  • I-710 LONG LIFE PAVEMENT REHABILITATION PROJECTfrom just south of Firestone Boulevard to just south of Atlantic Boulevard

    EXTENDED WEEKEND CLOSURES:

    Approximately10ExtendedWeekendClosuresarescheduledbeginningFriday,August5,2011andcontinuingeachweekendthroughOctober. NoconstructionworkwilltakeplaceduringtheLaborDayholidayweekendofSeptember2-5.

    ExtendedWeekendClosuresbeginFridayat8p.m.whenCaltranswillcloseonelaneinbothdirectionsofI-710everyhouruntilmidnight, (12:01a.m.Saturday),atwhichtimetheFULLFREEWAYCLOSUREisineffect.Motoristswillbedirectedtousealternateroutes.

    WiththeFULLFREEWAYCLOSUREinplace,crewsworkthroughoutthenighttoinstallatemporarymoveablemedianbarriersystemandto re-stripethelaneswithintheclosurelimits.

    I-710willre-opentotrafficonSaturdaymorningat6a.m.Thetemporarymedianbarrierswillshiftallmotoriststoonesideofthefreeway. DuringeachExtendedWeekendClosure,twolaneswillbeavailablefornorthboundtrafficandthreelaneswillbeopenforsouthboundtraffic. Withareducednumberoflanesandwithareducedspeedlimitof45mph,motoristscancontinuetheircommutesonthissegmentofI-710until Sundayat11p.m.whenthefreewayfullyclosesagaintoremovethetemporarymedianbarrier.

    OnSundayat7p.m.,Caltransbeginstoset-upforthesecondFULLFREEWAYCLOSURE.Onelaneineachdirectionwillbeclosedeveryhour until11p.m.,atwhichtimethefullclosureisineffect.Thetemporarymedianbarrierisremovedandtheroadwayisre-stripedintimeforthe 6a.m.Mondaymorningcommute.

    TheExtendedWeekendClosureplanallowsforcontinuous53-hoursofconstructionworkonthepavementrehabilitationprojectwithminimal impactstotrafficflow.Thisplanexpeditestheconstructionproject,increasesthesafetyoftheworkcrewsandofthemotoringpublic,and minimizestheneedforweeknightlaneclosureswhentrafficvolumesarenormallyhigher.

    Areducedspeedlimitof45mphwillbepostedandenforcedwithintheconstructionzone. Oversizedloadsarenotpermittedduetonarrowerlanewidths. Motoristscanexpectdelaysandareadvisedtousealternateroutes. Detoursignswillbeposted.Over30PortableChangeableMessageSignswillbeinplaceonfreewaysandlocalstreetstodirectmotoristsaroundthe constructionzone.

    Scheduledclosuresareweather-permittingandaresubjecttochange.

    CaltransremindsmotoriststopleaseSlowfortheConeZoneandtoobeytheMoveOverLawthatrequiresmotoriststoslowdownortomove overonelaneawayfromflashingamberlightsonvehiclesbelongingtoconstructioncrews,emergencyrespondersortowtruckoperatorswho maybeworkingontheroadside.

    PROJECT DETAILS

    TheCaliforniaDepartmentofTransportation(Caltrans)isworkingtorehabilitatetheLongBeachFreeway(I-710)pavementinbothdirectionsfromjustsouthofFirestoneBoulevardtojustsouthofAtlanticBoulevardinthecommunitiesofBell,BellGardens,Cudahy,DowneyandSouthGate.

    Theimprovements,aspartoftheI-710LongLifePavementRehabilitationProject,willresultinlessfuturemaintenance,therebyminimizingtraf-ficdelays,costsandimpactsonsurroundingcommunitiesandtheenvironment.Theworkinvolvesrehabilitatingagingpavementandprovidingtheroadwaywithseveraldecadesofservicelife,improvedpavementperformanceandasmootherrideforthetravelingpublic.

    Forthepastdecade,theI-710LongLifePavementstrategyhasbeenconstructedinstages:thefirstphaseextendedfromthePacificCoastHigh-way(StateRoute1)totheSanDiegoFreeway(I-405)andcompletedin2003;Phase2stretchedfromI-405toI-105,andcompletedin2010.During2009toearly2011,Phase3continuedthepavementstrategyfromI-105toFirestoneBoulevard.

    NowinPhase4,Caltransiscontinuingsimilarworktoremovetheexistingpavementandreplaceitwithupto10inchesofLongLifeAsphaltConcrete.Thisworkrequirescrackingtheexistingconcretepavement,thenreusingitasastrongfoundationbase,followedwithanAsphaltConcrete(AC)overlay.Trafficmanagementequipmentsuchasfiberopticcables,wire-loopdetectorsembeddedinthepavement,andClosedCircuitTVwillbeinstalledtomonitortrafficandtoprovidetrafficdatatotheLosAngelesRegionalTransportationManagementCenter.Theprojectincludessafetyenhancementssuchasaheightenedconcretemedianbarriertoreduceheadlightglare,drainageimprovements,lightingupgrades,signilluminationsystems,on-rampandoff-rampimprovementsandothersafetyfeatures.

    FundingforthisprojectwasmadepossiblebytheAmericanRecoveryandReinvestmentActof2009(ARRA),andbyProposition1B,the2006voter-approvedstatetransportationbond.

    PROJECT STATUS:

    FromApriltoJuly,2011,extensiveworkonthedrainagesystemandutilitylinestookplaceintheshouldersbetweenFlorence

    AvenueandFirestoneBoulevard.

    Theconcretemedianbarrierinstallationiscomplete.

    AsofJuly2011,theprojectis30%complete.

    ThepavementrehabilitationworkoccurringJulythroughOctoberencompassesthemajorityoftheproject.

    BylateOctober2011,theprojectisexpectedtobe85%complete.

    ThissegmentoftheLongLifePavementRehabilitationProjectisexpectedtocompletebyspring,2012.
