In celebration of your birthday, I thought I could find a good gematria, a numerical equivalent, to honor your reaching middle age. 45 in Hebrew is mem-heh, which you might think is “meh,” and truth be told, the Hebrew word kacha (which means “so-so”) is also 45 in gematria. But have no fear! 45 is also the reverse, heh-mem, which means “them,” and that’s you: House of “them,” the people! But hem doesn’t feel sufficiently celebratory for this big moment. Any other gematrias we can find to describe you at 45? How about zachal? That means “larva.” Ok, maybe not. Or halva? That’s a little better: a delicious Israeli dessert. Unless you don’t like halva. Which I don’t. It tastes like powdered chocolate, infused with sesame and formed into a brick. I prefer my powdered chocolate in hot milk. How about me’od or b’gadol which mean “very” or “much” and “in large part” respectively. Now we’re getting somewhere. Both words imply something substantive, lasting and impactful. But neither works entirely on its own. Gadol is “big” or “great” a strong choice, but that’s 43 (which is in fact the age of your rabbi), but that’s without the bet (which counts for an extra 2). And me’od? In Bibical Hebrew you can sort of use me’od on its own, as in “the Hebrews [in Egypt] multiplied me’od me’od (very very).” The Biblical Hebrew dictionary Brown-Driver-Briggs translates me’od as “muchness.” But in modern Hebrew it doesn’t quite work. You can be tov me’od, “very good,” but me’od is just “very.” Very what? Which leaves us with what? Exactly. What? No, what’s not on second base.

Hey Beth Am, Mazel Tov! You’re turning 45 this month. That’s just two years older than your rabbi (which is good for him because he will always appear youthful by comparison).

BETH AM BOARD OF TRUSTEES

President’s MessageJonathan FishmanPresident

The first two weeks of November for me this year have been challenging, deeply moving and inspiring. The month began with a trip to Israel to participate in the Israel Ride from Jerusalem to Eilat. I rode with “Team Beth Am”: six Beth Am members (including Rabbi Burg who, among his many other talents, is an excellent cyclist) plus four friends of the synagogue. While this was probably my tenth trip to Israel, riding through the landscape on a bicycle was an entirely new experience. I always though of Israel as being such a small country – yet on our days riding through the Negev it seemed incredibly vast.

Our five day, 300 mile ride (plus a rest day on Shabbat in Mitzpe Ramon) from Jerusalem to Eilat was amazing. We experienced the different climatic regions of the State of Israel, from the hills and forests around Jerusalem to the hyper-arid desert of the lower Negev. We spent an evening at Kibbutz Keturah in the Arava learning about the incredible work at the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies. We had the opportunity to meet with groups of current students - my group included an Israeli and a young man from Gaza. It was amazing to hear his story of learning about the AIES and the personal risk he is taking by studying in Israel. Most importantly, these young people find the common human bonds that bind them, exclusive of politics and the conflict. These friendships last well beyond their time together at the AIES.

We returned from Israel in time for the memorable Hanukkat HaBayit re-dedication weekend at Beth Am. Three days of learning, music and worship gave us an opportunity to really show off the capabilities and flexibility of our renovated building. The bima extension forms a terrific stage for the Klei Kodesh service (and our rock star rabbi) and ample space for the large groups to come up for an aliyah. Everyone was mesmerized and intellectually challenged by the visiting scholar, Rabbi Shai Held. Friends, neighbors and representatives from the larger Jewish community in Baltimore joined us for the re-dedication on Sunday, culminating in the mezuzah placement by Mark and Patricia Joseph. Our renewed commitment to the City and investment in Reservoir Hill was featured in a front page article in the Sun the next day and another article in the Washington Post a day later!

Beth Am is on a roll. Along with our renewed building we have renewed energy and enthusiasm. While the broadly supported capital campaign has made this transformation possible, it is our Open Doors Annual Fund that enables us to realize the potential our improved space and welcome all who want to join our community in worship, learning, celebration, and tikkun olam.

Beth Am relies on the Open Doors Annual Fund to provide about one-third of the Synagogue’s operating budget. These resources support the Beth Am

Believe it or not, Beth Am turns 45 this month. (We don’t look a day over 30, right?) We have cleared out and spruced up, revitalizing our historic space, and feel truly blessed to be back home as we celebrate this milestone year. Now it is time to ensure that our always outstanding religious, social and educational programming can really thrive in our new digs with a timely donation to the Open Doors Annual Fund.

Have you ever sang along with Uncle Ira’s Washboard Ensemble at Klei Kodesh services? Did the Scholar-in-Residence pique your spiritual and intellectual curiosity? Remember the last time you enjoyed Kiddish lunch with friends and fellow congregants following services? You have the Open Doors Annual Fund to thank for all of these special experiences. The Open Doors Annual Fund makes up a third of our operating budget, so nearly every Beth Am event you attend is funded by this campaign. This year’s fundraising goal was set to take advantage of the exciting potential our renovated building offers to further engage families, friends and neighbors.

This Shabbat Hanukkah, as Beth Am marks four-and-a- -half decades, break out the balloons, sign the card, and send in your gift—there is no better way to join the celebration!

experience we all enjoy, from our haimish Shabbat services and Kiddush lunch to unusually robust educational and social programming for a congregation of our size. In keeping with our deepest traditions, your generous donations also keep the synagogue’s doors open to all regardless of means and allow us to welcome use of Beth Am facilities by neighborhood partners. You will be receiving communications about contributing to the 5780 Open Doors Annual Fund. Please help us keep our doors open wide!

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 1

Remember those two letters that stand for 45, mem-heh? Guess what? It’s not “meh.” It’s mah! Mah, of course, is “what.” And what better way to celebrate Beth Am than to ask a big question. What? What do we stand for? What will we learn this year? What are the next 45 years going to be like?

So, happy birthday to you Beth Am! May we continue to ask questions and may our curiosity about the things that matter inspire more good questions! But be patient. We don’t get to lamah (“why”) for another 30 years!

We look forward to another year of gathering together to assemble and deliver holiday packages for 36 of our Reservoir Hill neighbors in need. Each package will include a full holiday dinner with chicken, sides & fixings, cookies and homemade pumpkin bread.

In collaboration with Mazon, a Jewish Response to Hunger, participants will also have the opportunity learn about food scarcity and discuss how we can build relationships with our neighbors to advocate to reduce hunger and food scarcity in Baltimore City.
