Events1677 – The future Mary II of England marries William, Prince of Orange, later they jointly reign (1689 - 1702) as William III and Mary II. 1825 – The Erie Canal is completed joining the Great Lakes with New York. On this day Governor DeWitt Clinton performs a “Wedding of The Waters” ceremony in New York Harbour.1890 – City & South London Railway: London's first deep-level tube (powered by third rail electrics at 500V) railway opens between King William Street and Stockwell.

Events1921 – The Sturmabteilung (SA) aka “Brown Shirts” is formed by Adolf Hitler1922 – In Egypt, archaeologist Howard Carter’s water carrier find the entrance to Pharaoh Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings.

He wires Lord Carnarvon (his sponsor) to come, and on 26 November 1922, with others also in attendance, Carter made the famous "tiny breach in the top left hand corner“ and the tomb is disturbed.

Events1939 – U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt orders the United States Customs Service to implement the Neutrality Act of 1939, allowing cash-and-carry weapons purchases and thus, effectively, ending the arms embargo and opening the US to claims of favouritism.1952 – The United States government establishes the National Security Agency under US Dept. of Defense. NSA involves cryptanalysis and cryptography for the collection and analysis of foreign communications and foreign signals intelligence, as well as protecting U.S. government communications and information systems.

Events1956 – Soviet troops enter Hungary to end the Hungarian revolution against the Soviet Union, that started on October 23. Thousands are killed, more wounded, and nearly a quarter million leave. Hungary regains independence in 1989.1960 – At Kasakela (Tanzania) Dr. Jane Goodall observes chimpanzees creating tools, the first-ever observation in non-human animals. 19801980 – Ex Actor & Governor of California Ronald Reagan defeats in-post President Jimmy Carter (ex farmer) to become US President. He is nearly 70 when he takes Office

Events1993 – A China Airlines Boeing 747- 409 overruns Runway 13 at Hong Kong's Kai Tak International Airport while landing during a typhoon, injuring 22 of the 396 on board. The pilot is censured for failing to follow the “missed approach” procedure.1974 – Judith Ward, 25 “The M62 bomber” was convicted of the murder of 12 people aboard an army coach which had been travelling on the motorway. She spent 18 years in jail before her conviction was quashed in 1992 by the Appeal Court; the conviction had been "secured by ambush” and that government forensic scientists had withheld crucial information.

Events1994 – San Francisco holds the first conference that focusing on the commercial potential of the World Wide Web. The Mosaic browser (good for graphics) had been launched the year before.2008 – Barack Obama becomes the first African-American to be elected President of the US after narrowly defeating John MaCain.2008 – Proposition 8 passes in California, revoking state recognition of LGBT ("lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender“) marriages.
