Modal Verbs: should, must, may, can (advice, warning, possibility)

Modais (também chamados de verbos auxiliares modais, auxiliares modais) são verbos especiais que se comportam de forma irregular em Inglês.

Eles são diferentes de verbos normais, como "trabalhar, jogar, visitar ...”. São utilizados para indicar modalidade. Dão informações adicionais sobre a função do verbo principal que os segue e têm uma grande variedade de funções comunicativas.

O que são verbos modais?

Apresentam as seguintes características comuns:

1. são seguidos do verbo principal no infinitivo sem o to;2. não têm formas de particípio ou infinitivo. Se preciso, são substituídos por expressões verbais de sentido equivalente;3. não levam “s” na 3a pessoa do singular do presente. Portanto, a mesma forma é usada para todas as pessoas;4. formam a interrogativa e a negativa da mesma forma que o verbo to be.

São verbos modais: can (pode), could (poderia), may (pode, poderia), might (pode, poderia), should (deveria), must (deve).


VERBO“CAN”


Can: pode ser usado para expressar permissão, habilidade. 1) Para expressar habilidade física ou mental.Ex: He can speak Japanese. (Ele sabe falar japonês). –habilidade mental We can play soccer. (Nós sabemos jogar futebol) – habilidade física 2) Para pedir ou dar permissão de maneira informal.Ex: Can I come in? (Eu posso entrar?) You can have lunch in my house today. (Você pode almoçar em minha casa hoje.)

I - Rewrite the sentences. Use “CAN” for ability.

1. He’s able to drive a car.

2. My daughter is capable of playing the piano beautifully.

3. She’s an excellent secretary. She has the ability to type 80 words a minute.

He can drive a car.

My daughter can play the piano beautifully.

She can type 80 words a minute.

VERBO“COULD”


Could: é empregado para expressar habilidade, só que no passado. É usado também com o sentindo de poderia, em um contexto mais formal.

I could ride a bike when I was 5 years old. (Eu podia/ conseguia andar de bicicleta quando tinha 5 anos de idade).

Could you bring me a sandwich and a coke, please? (Você poderia me trazer um sanduíche e uma coca, por favor?).


VERBO“MAY”


May: é usado para expressar uma possibilidade no presente ou no futuro. Também pode ser usado para pedir permissão, no entanto, may é usado em contextos mais formais que o can.

It may rain tomorrow. (Pode chover amanhã).

May I go to the bathroom? (Eu poderia ir ao banheiro?).

II - Rewrite the sentences. Use “MAY” or “CAN” for possibility.

1. Due to the repairs, trains are possibly subject to delays.

2. It’s possible that we face an energy crisis this winter.

3. Maybe we’ll change rooms for the next test since the room is very small.

Due to the repairs, trains may be subject to delays.

We may face an energy crisis this winter.

We may change rooms for the next test since the room ...


III - Rewrite the sentences. Use “MAY” or “CAN” for permission.

1. He has permission to play after doing his homework.

2. You’re allowed to miss classes if you get 85% on the first test.

3. Do I have permission to smoke?

He may play after doing his homework.

You may miss classes if you get 85% on the first test.

May I smoke?



VERBO“MIGHT”


Might: é usado para expressar possibilidades no passado ou no presente.

She might have come to the party. (Ela poderia ter vindo à festa).

It might be true. (Pode ser verdade.)

He might have lunch with us tomorrow. (Ele pode vir almoçar com a gente amanhã).


VERBO“SHOULD”


Should e ought to: são usados para expressar um conselho.

You should go to the doctor. (Você deveria ir ao médico).

You ought to quit smoking. (Você deveria parar de fumar).

IV - Rewrite the sentences. Use “SHOULD” for what is probable or expected.

1. They expect the meeting to be finishing right now.

2. The Conservatives are expected to win the next election.

3. We don’t expect that it will take long to get there.

The meeting should be finishing right now.

The Conservatives should win the next election.

It shouldn’t take (us) long to get there.



VERBO“MUST”


Must: é usado para expressar obrigação.

You must go to school. (Você deve ir à escola).

She must study more. (Ela deve estudar mais).

V - Rewrite the sentences. Use “MUST” for obligation.

1. There’s no gravity in space. Astronauts have to take showers inside big plastic bags.

2. Astronauts are also obliged to drink through tubes.

3. It’s compulsory that students write the test in ink.

Astronauts must take showers inside plastic bags.

Astronauts must also drink through tubes.

Students must write the test in ink.
