The best dining experience is one spent with friends. The oversized dining area can entertain an intimate gathering or accom-modate a group of 20 or more guests. The floor to ceiling windows provide an abun-dance of natural light and allow for views of the hillside and pool.

Whether one chooses to rebuild or to renovate, the innovative design of 470 Castle Place is timeless. Architects to-day still try to emulate and recapture the feel by designing open spaces with eve-ry room leading to the outdoors.

1960’s Lifestyle: Today

Driving along the wide, leafy streets of Beverly Hills’ Trousdale Es-tates is reminiscent of the days before McMansions, traffic and gated communities. The exclusive enclave of mostly single-story, modern houses evokes the prototypical image of SoCal’s “good life”—cocktails by the pool while Sinatra (who lived there for a time) plays in the background. “It’s a beautiful encapsulation of a moment in time,” says Brad Dunning, an interior designer who has remodeled a handful of residences in the neighborhood. While the area has always appealed to a certain monied set—producers, doctors, titans of industry—it has recently seen an in-flux of artists, actors and style-setters jonesing for floor-to-ceiling windows and magnificent city views, as well as a penchant for din-ing at nearby hotspots like Soho House and BOA. Paul Trousdale, who bought the land from the Doheny family in 1954, developed the 410-acre community for luxury housing in the 1950s and ’60s. Tucked behind Greystone Mansion, the hillside cluster of custom-built houses north of Sunset—bounded by Do-heny, Schuyler and Hillcrest roads—attracted Hollywood’s earliest boldface names. Groucho Marx, Dinah Shore, Barbara Stanwyck and Danny Thomas all called Trousdale home. Even Richard Nix-on lived there while running for governor of California. But what’s drawing recent buyers like former Dior Homme creative director Hedi Slimane and celeb photog Matthew Rolston is the architecture. The leafy hills are full of flat-roofed pads with rock facades and generous carports, and its list of architects reads like a who’s who of midcentury design. -an excerpt from ModernLuxury by Melissa Gluck
