By John UlajThe time is fast ap-
proaching where we willusher in the holidays andthe new year. I want towish everyone a veryMerry Christmas, as wellas a prosperous yearahead.Often, we celebrate
Christmas with an ex-change of presents, or byother material means. But afterward, we oftenstill feel a palpable void,an emptiness that indi-cates that something re-mains unresolved.
What’s lacking inour lives?Just the otherday I was speak-ing with afriend, whohappens to

the cost of home insur-ance here in Ham-tramck?If so, the city has
some helpful news.The Insurance Service
Offices (ISO) recently up-graded the city’s abilityto fight fires from aClass 5 to a Class 4.The ISO rating is used
by most insurance com-panies in determiningyour homeowner’s insur-ance premium. Home-owners can use this newrating to challenge theircurrent insurance cost.A Class 1 rating is the
best while a Class 10rating is the worst.Fire Chief Paul Wilk
credits the better classrating to the increasedamount of training by theFire Department, theAuto-Aide ResponseAgreement with Detroit, and the hard work anddedication of the city’sfirefighters.City Manager Katrina
Powell attributed thework of the Fire Depart-ment for the good news.“Kudos to the Fire De-
partment and to ourDPW department thatassisted with the analy-sis. Great job,” she saidin an email. In recent years the
number of house fires inthe city has dropped dra-matically. There are nowonly about two or threemajor house fires eachyear. One of the majorfactors for that decreaseis the city has aggres-sively demolished va-cant homes that arebeyond repair.

be a small businessowner, who was feelingvery discouraged aboutlife in general. I felt com-pelled to remind him of allthe blessings that Godhas provided to us: Finehealth; our children, wives and friends; pros-perity.I encouraged him to be
of good cheer, and to findstrength in God’s bounty.I also reminded him thatthere was a reason hewas here: to become ashining light in a darkworld. He seemed to mar-vel at my words, andthanked me for them, say-ing they had “made hisday.”My point is, we all need
to help strengthen oneanother; there will bedays when you may bestrong where I am feeling
weak, and this illustratesthe importance of beingone’s brother’s keeper. There’s the old saying
that “no one is an island”-- in fact, these conceptshave long been hallmarksof our churches: helpingthe needy or bereft, betheir needs material, spir-itual, or some combina-tion of the two. Without Jesus Christ,
the Son of God, therewould be no Christmas. He brings that hope ofsalvation. We can all-too-easily
come to dwell on our pastdifficulties or failures, orwallow in self-pity. Or, wecan chose to reflect on allthe wonderful things weare blessed with on adaily basis and rejoice, praising God appropri-ately for His every “good
and perfect gift.”Why give thanks during
difficult times, you mayask? The main reason is that
it causes us to shift ourfocus, because we mustlook up rather than down.Psalms 107: 21-22 af-firms this: “Let them givethanks to the Lord for Hisloving kindness, and forHis wonders to the sonsof men! Let them alsooffer sacrifices of thanks-giving, and tell of Hisworks with joyful singing.”Many of us will experi-
ence some sort ofdifficulties fromtime to time. Wemust remaingrateful, and fo-cused on theProvider, not

Early Childhood Elemen-tary celebrated pajama andwinter stories day onWednesday, December 9.One of several books readwas “The Polar Express.”The book was written by
local Michigan author, ChrisVan Allsburg. The book isset partially in GrandRapids, Michigan, the au-thor's home town. It was adapted as
an Oscar nominated mo-tion picture film in 2004.At the premier of themovie, Van Allsburg statedthat Pere Marquette 1225,formerly owned by Michi-gan State University andnow owned by the SteamRailroading Institute inOwosso, Michiga n, was theinspiration for the storyline. Van Allsburg stated that

