What is ESD?ESD – ElectroStatic Discharge is a spark, a micro-lightning bolt which passes from one charged conductive surface to another conductive surface. This incredible rapid transfer of what had heretofore been a static (unmoving) charge can cause fires, explosions, EMI, RF, heat, light and even sound waves. It is this unseen, unfelt, unheard micro lightning spark that must be controlled.

ESD Control Program

An ESD Control Program includes the following

points. By strictly complying with those points

ESD damage can be minimized.

– ESD training and instruction.

– Handle ESD sensitive (ESDS) products only in an ESD Protected Area (EPA).

– Keep all conductors (including persons) on the same potential.

– Remove all ”common” (charge generating) plastics from the EPA.

– Neutralize electrostatic charges on essential insulative materials by using ionization.

– Surround all ESDS with ESD safe packaging materials, except when they are being actively worked on.

Monitoring an ESD Control Program

Once an ESD Control Program has been implemented,

it is necessary to routinely monitor the program to make

sure every element is working properly.

A comprehensive ESD Control Program should include

the following equipment:

Static Locator or Static Field Meter:

To demonstrate electrostatic charges or to determine

whether electrostatic charges are present.

Wrist band, footwear/shoe grounder tester:

For testing wrist bands, grounding cords, footwear or

shoe grounders.

Surface Reistance Meter:

For testing worksurfaces, floor mats and flooring.

Charged Plate Monitor:

For testing ionization equipment.

Checklist for ESD Safe Handling

ESD evaluation

– Assign an ESD coordinator.

– Which components are ESDS (ElectroStatic Discharge Sensitive)?

– Where are ESDS products handled?

– Which processes can cause ESD?

– Where do ESDS products go to after leaving the plant?

– Quantify damage and loss due to ESD.

ESD protection

Optimal ESD protection can be achieved by a combination of:

– ESD training and instruction;

– ESD protective products;

– Frequent monitoring of the above.

ESD training and instruction

– Explain why ESD protection is necessary.

– Demonstrate the use of various ESD products.

– Adjust precautions to the practical working circumstances.

– Explain that ESD protection can generate a generous

return on investment.

EPA (ESD Protected Area)

– ESD safe worksurface.

– Wrist band with grounding cord.

– Identification EPA (caution sign).

Additional/optional:

– ESD safe floor, in combination with shoe grounders or ESD safe footwear.

– ESD safe chairs.

– ESD safe binders and document holders.

– ESD safe garments (gloves, coats, headwear).

– ESD safe tooling.

– ESD safe waste bins.

– Worksurface ionizers.

ESD protective packaging

– Checking of packaging of incoming goods.

– Packaging requirements of the product:

- product sensitivity

- electrical properties

- mechanical properties

- water vapour transmission rate (WVTR)

- single use or re-usability

The required frequency for checking the different ESD

provisions is dependent of factors such as usage, items

durability as well as the impact on the ESD Control

Program and consequently on ESDS.

IEC 61340-5-1 is listing the following packaging characteristics:

Electrostatic discharge shielding: a barrier or

enclosure that limits the passage of current and

attenuates the energy resulting from an electrostatic

discharge such that the maximum energy from 1.000 V

human body model discharge is 50 nJ.

Electrostatic conductive: packaging with a surface

resistance of ≥ 1 x 102 ohms and < 1 x 105 ohms.

Electrostatic dissipative: packaging with a surface

resistance of ≥ 1 x 105 ohms and < 1 x 1011 ohms.

Insulative: packaging with a surface resistance of ≥ 1 x

1011 ohms.

Low charging: packaging exhibiting properties

which minimize any charge. (The terms astatic and

antistatic should be avoided due to the different existing

meanings). Is not specified in IEC 61340-5-1.

ESD Symbols

The ESD susceptibility symbol

incorporates a reaching hand in a

triangle with a slash through it to

indicate that the item so marked is

susceptible to ESD damage and

should not be touched without ESD safe handling

controls.

The ESD protective symbol differs from the ESD

susceptibility symbol, by the addition of an arc around

the outside of the triangle and the omission of the slash

across the hand and the triangle. It should be used

to identify items that are specifically

designed to provide ESD protection,

such as for instance packaging.

Instead of the asterisk a letter

indicates the primary function of the

packaging material:

S = Electrostatic Discharge Shielding

D = Electrostatic Dissipative

L = Low Charging

C = Electrostatic Conductive

Products for the EPAAn ESD safe workstation protects ESDS products by safely draining damaging static

charges to ground. A wrist band connected with grounding cord prevents the operator

from charging. Parts placed on a dissipative mat safely decay their static charge to

ground. Both wrist band and worksurface mat should be grounded by a Common Point

Ground.

