June 23, 2010My term as SCCA President officially be-gan on June 12, 2010, when the Executive Board held its annual Transition Meeting at Midlands Technical College-Northeast campus. I am honored to serve and promise to work my hardest throughout the com-ing year to hear the voices and concerns of South Carolina Counselors and to advo-cate on their behalf. I also feel privileged

to work among some of the most dedicated and conscientious counselors in South Carolina, many of whom have provided decades of service to our organization. It takes many hands and hearts to continue an organization with over 1000 members and I can attest that the heart of SCCA is beating strongly.

My goals for the coming year include:

1. Improving communication to and among SCCA members

2. Educating membership about the role and function of the Executive Board

3. Expanding membership of SCCA by five percent

4. Reintroducing the SCCA Journal as an online publication

5. Maintaining the financial stability of our organization

One issue that I have identified during my years of involvement with SCCA is that, notwithstanding our informative website and quarterly newsletters, our organization could benefit from another means of facilitating communication with and among members. In addition, members have also expressed some con-fusion about what SCCA and the SCCA Executive Board do.

To address these two concerns, the Executive Board decided at the Transition meeting to begin developing a Facebook page to which all members could join. When the page is ready, you will receive an email asking you to “become a friend” (join the group). I hope that you will join, as I will be sending regular updates to explain more clearly what we do and to solicit your feedback about what we can do better. Sometimes when emails are sent to school email addresses, they bounce back due to security systems. If this happens, please go to our website at www.sccounselor.org and look for the Facebook icon to join. Our plan is to have the page finished by the end of August.

I appreciate your continuing membership in SCCA and believe it is important for each state to have a unified voice to articu-late and represent counselor concerns. SCCA is one of the 56 chartered branches of the American Counseling Association, which includes branches in almost every state in the U.S., as well as some in Europe and Latin America. We all benefit when a common voice promotes the growth of the counseling pro-fession and those whom we serve. Unfortunately, Georgia, my home state, lacks a state branch and this unified voice is absent. This situation prompted me to become involved with and dedi-cate myself to SCCA.

I look forward to working with you this year to accomplish our shared goals. Please let me hear from you.

With warm regards,

Mary JaneMary Jane Anderson-Wiley, Ph.D. [email protected]

Greetings from the SCCA President

Multicultural Division Reorganization MeetingThe Multicultural Division of the South Carolina Counseling and Development Association met October 2, 2009, for the purpose of reorganizing. The new officers are: Gwendolyn LC Snider, President; Pamela Morton, President-Elect; and Marcellus Holt, Secretary.

The members present agreed to sponsor a workshop and a dance at the SCCA Conference February 3–5, 2011, Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

We are looking for old members of MCD to reactivate their membership and we want new members to join us. We are excited and have made plans to have a viable organization.

I will announce a meeting date in a few weeks via the South Carolina Counseling and Development Association Yahoo account. If you have suggestions, comments and/or questions please email me: [email protected].

The momentum to continue providing a great and educational conference con-tinues to build. Each year the conference continues to provide a great venue to learn new information about the counsel-ing field, make new contacts with other professionals and to catch up with friends from throughout the state. The conference committee has been working hard to keep up this tradition and hopes that you will

enjoy the upcoming 2011 SCCA annual conference. The confer-ence will again be held at the Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The dates of the conference are February 3–5, 2011. We are working on having the ACA

president present along with a great keynote speaker presenta-tion. This year’s theme is South Carolina Counselors: Agents of Change. With our ever-changing economy and health care, counselors will play an even more vital role in being agents of change within South Carolina. We are also excited to be able to reduce the student registration fee for current students to hope-fully attract the next generation of counselors to the South Caro-lina Counseling Association. We will be continuing to update the SCCA web page (www.sccounselor.org) with more exciting information about the conference, so please stay tuned!

Take care,

David Scott, Ph.D., LPC, CDFI SCCA President-Elect
