Introduction:

The ZSS-MS is an industrial grade, pressure sensitive, 4-wire safety switch mat and control reliable safety system. The ZSS-MS is a safety device that is an integral part of the machine safety circuit. It is designed to protect personnel and objects from hazardous machine conditions. The ZSS-MS complies with Standards EN1760-1:1998, EN954-1 and is CE Compliant.

The ZSS-MS Safety System:

The ZSS-MS has two main components; a 4-wire safety switch mat and a category 3 control reliable safety relay controller. The safety switch mat part of the system is a normally open, 4-wire momentary contact pressure switch covered in heavy-duty diamond plate vinyl. The control part of the system is a control reliable safety relay with cross monitored outputs. As a system, the two parts work in conjunction with one another to continuously monitor the machine safety system and control power to dangerous conditions of the machine.

How it Works:

The system works by monitoring a small amount of current through the safety switch mat by the controller. When a person or object, i.e. forklift, comes in contact with the safety switch mat, the Zippswitch™ Sensing Strips close and an increase of current is detected by the controller. This action causes the safety relay output contacts to open and shut power off to the machine. Once the obstruction is removed and any danger is cleared, the system will need to be manually reset restoring power to the machine.

The ZSS-MS is used in a wide variety of industries including Automotive, Wood Working, Transportation and Door Industries.

Design of the ZSS-MS Safety Switch Mat System:

The ZSS-MS has two main components, a 4-wire safety switch mat and a category 3 control reliable safety relay controller.

Safety Controller:

The category 3 safety relay controller consists of a power supply circuit, a 4-wire safety switch mat circuit, 2 normally-open cross monitored forced guided relays output circuit, a reset circuit and led status indicators. The controller is packaged in a 35 mm din-rail mount enclosure.

Safety Switch Mat:

The subcomponents of the 4-wire safety switch mat consists of series wired Zippswitch™ sensing strips, heavy-duty diamond plate vinyl top, ribbed vinyl bottom, 4-wire cable, factory installed extruded PVC ramped edging, ¼” mounting holes and a high visibility safety border.

Large Areas to Protect:

The safety switch mat is designed to cover large areas by adding multiple safety switch mats to the configuration. The square edge design allows for activation between safety switch mats without the use of active strips or joining strips. In addition, the safety controller is rated for up to 100 SQFT of safety switch mats.

Thru-Hole Mounting

The ZSS-MS eliminates the need for a costly trim kit. Every safety switch mat comes standard with thru-holes around the edges. This allows for easy installation of the safety switch mat. We offer cost savings, right out of the box.

Safe Distance Formula:

The minimum distance formula for floor-mounted safety mats in millimeters as given in EN999 is:

S = (1600 x T) + 1200

Where:S = minimum active distance (mm)1600 = the approach speed (mm/s)T = the overall system stopping time (s)1200 = stride length and arm reach (mm)Note that the overall system stopping time, T, is given by the following calculation:

T = t1+ t2

Where:

t1 = The maximum response time in seconds of the safety device between the actuation of the sensor and the generation of a stop signal to the machine < 0.050 seconds.

t2 = The worst case elapsed time (in seconds) between the machine receiving a stop signal from a safety device and the dangerous parts coming to rest.

The overall system response time, T, should be measured several times and the highest value recorded. Also, a suitable allowance for brake deterioration should be added to this value. The protected area should extend from this calculated minimum active distance to the base of the protected machine.

Once S is calculated, the width and length of the safety switch mat(s) can be determined.