By Charles SercombeLast Friday Ham-
tramck’s Muslim commu-nity sent out a messageto the world that Islam isa religion of peace.About 200 people,
mostly men from Ham-tramck’s Bengali andYemeni communities, held a rally in ZussmanPark on Friday afternoon. The event was organizedby a new group calledUnited and Concerned Cit-izens of Hamtramck. Some 20 speakers,
many who spoke on thefly, talked about Islam andrailed against those whocommit terrorist acts inthe name of that religion.“Muslims are the
biggest victims of ISIS
and its terrorism. We arejust as shocked and horri-fied as all other peacefulcitizens across America,”said Mohammed KamrulHassan in a press re-lease issued at the rally.“No religion condones themurder of innocent civil-ians, barbaric beheadingof scholars or desecrationof houses of worship. Re-ligions are about love –not hate.”On the scene were sev-
eral television news sta-tions and other mediaoutlets. The rally lastedfor an hour.Several of those attend-
ing held banners andsigns. “We denounce ISIS and
condemn terrorism
against humanity,” saidone banner.Frank Woodman held up
a sign saying: “We standwith our Muslim neigh-bors.”Mohammed Islam said
there has to be a two-pronged approach to ter-rorism in this country: Notto allow extremism andgun control. He also added that par-
ents need to watch whattheir children are lookingat on the internet. Thosewho fall prey to violence,he said, are “misguided.”Ibrahim Aljahim noted
that some of the backlashfrom non-Muslims in thiscountry is the result of ig-norance. There is a per-ception of some that once
Muslims take control oflocal governments, therewill be Sharia Law.There were some re-
ports in conservativemedia outlets that whenHamtramck’s city councilbecame a Muslim major-ity Sharia Law went intoeffect.“There will never be
Sharia Law, ever, ever, ever,” he said. The rise in terrorism,
Hassan said later in themeeting, is making somemembers of the Muslimfaith to question wheretheir religion is going.“The entire Muslim
world is at a crossroads,”he said.

quickly bought up andoccupied by either thenew owner or renters. That increase in value
has translated intokeener awareness of firesafety, said Wilk.

By Greg KowalskiFor a while, on a recent
Sunday afternoon, wetook a look at ChristmasPast in Hamtramck. The venue was the
Hamtramck HistoricalMuseum where we hadcookies, coffee andcocoa to go along withPowerPoint presentationof photos going back tothe 1930s of Christmasbeing celebrated in Ham-tramck. For old-time Hamtram-
ckans, there were a lot offamiliar faces and sights.Mayor Al Zak was at thepark, Fr. Peter Walkowiak, pastor of St. FlorianChurch, was shownstanding by a crèche inabout 1938, and we gotto see various photos ofJos. Campau decoratedfor the holidays. There even was an as-
sortment of Christmasads from some of the oldgreat stores includingMax’s Jewelry, Kresge’sdime store and Federal’s.For those of us who grewup in Hamtramck, thosestores were the places toshop, especially duringthe Christmas season.I can still remember
walking with my mom andsister up one side of Jos.Campau and down theother. We’d start with dinner
at Nichol’s, then hit allthe dime stores, andmaybe Jeanette’s bookstore to pick up someChristmas cards or theBetter Made store to getsome incredibly fresh
chips to take home. Orwe might stop at Sweet-land’s for candy. Itseemed we could findwhatever we needed onCampau.Things change, of
course. Mom is gone.So is Mayor Zak and Fr.Walkowiak, and Jos.Campau isn’t nearly whatit used to be. But nobody lives for-
ever, at least not on theearth, and buildings, likepeople change and even-tually die too. Even theHamtramck HistoricalMuseum is housed in abuilding has gonethrough many changes inits long lifetime. It origi-nally housed the Wisperand Schwartz depart-ment store nearly 100years ago. That wasHamtramck’s first depart-ment store. Talk abouthistory.Even old-timers don’t
remember Wisper andSchwartz, although manypeople do recall the lateruse of the building as abarber school. A lot ofour visitors say they gottheir hair cut there -- forbetter and for worse. That wasn’t the onlyother use for the build-ing. It also was a dollarstore for a time and it satvacant for a couple ofyears before it found newlife as the museum. At the presentation, we
also showed somescenes that don’tchange. There was aphoto of the “kids’ table”at a Christmas dinner
years ago. Anyone whohas a large family andsmall house will recog-nize that. And there wasa photo of a Christmasconcert at St. Florian, with a choir singing. Thatcould have been takennearly a century ago in-stead of less than a yearago. Some things are con-
sistent. They give us an-chors as we grow older.Links to the past that wehold dear, although it’susually best not to looktoo closely at those tiessince the “gold ol’ days”never were all that great. We know because we
are surrounded by thepast at the museum. Wehave a thorough under-standing of the good andthe bad parts of our his-tory, and one thing wehave learned is that it isgood to study the past, toknow it and understandit. But our eyes are onthe front of our heads, not the back. You have tolook forward. We’re doing that at the
museum in a way thatties into this brief Christ-mas tale. The museumhas brought new life intoa building that was es-sentially dead. Maybethis is a more appropri-ate theme for an Easterstory, about resurrection. But this is a tale of birthtoo. Of creating some-thing new that can growand have an influencethat will expand over theyears ahead and gener-ate more growth in the
community. And like Christmas, this
is a plan built on faith, ofdetermination and opti-mism that so far hasproven to be true everystep of the way. We haveovercome enormousodds to open this mu-seum, but we never lostfaith that we could do it.Keep that in mind as
you look around you. Hamtramckans tend to
cherish their memories. Many times I have heardresidents and former res-idents say this was agreat city to grow up in.We played ball in thestreets and drove our bi-cycles between cars, butthat was good enough forus. And Christmas was an
extra special time as weall got together.Hamtramck was one
big family, and if youthink about it, it still is.There are many people inthis town sharing theirlives and experiences, building relationships.Whether it’s at the localcoffee shop, dollar store,a restaurant, mosque orchurch, we are all Ham-tramckans together. As we go forward into
the future our goal is toturn the museum into acommunity focal pointwhere we can all gatherto appreciate everythingthis city is, all that it wasand all it will be for manymore Christmases -- andother holidays of all na-tionalities and faiths -- tocome.

