‘When making the final assessment of that of one person we should measure the depth of his life rather than the length.’ (from Kung Fu; Chow & Spangler) 5. AUTHOR’S NOTE During writing as well as during practising it became apparent that Yo-jujutsu is almost inexhaustible and that because of that our initial attempt to produce a summary on this martal art may be called euphemistic. Where we dare to tick off defence methods against a street-fighter or a gunman, a number of specialized books and video’s on this matter are already published. Nevertheless we have endured to describe techniques in sofar they are found to be relevant for this home-course on self-defence. If you want to control the techniques in such a way that the execution of it has evolved to a second nature, to an intuitive action (ri ), then daily practice is indispensable. In that case you really will become a martial art artist. In general it is preferable to make a selection of techniques and practice these so frequently that they are well controlled. For example, it is far more important to execute a knife-hand block or strike perfectly, then to know how you should defend yourself against a bayonet charge.

No matter how experienced you are, you have to take into account that in a real fight you have to take blows, kicks etc. Harding of your hands, arms, thighs and legs is a special training. Therefore we will make a plea for considering exercises as an extensive physical- and mental training, as a meditation in motion and not primarily as a fighting technique, just as the Japanese meditated on his sword or flowers. Remember that the best fight is the avoided fight. Despite the fact that I personally started exercising jujutsu as late as the age of 50, I consider it as a gain in my life, from which I nearly 15 years later gather the flowers day by day. I like to thank Rachel, Frits and Ben cordially for their enduring and humoristic co-operation. And Frits, you are a fantastic teacher. This work was initially intended to make it plausible that martial art goes beyond the mere techniques of self-defence. We sincerely hope we have succeeded a little bit and also that this work of some way can be of benefit for you. We want to thank you for your attention and end, like we started, with words of Thaddeus Golas:

‘Thank you, brothers and sisters, for

letting my consciousness be in this place.’ Paul Leistikow
