future. It is an issue that affects the whole District not just rural areas.
