to learn new skills and, therefore, become more valuable.

Robinson said some staff mem-bers are very happy cutting grass and have no desire to be a heavy equipment operator. “They’ve been doing it for many years, but there would be no motivation to be capped out,” he said. “They don’t feel comfortable operating an excavator or a grader. They’re

very happy at what they do.”Argue asked if it would be ben-

eficial to create specific positions for certain skill sets, such as grader operator. “Rather than try to fit ev-erybody in this box, you add some positions and recognize that those positions require a little more of a skill set?” Argue asked.

Sayre asked how many equip-ment operators have left the district voluntarily, and staff said five.

Donlon said she was looking for a consensus to bring back to the board. The board will further consider the changes discussed at its May meeting.

On Saturday, April 13, ap-proximately 175 people from Wellington and the surrounding area participated in a candlelight vigil in front of the Wellington Professional Center on State Road 7, just north of Forest Hill Blvd.

The purpose of the vigil, which began at 7:30 and concluded at 9 p.m., was to pray for an end to abortion. It took place near Planned Parenthood’s Wellington Health Center, which has been located within the Wellington Professional Center building since 2012.

The event, which was part of a nationwide effort sponsored by #ProtestPP (www.protestpp.com), was hosted by a local group that prays at the same location every spring and fall. The vigil marked the final day of the Spring 2019 “40 Days for Life,” where people show up to pray one hour, once a week, during a 40-day period.

According to Valerie Mierzwa, the coordinator of the Wellington “40 Days for Life,” the response to the vigil from the community was more than triple the normal attendance, most likely, she said, to the recent showing of the movie Unplanned at local theaters.

“I think those who saw the movie were truly moved to their core to see what actually takes place inside of a Planned Parent-

hood, like the one in Wellington,” Mierzwa said.

Mierzwa urged anyone who is in crisis pregnancy and in search

of hope and help to contact Birth-line/Lifeline of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Palm Beach at (561) 738-2060.

Mi Tierra, Suzy Hammer as the Bookworm, crafts and more.

“We’re excited to be celebrating 50 years of providing free services that connect, enrich and inspire the community,” Library System Director Doug Crane said.

To celebrate its 50th anniver-sary, the library is hosting a year-long celebration with signature events, historical presentations and themed activities. For more info., visit www.pbclibrary.org.

SPORTS & RECREATION

By Gene NardiTown-Crier Staff Report

On Thursday, Dec. 27 and Fri-day, Dec. 28, the Seminole Ridge High School girls basketball team competed in the Rising Stars Ath-letics Holiday Tournament and made school history by winning the championship 61-38 against Palm Beach Central High School. Sixteen teams competed in two divisions, black and red.

Both teams entered the tourna-ment in the black division with high expectations — and deliv-ered by making it to the finals on day two. However, it was the Seminole Ridge that emerged vic-torious with the first-place trophy.

“It’s a great feeling. Seminole Ridge has come a long way,” second year coach Maria Hudson said. “We’re a very young team. They buy into the process. They always remain humble and coach-able, and we don’t take any team for granted.”

Both the Hawks (12-2) and the Broncos (8-4) ripped through their opponents to face each other in the finals.

The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the Broncos stayed toe-to-toe with the taller Seminole

Ridge squad. As the first period ticked down, Shelby Gard hit a three-point basket to close the margin to 13-10 for the Broncos. The Hawk squad, known for a stingy defense this season, dem-onstrated why the team has been dominant this year.

The Hawks held the Broncos scoreless for the remainder of the period and went on a seven-point run to close out the first quarter leading 20-10.

“We live and die by defense,” said Hawk freshman Aspen John-son, who played an integral role in ball distribution against the Bron-cos. “I just distribute the ball, and they knock down shots.”

Johnson believes that the team’s early success has changed the culture of girls basketball at the school. “It’s super important, because not only do you have a target on your back, but you actu-ally make a name for yourself,” she explained. “A lot of us are responsible for turning the tide.”

