In July 2014, Sydney Institute, in conjunction with the 40K Foundation Australia, is looking for 10 student leaders to take up an exciting opportunity in India for one month. There is a $2000 travel grant* for each selected student and the opportunity to gain at least 2 extra units of competencies.

40K GLOBE - What’s in it for YOU?

Opportunity - A unique opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those who need it and to take a life-changing, educational journey to a country that is developing into one of the world’s most powerful nations.

Improve Your Employability – In a competitive workplace candidates with international experience are one step ahead.

Challenge Yourself - You will be challenged consistently to find innovative ways to make an impact on the lives of underprivileged children.

Teamwork – You will work in teams on tailored projects aimed at developing your skills.

Cultural Exposure - Through your interactions with the local people, a series of talks with prominent business leaders and free time to explore the country, you will gain an invaluable cultural experience.

40K believe in doing Good: Business. This means we promote social entrepreneurship to create real change in people’s lives. See www.40k.com.au.

The Australian students we want to attract are thirsty for visions of a better world. They’re desperately keen to learn, discuss, and more importantly want to do something about it.

The Globe Program offers students the opportunity to build their social business skills and their initiative in a real world scenario that means they have an opportunity to make a real difference. They learn a hell of a lot by thinking strategically with their team and putting their plans into action, and the financial gains help to support the 40K PLUS education pods.

Why Get Involved with the Globe Program

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi

This coming July, 40K is offering 40 lucky tertiary students a chance to make a real humanitarian contribution in the world whilst experiencing the culture and excitement of one of the world’s fastest growing developing nations. Of that 40, 10 will be coming from Sydney Institute!

At 40K we don’t just talk about poverty eradication- we believe in ACTION and EDUCATION. We think that the best way for someone to effect a positive change in the world is to make a hands-on contribution to increasing the standard of living and educational capital of young people who need it most…young people who deserve a fighting chance at equality.

Program Outline

The one month program is based in the villages just outside the city of Bangalore and is comprised of two parts:

1) You will work in teams each afternoon helping in the delivery of the 40K PLUS pods. Here, you will give children the additional assistance they need to achieve their education goals.

2) You will have the opportunity to work in teams on tailored projects designed by 40K to develop your skills and assist 40K building new social businesses within the communities they work in.

40K PLUS pod is a dynamic after school education program that focuses on maths, English and life skills for village kids.

Appendix 1 provides an overview of a participant’s day - Daily experiences of a 40K Glober. Program structure is tabled in Appendix 2.

(b) Ensure you have enough funds for this trip.

(c) Complete the application forms (40K + Sydney TAFE), include your CV, a copy of your latest transcript and a copy of passport AND email to [email protected] by 4 April 2014.

If you are successful, you will be invited for interviews by a teaching panel and then the final round with 40K. Refer to Student Selection Process and Timeline (Pg 4).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) 1) What sort of person/skills do you need to have to participate?

You will need to be at least 18 years old, an enrolled student of Sydney TAFE in Certificate IV, Diploma, Advance Diploma and Higher Ed during the tour.

40K is calling all lateral thinkers with open minds and a thirst for adventure!

Participants should demonstrate the following qualities:

Open-mindedness - In order to truly benefit from the experience students will need to be open-minded. They will be exposed to culture vastly different from their own. Students who embrace the culture (even immerse themselves in it) are likely to come away with a more memorable experience.

Initiative - Both programs require students to take serious initiative. This is important if they are to have a significant impact on the children. The program will provide students with a number of hours every day to interact with them- we will provide some guidance and tips on activities and techniques but the rest is up to them. Again for the special projects students will need to be proactive in order to truly OWN the project and deliver something of value.

Sensitivity and Respect - During the induction sessions 40K will provide students with cultural awareness training, however ultimately it is up to the student to behave in a manner that is respectful and sensible.

Participants should demonstrate the following skill-set:

Creativity/Problem solving: This is probably the key skill that Globers should possess in their interactions with the children. They need to get involved and respond confidently to unfamiliar situations with novel ideas.

Effective communication skills: In India, there will be times where language barriers demand that students discover other modes of communication with children – through games, drawings or simply showing them affection. Good written and oral communication skills are important in student’s correspondence with staff supervisors and for carrying out their projects.

Opportunity creating abilities: Students should be friendly, open and interested in order to create bonds within India and to further assist their careers and for the goals of 40k. They should possess a willingness for self-enhancement and interest in learning.

Diligence and time-management: This is an important skill regarding the student’s individual project. On the last weekend of the program students will be expected to present their project (whether it is completed or not) to the rest of the group.

Teamwork: Students will need to work in teams if they are to be successful in a challenging and different environment. Meeting new people and developing friendships is an important part of the program.

2) Airfare - flight bookings to Bangalore

Students are required to book their individual flights. Students are encouraged to arrive two days before the program start date. Start dates will be provided.

