2 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO
Graduation is a special time for students and their families and I always enjoy being part of the celebrations. Congratulations to all students graduating this April. Graduation is a celebration and acknowledgement of all the hard work you have done during your study years. I am delighted to be able to share this important moment with your friends and family and to recognise your academic success.
University is more than an academic experience, it is a time for developing independence, not only in your life, but in your thoughts, ideas and actions too.
I hope that your new qualifications give you the confidence to speak your minds, challenge the status quo and strive for change that benefits not just you, but the communities in which you live and work.
I hope too, that you will remember your university days fondly and I urge you to retain your links with the University of Waikato and take time to reconnect with fellow alumni as you make your way in the world.
Rt Hon James Bolger ONZ Chancellor University of Waikato
Graduation is a wonderful part of the tradition of universities, and one that I am pleased to uphold at the University of Waikato. Acknowledging scholarship and recognising student achievement is at the core of the mission of all universities.
Each institution has its own approach to recognising student achievement, introducing its own traditions that reflect local custom and circumstance. It is what makes each ceremony special and unique. The University of Waikato is no different, its graduation ceremony combining both elements that reflect the 800 years of tradition since the first universities were
established and elements that reflect its unique culture as an institution.
I welcome students, friends and family to graduation at the University of Waikato. I know many of you have travelled a long way to be here. For all graduates, I hope your experience today happily concludes what has no doubt been an eventful and fulfilling journey and that you take away fond memories of your time at the University of Waikato.
Professor Neil Quigley Vice-Chancellor University of Waikato
Welcome

Student speaker Fenna Beets Qualification to be conferred: Master of Science (Research)Growing up in Oxford, North Canterbury, Fenna has always been fascinated by the ocean and loved visiting Little Pigeon Bay to explore the rock pools. Her decision to study a Bachelor of Science was a no-brainer, and she was drawn to the University’s Tauranga campus for its proximity to the sea and Coastal Marine Field Station. She fell in love with learning marine science theory, while diving and doing field work to apply her learnings to real life. Quickly developing an interest in academia, Fenna moved on to Masters studies, focussing on the effects of climate change on marine sponges for her thesis. She scored a marine science ambassadorship to gain work experience on the Tangaroa, NIWA’s research vessel, through the Sir Peter Blake Trust. Fenna now works with fisheries for the Ministry for Primary Industries and volunteers for the Coastal Marine Field Station.

Student speaker Natasha FitzsimonsQualification to be conferred: Bachelor of Health, Sport and Human Performance Hockey champion Natasha Fitzsimons has always loved sport, choosing the University of Waikato for its practical courses and commitment to high performance athletes. While studying a Bachelor of Health, Sport and Human Performance, Natasha travelled the world playing hockey for the Black Sticks and the Midlands Women’s Team. With the Black Sticks squad, Natasha placed second in the Hockey World League last year, and won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Although balancing sport and study was a challenge, Natasha was able to apply her learnings in class to her skills on the hockey field, making her a better player. She was a Hillary scholar and a recipient of 2017 Sportswoman of the Year Blues Award. Natasha is now studying towards a Graduate Diploma of Teaching (Secondary) and enjoys passing her knowledge on to developing athletes.

Student speaker Hana-Te Kowhai Ohia Qualification to be conferred: Master of Management StudiesHana-Te Kowhai Ohia (Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngai te Rangi, Te Atiawa, Ngāti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine) grew up in a full-immersion Māori environment and attended high school at Ngā Taiātea Wharekura. Transitioning to a multi-cultural environment was a challenge, but she chose the University of Waikato for its inclusiveness and consideration for Māori culture. While studying her Bachelor of Management Studies and Master of Management Studies, Hana joined Te Ranga Ngaku, the Māori Business Student Network and Te Waiora o Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato, as well as representing the Waikato Students Union as VP Māori. Hana attended the University Scholars Leadership Symposium on Humanitarian Affairs in Vietnam in 2016 and was a speaker at the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education in Canada last year. Hana currently works in the Management Consulting practice at PwC in Wellington. She aims to work with indigenous communities on initiatives that focus on social, cultural and environmental issues.

