1The photo application should attempt to be a visual replica of the written application. In other words, by merely going through the supporting photo application, the panel evaluating your application must be able to determine what you want to do. Doing this properly is in your own best interest since the panel members are not able to do a pre-application site visit. The saying is: “a picture is worth a thousand words.” If the file becomes too big we will try to reduce its size in Adobe Acrobat. The following example is of the Khaima Hiking trail project and is used with their approval.

What the project plans to do The project wants to revive the Khaima hiking trail and build some infrastructure for it. A map of the Pofadder Hiking trail follows below.

One of the areas the hiking trail go passes through is Soramoedes, a Nama word that means “Only God sees you”.

The project wants to build facilities like these on the trail.

The project wants to safe cost by using local material such as palmtrees and reed that are freely to build many of the facilities, such as toilets, overnight huts, and even a new tourist facility where bookings will be made

Why the previous hiking trail collapsed.

Koos Louw, a local guesthouse owner and the person in charge of the hiking trail retired 2 years ago and since then the hiking trail was not maintained. However, even in his time the hiking trail was very successful.

The project will be sustainable because it will link up with other local tourism initiatives.

A start or endpoint for the hiking trail will be the guesthouse that the Anglo Mines will hand over to the municipality in Dec 2006.

In front of the guesthouse is the Orangeriver that is used for swimming, fishing, and canooing.

The local hoodia and will form part of the agri-tourism leg of the integrated local tourism plan. In addition the local mine already has open days on Thursdays.

The local village of Pella, a starting or end point, has a cultural centre.

Pella has also a Roman Catholic church that is visited by many.

Pella forms the starting point also for a well established 4 x 4 route.

The hiking trial will, together with the other local tourism activities, be advertised in the Northern Cape Tourist guide.

The tourism office in Pella, run by the local municipality, will handle all bookings for the tourism route in the first 2 years.

Longterm plans with the project. For the first 2 years the project will be run by the municipality who will identify and train locals to take it over. After 2 years the project will be handed over to the locals.

The local arts and craft centre in Pella was first run by the municipality and then handed over to a private entrepreneur.
