1. Performance. Understand the basic policies and regulations that govern the handling/use of hazardous materials.
2.Condition.
a. Given:
(1) Reference material;
(2) Formation/base/unit HAZMAT policies; and
(3) Supervision;
b. Denied: nil; and
c. Environment: day and night in all types of conditions.
3. Standard. The candidate will, in accordance with the references, understand the basic policies andregulations that govern the handling/use of hazardous material.
4. Teaching Points
a. Explain the definition of hazardous materials; Ref a, para 2 b. Explain Civil Legal liabilities; Ref a, para 13c. Briefly explain the following:
(1) Route of entry; Ref c, chap 2, para 3-4(2) Natural protection; and Ref c, chap 2, para 5-6(3) Effects of hazardous material; Ref c, chap 2, para 7-9
d. Explain that each hazardous material or product used
by the CF has a DND hazardous material guide sheetwhich explains the following about the
material/product (use a sheet of a product to be seen on
the course, ie Dextron II, Stock No. 9150-21-852-
58661):
Ref d
(1) Identification;(2) Hazardous identification;(3) Storage;(4) Physical data;(5) Fire/explosion data;(6) Dangerous ingredients;
(7) Incompatibility (an example which can beused is when antifreeze mixed with battery
acid, the result is highly explosive);(8) Health hazard data;(9) Preventative measures;(10) First aid measures;(11) Spill instructins; and(12) Remarks (NOTE - ensure that course staff