Stretch Wrist Bands

Our unique band material is manufactured using

a patented crochet process. This Crochet Band is

popular because it is comfortably soft and light, yet

durable and reliable. The band has total insulation on

the outside for maximum protection. The inside of the

band is lined with a special yarn that is coated in silver

to provide superior conductivity and is constructed to

“float” on the underside of the band to offer maximum

contact with the skin. All adjustable bands are made

to fit any size wrist. Buckles are made with static

dissipative nylon material.

– 3 mm stud with 360° swivel

– anti-allergic backplate

– Meet or exceed IEC 61340-5-1, MIL HDBK 263B, MIL STD 1686B and ANSI/ESD-S1.1-2006

Ergo Wrist Bands

All our metal bands are made of jewelry-grade

expandable stainless steel. The bands are insulated

with a triple-layer oven-baked coating, similar to that

used in the automobile industry. All models of metal

bands come with our patented “X-tenders” which

smartly-designed inter-connectable plastic links are

enabling the user to adjust or expand the strap to

any wrist size by using one or more of the 5 pieces

provided. This renders the metal band extremely

comfortable and eliminates the need to stock up on

different sizes.

– 3 mm stud with 360° swivel

– Easily adjustable from 130-170 mm using one or more of the five 10 mm nylon expansion links

– Meet or exceed IEC 61340-5-1, MIL HDBK 263B, MIL STD 1686B and ANSI/ESD-S1.1-2006

Dry Shielding Bags

The Surface Mount Technology has created

devices which are increasingly sensitive for the

damaging effects of moisture, corrosion and

ESD. Dry Shielding Bags protect against those

damaging influences. They meet or exceed

the most critical requirements of water vapour

transmission and ESD shielding and also offer

EMI protection.

The tough Dry Shielding Bags are heat sealable and are

suitable for vacuum and/or nitrogen flushed packaging.

They are ideal for packaging of SMDs in trays, tubes or

on tape and reel. The requirements for dry packaging

are described in EIA 583.

Permanent Dissipative PE

Permanent Dissipative PE is based on a novel

inherently dissipative polymer (IDP) that is

able to conduct ions. IPE is an abbreviation for

Ionomer Poly Electrolyte. This polymer can be

used to create plastics and plastic products with

permanent, immediate and humidity independent

dissipative and low charging properties

(antistatic).

The film has insulative middle layer and outer or both

surfaces are dissipative made with. Thickness of the

skin layers can be as thin as extrusion process allows.

With multi-layer blown film extrusion lines it is possible

to manufacture new type of cost effective, dissipative

films. With Permanent Dissipative PE functionality is

permanent, immediate and it works in low humidity

conditions.

Nefab can offer ready-made films for specific customer

needs. Barrier films (gas and vapor) with static

dissipative properties (ESD) are available. The maximum

film width is 2500 mm and thickness range is from 40

μm to 140 μm. EVOH and nylon layers can be used

to build special barrier properties. Films are processed

with top of the line 3-, 5- or 8-layer blown film extrusion

lines and proven manufacturing practices.

Advantages of Permanent Dissipative PE:

– true dissipative static decay properties vs. antistatic

– meets and exceeds IEC 61340-5-1 standard

– immediate functionality after processing

– permanent functionality

– works also on low humidity conditions < 20% RH

– uniform conductivity (no hot spots)

– non-corrosive

– non-migratory

– low ionic out-gassing

– RoHS confirming

– halogen free

– recyclable

– heat sealable

Membrane Boxes

Delicate objects can safely be packed in the

patented membrane boxes. Whether the objects

are round, pointed, oddly-shaped or of various

sizes, the membrane box is safe and protects

the objects against oxidation. The transparent

packaging makes easy visual checking possible.

A single membrane box consists of two halves. They

are made from polystyrene, fitted with a very thin

polyurethane membrane. The packaged items are

freely suspended between both membranes. Boxes

can be closed by hinges and clasps.

The electronic industry increasingly uses

Cleanroom flexible packaging in the manufacture

of wafers, chips, diskdrives and MR heads.

This packaging must be sealable, should hold

a vacuum and should act as a barrier against

outside threats.

One problem typically seen in the Cleanroom is the

generation of static charges through tribocharging, both

on the packaging film and the product being packed.

Static charges on the material can lead to electrostatic

attraction of particulate to the material and the product.

Therefore dissipative materials and/or ionization may be

required for product protection.

Available Cleanroom films as polyethylene and a

number of laminates such as Static Shielding and Dry

packaging barriers. Those films can be supplied as

tubing, sheeting, bags and shrouds.

Ionization EquipmentAir ionization complements and completes any program that intends to eliminate

all electrostatic charge sources. In many areas, such as Cleanrooms and mini

environments, air ionization is the only practical method of static control. Ionization can

neutralize static charges on insulative materials which cannot be grounded and can be

considered as the safety net for effective ESD Control.