40 THE UNIVERSITY OF WAIKATO
Ceremonial Traditions
Pou Whenua
Elements of university graduation ceremonies have evolved from the 12th century
when the first universities emerged in Europe.
The ceremonial carved Māori mace
being used in today’s graduation
ceremony represents the strong links
between the University and Māori.
The organisation of medieval universities was modelled on the established institutions of the day – the church, the monastery and the guild.
Latin was the language used by medieval scholars, and it is from Latin that the words ‘university’ and ‘degree’ are derived. The Latin term universitas means a guild or union, and universities started as a scholastic guild – a self-constituted community of teachers and scholars.
The word graduate comes from the Latin word gradus, which means step. Admission to study a bachelors degree was the first step taken towards completing a university education. The second step was to become a ‘master’. Masters were Master of Arts graduates whose degrees licensed them to teach. The Chancellor, an officer of the cathedral, originally granted teaching licences.
CEREMONIAL ROBES AND ACADEMIC DRESS
In the Middle Ages the corporate existence of universities was recognised and sanctioned by civil or ecclesiastical authority. The regalia worn by graduates and
In 1965, just a year after the University of Waikato was established, Kīngitanga head Korokī invited founding University of Waikato Chancellor and Hamilton Mayor Denis Rogers, along with 20 University of Waikato graduates, to Tūrangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia.
There he presented the fledgling institution with the carved taonga to be used as ceremonial mace. The piece was carved by master carver Piri Poutapu, who established a carving school at Tūrangawaewae in 1932. When not being used, the taonga sits in pride of place at the head of the University Council chamber.
university staff today reflect this mix of medieval governance. Robes worn by the Chancellor resemble those worn by the Lord Chancellor of England. Graduates and academic staff wear gowns similar to the dress of medieval clergy. Hoods are also fashioned on an everyday medieval garment, although the coloured lining was a later addition to indicate the wearer’s university and degree.

God Defend New Zealand
God of Nations at Thy feet
In the bonds of love we meet
Hear our voices we entreat
God defend our free land
Guard Pacific’s Triple Star
From the shafts of strife and war
Make her praises heard afar
God defend New Zealand
The University of Waikato
The University of Waikato’s motto is Ko Te Tangata – For the people. It’s an appropriate maxim for a university that was established when a group of people in the Waikato determined that the region should have its own university and reinforces our belief that people are central to the University and are its most valued resource.
In its first year, there were 181 enrolments. Today there are about 12,500 students, and 2,000 of them come from overseas. The University is committed to delivering a world-class education and research portfolio, and pursuing strong international links to advance knowledge. Staff endeavour to keep their teaching future-focused and play an active part in global research.
The University has had a presence in the Bay of Plenty for 20 years, and partners with Toi Ohomai, the polytechnic there to offer a range of
qualifications, and building has now started on a new tertiary campus in the Tauranga CBD.
THE CAMPUS
The Hamilton campus covers 65 hectares and is arguably the most attractive university campus in New Zealand, with gardens and grounds that attract a range of sports teams for practice and tournaments, and which provide a venue for many community activities.
In Hamilton there is an ongoing programme of building development and refurbishment. Plans are being developed for a new marae complex.
In Tauranga, work has begun on a new University-led campus in the CBD, scheduled to open in 2019. The development is on behalf of the Tertiary Education Partnership, involving the University, Toi Ohomai and Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi. The new campus will enable more students to study in the Bay and extend the range of qualifications and study options for students in the region.
EXPANDING HORIZONS
The University strives to ensure its teaching and research is relevant. We have also worked hard to ensure university study becomes accessible to a wider range of students.
To that end, we have extended Te Ara ki Angitū: Pathways to Excellence programme which brings students from outlying towns in the region to campus, offering fees scholarships and heavily subsidised daily transport to and from campus. The programme started in 2016 with 40 first-year students. This year, 123 new students began university study through the programme.
Our focus on our local communities is balanced by our commitment to a culture of internationalisation, which is measured through the diversity of our student and staff profiles, the support and celebration of that diversity, and a long-standing pride in our reputation for the pastoral care of our international students. At the same time, we are constantly reviewing curriculum, programme design and extending global networks and connections to expose our students to international influences.
EMPLOYABILITY PLUS PROGRAMME
In 2017, the University launched its Employability Plus Programme – an initiative that gives students the opportunity to gain work-ready skills through volunteer activity. Students are recognised for the extra work they do and will stand out when they are job hunting by having the practical skills and experience that employers are seeking.
