Winter does seem long ago. Winter came
and went. And it was a tough one. Summer
has come and it has presented its challeng-
es. Rain has fallen, rain on rain, rain on rain.
But even the rain can’t dampen our spirits.
As I write this volunteers are busy putting the
finishing touches on the Indee July 4th
celebration. The river came up, stopped,
and now is receding. The fireworks will go on.
And no one does it better than Indee.
Through all of the seasons of life there is one
thing that stands out. The people. We got
through the winter together. The rain will not
ruin the 4th of July.
As you travel this summer you may go to see
places, but you go with people. People
matter. Whether they are the volunteers
who help with the 4th or our upcoming Rabrai
dinner. (Which we still need help with.)
Whether they are the friends and family
members we travel with or go to visit. It is
rare that we ever regret the time spent with
people we care about.
As you do your thing this summer I would
encourage you to embrace the wonderful
people God has placed in your life. This past
year has taught me how important that is.
Making time for that visit, that phone call,
that thank you card is always time well spent.
Like the weather, our life has seasons.
But in every season thank God for the people.
In the bleak midwinter they are the warm
sunshine. On the hot summer day they are
the refreshing breeze. They give glorious
color to our falls and hope in our springs.
While there are folks who do this for us, we
would be remiss not to consider how we are
all of that for others. In life it’s not about
what you get, it’s about what you give away.
You can be the sunshine, the cool breeze, the
brilliant colors, and the source of hope in the
life of another person. Each of us has
something to give.
Friends, enjoy the summer. It will pass all
too quickly. Embrace and be embraced by
the people God has placed in your life. Some
day you will look back and the precious
memories you are creating will bring a smile
to your face. It will bring a smile to God’s
face as well.
Jesus said, “I have come that they may have
life, and have it to the full.”
May it be so with you.
Pastor John
In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Have you ever been a part of a group that just makes you proud to associate with that type of person. That
is how I always feel each year after the Relay For Life event is over and the tallies are in. This year is no
different. Thirteen individuals donated their time and efforts to raise monies for cancer research by joining
the Presbyterian Walkers Team. Six were a part of our church family, the other seven were community
members who have been a part of our team because they know how cancer can change lives. These 13
team members raised an amazing $5,451.67, which was the second highest team amount raised this
year, to be used in cancer research.
This year’s team members were Lynda Fiester, Judy Gaffney, Eloise Geater, Andrea Houston, Mary McGill,
Carole Mumm, Margaret Ownby, Judy Wenger, Justine Wenger, Kathy Wilson, Kent Wilson, Ellie Wymore,
Frank Sauer and team captain, Donald Mumm. Thank you to each for your participation. We joined 22
other teams in Buchanan County, who together raised over $54,000, and 4 million other individuals from
20 different countries in the fight against cancer.
I think everyone knows how personal this is to me. There is no doubt in my mind that because of all of this
research, many of us will beat what is one of the scariest diseases to be told you have.
Celebrate, all who have won their fight and are a survivor.
Remember, all of our family and friends who could not win their fight.
Fight Back, which is what we do every year with our fundraising efforts.
Once again, Thank you to all of our team members, and everyone who donated dollars to help in a fight
that somehow we have to win. Whatever it takes, we are willing to go that extra mile!
Donald Mumm, Presbyterian Walkers Team Captain.

THE BIRTH OF MOTHER’S DAY - Have you ever wondered how Mother’s Day came about?
Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) loved her mother dearly. It was Miss Jarvis who first suggested a national day to honor all
mothers. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Anna gave a carnation, her mother’s favorite flower,
to each person in attendance. Within a few years, the idea to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mother’s Day
was soon observed annually in many large cities of the United States.
On May 9, 1914, by an act of congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as Mother’s
Day. He established the day as a time for “public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our
country.” By then, it had become customary to wear white carnations in honor of departed mothers and red
carnations to honor the living. The custom continues to this day.