Giving … The goodfolks at Holy CrossParish collected 120toys, many of themcoming from Mom &Pop’s Toy Shop on Jos.Campau, and donatedthem to FriendshipHouse.
That donation will goa long way in makingmany kids have a happyChristmas. Now that is truly the
spirit of the season.
Light up … We didn’thave much space in
this week’s issue, butwe would be remiss ifwe didn’t mention whata great get-togethermany enjoyed lastThursday at ZussmanPark. The city held a sea-

there, and about 100folks gathered to cele-brate the new renova-tions at the park. The city has done a

In Eph-esians 5:20,Paul remindshis readersthat we are to“always (be)giving thanksfor all thingsin the nameof our LordJesus Christto God, eventhe Father.”Paul also coun-sels the Colos-sians that,“Whatever we do in wordor deed, do all in thename of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Himto God the Father.”Sadly, we live in a world
today in which someseem bent only on the de-struction of civilization. These individuals woulddo well to focus on the fa-miliar holiday phrase,“Peace on Earth.”
The first ad-vent occurredin a manger:the birth ofChrist, a sym-bolic gesture ofGod’s uncondi-tional love forthe world. Thesecond adventtakes placewhen Christ(God in theflesh) de-scends fromheaven and re-deems human-
ity from self-destruction. Giving thanks for all
things in life was once --and shall remain -- thehallmark of Christmas.May the hope that wasborn that first silent, holynight remain in your heartthroughout the entirecoming year.A Merry Christmas to

By Merima SkapurSpecial to The ReviewRecently, Archdeacon
Justin of the Rwandan An-glican Church spoke toHamtramck High Schoolstudents about the heal-ing, forgiveness, and recon-ciliation his countryexperienced following thegenocide in 1994. The stories he shared,
many being his own experi-ences, were too awful toperceive. Rwanda, a very small
country in the heart ofAfrica, suffered from massmurder totaling over onemillion casualties in only a90-day span. The fightbegan amongst the twoethnic groups called theHutu and the Tutsi. The Tutsi were known for
owning plenty of cows, which gave them the rankof being the highest caste. The Hutu were known as
the middle caste farmers.Great tension had grownbetween the two groupsand that is when the hor-rendous war erupted. As Pastor Justin said:
“Genocide was horrible.” A bundle of the three
most threatening dangers— starvation, dehydration, and agony — overpoweredthese people. Pastor Justinsaid that if you were to seewhat occurred in Rwandaat the time, you wouldn’tbelieve for a second thatthis country could becomewhole again because it isbeyond our human under-standing.Everyone thought that
Rwanda, a war-torn shat-tered country, would not beable to return to its exis-tence. But it did and suc-cessfully so.The government brought
back order into the countryby setting laws to lead peo-
ple's lives. However, theestablishment of laws was-n’t as effective in the be-ginning of the recoveryprocess. Many people were left
emotionally and physicallyscarred for life from thegenocide. Many loved oneswere killed. It wasn’t aneasy task to reside in thesame society with the per-son who killed a familymember. However, with the collab-
oration between thechurches and the govern-ment, people were able togradually grant forgivenessto the sinners. This is ex-actly how every person inRwanda was able to heal. With the power of forgive-ness came peace withineach and every soul inRwanda.