Once the Hawks secured half-time with a 33-22 lead, the team continued to pressure the Broncos defensively through the second half. The pressure proved difficult for Palm Beach Central to cut

into the Hawk lead. The Hawk offense was able to capitalize on the opportunities provided by their defense, and constant pressure led the Hawks to the 61-38 champion-ship win.

“It means a lot to the school and the program,” Hudson said. “I remember my first year coaching. I went to the scheduling meeting, and they said, ‘Who are you?’ I said, ‘Seminole Ridge,’ and I had a line of people who wanted to schedule us because they thought we were going to be an easy win.”

With a 12-2 record, many teams may regret assuming that the Seminole Ridge girls squad would be a guaranteed win. Last year, the Hawks finished 15-10 under Hudson, and this year, they are off to an even better start. Hudson attributes their success to hard work and the defensive mindset they focus on.

Top performers for the Hawks were Aneeshea Cason with 15 points, Jahnae Midget with 13 points and India Shepherd with 11 points.

For the Broncos, Yoslene Quiles totaled 12 points and doubled in three-point baskets, while Alaysha Iwais had 11 points.

Allen Boyd II

RPB’s Allen Boyd II Named NCCI’s 2019

United Way Chair

Morgan Temple remembers little about the moments after she was kicked in the face by a horse. What she will never forget is the lifesaving critical care she received from the Health Care District of Palm Beach County’s Trauma Hawk pilot and Palm Beach Coun-ty Fire-Rescue medical personnel who airlifted her to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

On Wednesday, July 24, an emotional Temple and her parents met with pilot Michael Sievers, and flight nurses James Hahn and Lynn Yoos, to thank them for helping to save her life.

“I think it’s extremely extraordi-nary, what these people do. It takes a very strong human being to be able to take care of people in the situation I was in,” said Temple, who lives in Ontario, Canada. “I’m very thankful that I was able to come back and give my thanks and see the helicopter and meet the crew. It has really been a cool experience.”

Temple’s life changed in an instant on Jan. 5. One of the horses

Emma LaPaglia is an adorable 8-year-old who recently com-pleted two-and-a-half years of treatment for leukemia.

On Friday, July 18, LaPaglia became the first patient to ring the newly installed end-of-treatment bell at the Pediatric Oncology Unit at the Palms West Children’s Hospital.

The bell was donated by the Kids Cancer Foundation so that all the young cancer patients can ring the bell as part of their end-of-treatment celebration.

LaPaglia rang the bell while her pediatric oncologist Dr. Melissa Singer and all her pediatric on-cology nurses sang, “Happy End of Treatment.”

After LaPaglia rang the bell loudly three times and was show-ered in “silly string,” she and her family enjoyed a celebration party with a cake and gifts for LaPaglia and her sisters.

The Palm Beach & Martin Counties Chapter of the Ameri-can Red Cross recognized Laurie Levene on July 23 for using Red Cross lifesaving skills to save her friend’s life.

On Jan. 6, Levene and some friends were enjoying dinner at Golden Corral in Royal Palm Beach when her female friend began to choke. While eating, Levene noticed that the woman’s airways were obstructed by food and asked her friend if she was OK.

After the friend was unable to respond verbally, Levene jumped into action and proceeded to perform abdominal thrusts. After several attempts, the food was expelled from her friend’s airways, which allowed her to breathe.

For her heroic and lifesaving action, Levene received the Red Cross Certificate of Merit in a cer-emony at the Red Cross Chapter office in West Palm Beach.

The Certificate of Merit is the highest award given by the Red

The National Council on Com-pensation Insurance (NCCI), the trusted source of information for the U.S. workers compensation system, recently announced the appointment of Allen Boyd II as its 2019 United Way Campaign chair. United Way is a signature program of NCCI’s charitable initiative NCCI Cares.

United Way improves lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance the common good. Last year, NCCI Cares raised more than $230,000 for the United Way of Palm Beach County, and this year, Boyd will build on that success with his own unique leadership philosophy: “See the need, serve the need.”