3) Food – what do students eat?

Indian food will be included as part of the program cost. Food will not be particularly spicy and vegetarian options are available (however we do request that students notify of any eating requirements prior to departure). Food will generally include curries, biryani, naan, samba (a gravy) with rice etc. We encourage students to take on the India experience and immerse themselves in the local food. If students desire to have a western option (after a week of Indian food they may feel like a simple salad or a hamburger) they can catch an auto rickshaw to MG Road (45 minutes away from their accommodation) where they can find a range of Western options. These meals are likely to cost approximately 200 Rupees ($4-$5), which is expensive for India.

4) Immunisations for India – what is needed and how much?

It is highly recommended that you consult with your GP or travel doctor to determine your individual immunisation needs. How much it will cost you will vary depending s on whether you had any injections before and the type of health insurance cover you have. The following is the list and cost of immunisations is a guide, assuming you have no prior injections:

Inoculations required for the trip Cost without any health cover Cost with health cover

Hepatitis B $30e $30e

Hepatitis A $110e $30e

Dukoral $50e $30e

Typhoid $60e $30e

Rabies $90e $30e

Meningitis $60e $30e

Tetanus $15e $15e

TOTAL $415e $195e

HOWEVER, many students will have already had some of these injections through the government public schooling program or from prior travel.

If they have their own private health cover, or are still under their parents’ health cover, they are likely to be reimbursed by their private health fund. Almost every health fund has the following policy: The first $30 of any individual injection is borne by the individual, and anything on top of that is covered by the health fund.

Students are encouraged to contact their health fund to determine policy coverage.

6) Travel insurance – what are the essentials to cover?

Travel Insurance is an absolute must. We require that all participants provide 40K with a copy of their insurance policy prior to departure. Students without insurance policies will not be permitted to travel. In terms of what coverage is necessary, the policy needs to be chosen with the following in mind:

MUST HAVE

Medical Expenses – for a minimum of $10,000,000

 Dental – for a minimum of $5,000,000

Medical evacuation and repatriation – for a minimum of $10,000,000

Non-medical evacuation and repatriation – for a minimum of $10,000,000

Coverage for one year of medical costs if repatriated

SHOULD HAVE

 Personal Liability

 Replacement passports and travel documents

 Emergency luggage

 Luggage and personal effects

 Travel delay

 Emergency accommodation expenses

If a student has a pre-existing ailment they will need to take particular care in selecting an insurance policy. Most of the ordinary policies do not cover for pre-existing conditions.

It is important for students to understand that 40K will not be held liable in the event that in insufficient insurance policy was purchased. Students will be required to fill out an exclusion of liability form prior to departure.

7) Is there 40k support in Bangalore?

There is a full time 40K employee, Rachel Bennett, who is the 40K Country Manager. Rachel has been in India for a number of years and is extremely familiar with Bangalore and the surrounding area. Rachel has a Masters in International Development. There will also be 10-12 40K Team Leaders, who are returned Globers themselves and whom are very familiar with the program. They have received additional training in group management to support you.

Appendix 1: Daily experiences of a 40K Glober Breakfast: Breakfast, dinner and accommodation are included in the cost of the program. 40K will make a selection of cereals, bread, juices and spreads available to all Globers for breakfast. 40K will also ensure that Globers have access to clean drinking water within the accommodation.

Morning session: Work on long term Individual/group projects:

40K aims to provide Globers with the opportunity to develop essential skills and experiences that can be transferred to the workplace. Globers will be able to collaborate with other team members to work on a long-term project.

Past projects that Globers have worked on include; making jewellery out of the dust coming from the granite quarry communities in which 40K works (pictured below), starting a new social business that rents out the tablets currently used in the 40K PLUS pods.

.

Afternoon Session: Working as a teacher’s aide in the 40K PLUS pods. 40K currently has 10 40K PLUS pods in operation in villages to the north of Bangalore. These children come for 2 hours daily to learn more about English, maths and technology through tablets. You will work in these classes giving the children the individual attention they need.

Free time and Dinner: Students will usually have free time on weekends and evenings. This gives Globers the opportunity to explore Bangalore at their will.

As the IT centre of the world, Bangalore is quickly becoming more and more developed and it therefore offers students the opportunity to meet people from many different cultures and backgrounds while discovering the many different areas of the city.

40K will provide Globers with a chef that will cook mostly traditional Indian food (nothing too spicy).

If students would like to eat out, they may do so at their own expense, however prices are usually quite inexpensive.

Being a reasonably cosmopolitan city, many different cuisines are available from traditional north and south Indian restaurants to Western and Asian alternatives.

As a primarily Hindu population, many people are vegetarians so there is a large selection of vegetarian, as well as non-vegetarian options.

40K encourages Globers to develop strong friendships and support bases so group dinners and outings are popular

.