Boyd joined NCCI in 2016 and is currently its senior regulatory business analyst. Before joining NCCI, he aided Teach for America in its commitment to expanding educational opportunity by be-coming a high school teacher in Miami.

“There are many needs in our community, and there are many op-

she was grooming at an equestrian show in Wellington became ex-cited and kicked her in the face, leaving her with life-threatening injuries.

“She’s my warrior,” said Linda Temple, Morgan’s mother. “Thank you doesn’t seem enough to say to the Trauma Hawk staff but, from the bottom of this mom’s heart, thank you to everybody. You guys are great. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

After her recent second round of facial surgery, Temple asked to meet the flight team and ground crew who rescued her. For the Trauma Hawk pilot, the reunion was moving. “It’s great to meet her, and it’s great to see she’s doing well,” Sievers said. “Hopefully soon she’ll be back riding horses and taking care of them.”

Despite her ordeal, Temple looks forward to returning to her work caring for horses.

“Morgan’s gratitude was ex-tremely meaningful for the crew members involved,” said Gerald Pagano, director of aviation oper-

ations and the Trauma Hawk Aero-medical Program for the Health Care District. “Some of the crew said it was the first time they were able to meet someone they treat-

ed. Morgan is such a courageous young woman. To go through all that she did, and be willing to come back and say thanks, that was very special for us.”

Cross to individuals who save or sustain a life using skills learned in a Red Cross Training Services course.

“Laurie has been a dedicated Red Cross volunteer for most of her life,” Executive Director Jennifer Durrant said. “She has served as a member of the Palm Beach Disaster Action Team, the Disaster Public Affairs Team, the Volunteer Relations Team and the Emergency Response Vehicle Team. We are grateful for her sup-port and thrilled to recognize her with a lifesaving award.”

Levene is a longtime Red Cross volunteer trained in Red Cross Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED. In addition to her many roles at the Red Cross, she leads the Red Cross Disability Integration Team for the South Florida Region. She is known to be a passionate and kind-hearted person who embod-ies the lifesaving mission of the Red Cross.

Members of the public can go to www.lifesavingawards.org to

nominate and recognize an indi-vidual or group of individuals who have used the skills and knowledge

portunities to serve those needs,” Boyd said. “My hope is that all of us, meaning the entire enterprise, can come alongside of those who are in need by participating in our United Way campaign.”

Boyd is not new to serving and leading. The Ohio native serves as president of the board at his local church, Nuevo Comienzo, and is a board member of Palm Tran. He also acts as regional director of the Harvard Kennedy School Black Alumni Association. To learn more about NCCI’s United Way campaign, visit www.ncci.com.

At the celebration, LaPaglia was also presented with the final legacy bead, making her strand of legacy beads 28 feet long.

Pets Are Family, Too!

By Randall S. Dugal, D.V.M.

JUST A LITTLE NIP It is important to stay proactive with our pets’ health, which is why a yearly checkup is so vital. Even with a healthy checkup, a baseline will be established in case anything should change in the future. In the case of kidney disease in geriatric cats, your veterinarian may notice changes in the kidneys, a sour smell to the breath, weight loss, and even lack of grooming. The vet might ask you about their appetite, if sleep patterns have changed, or if there are any urination problems. They will also want to know if water consumption has changed. Fortunately, cats can be successfully treated for kidney disease, especially if caught early. This will help them enjoy healthy senior years. We all know that if we take better care of ourselves, we’ll most likely live longer, healthier lives. So we choose our healthcare providers carefully, change to a healthier diet, and exercise more. Shouldn’t we be doing the same for our geriatric pets to help them live healthy, long lives? We’ll do our part at COMMUNITY ANIMAL HOSPITAL OF ROYAL PALM BEACH by providing your pets with unsurpassed medical, surgical, and dental health services. We are conveniently located 1/4 mile east of Royal Palm Beach Blvd., at 11462 Okeechobee Blvd. Please call 798-5508 for appointments or emergencies. We’re OPEN SEVEN DAYS A WEEK.

P.S. If you find your cat is biting you aggressively too often, consult with your veterinarian. There could be a physical problem that needs addressing.
