Dear Lacamas Families, March 2019
March came in like a lion with our snow and unpredictable weather, but I am hopeful that it will go out like a lamb! As we start the month of March and head toward spring, Lacamas has several fun activities heading our way: PALS “Dancing through the Decades”, Kids Heart Challenge, Arts Ambassador Dance Workshop and several fun grade level events! Our Lacamas students have been busy and we are excited to start heading towards our spring months!
At Lacamas, we have such amazing, supportive families! Our PALS board and members, classroom volunteers, those who join us for assemblies and our special activities and events. We thank you so much for sharing in our kids’ lives here at Lacamas!
A couple months ago, I put out a request to our community to consider volunteering in a unique way with “Share what you Love”! We had some volunteers step up and give their time, sharing with our kids their love of gardening, drawing, friendship and playing! Let me introduce you to some special volunteers!

Lacamas is: Respectful, Responsible, Safe and Kind!
Meet Ms. Merl! Merl volunteers weekly for our Garden Club kids and backpack program. She brings special projects and experience for kids including: samples of winter blooming trees, making an animal habitat and growing starts for our garden area to plant this spring!
Meet Ms. Marnie! Ms. Marnie volunteers every week to run a 3rd grade girls group. They share time eating lunch together and learning more about friendship. They have fun reading stories, doing crafts and sharing friendship!
Meet Officer Scott! Officer Scott volunteered weekly during the month of February. He spent time being with kids during their lunch block! He had fun eating with groups and playing with kids at basketball and the Space Ball!
Meet Mr. Mueller! Mr. Mueller volunteered weekly during the month of December. He shared his love of drawing with a Drawing Club. He showed kids drawing techniques and walked them through how to draw some favorite characters like Snoopy and Olaf! We have several talented drawers at Lacamas!
Do you knit, sew, play chess, bake, do yoga, play guitar, sing, do art or love reading…? What might you share with kids that encourages a possible new interest? If you are inspired and
would be willing to give some time, again I invite you to “Share what you Love”! Let me know if you are interested, we’ll complete all volunteer forms, get you signed up and making a difference for kids in our school community!

PALS is looking for someone to fill the Assistant Literacy Chair position. This individual would work together with the Literacy
Chair person for the remainder of the school year and then take over the Literacy Chair position next school year. Below is a description of what is involved in the position(s).
Assistant Literacy Chair (Needed now)This is an assistant position with the current Literacy Chair, in which you will learn how the existing literacy activities are handled, including coordination of the Scholastic Book Fairs. The position will then become the Literacy Chair.
Literacy Chair (Position would start next school year)Oversees all literacy activities including the coordination of the Scholastic Book Fairs. Book Fairs are run in the Fall and Spring to provide students, teachers, and parents with the opportunity to purchase Scholastic books. Literacy Chair works with the book supplier, coordinates dates with the school, and recruits volunteers to assist with operation of fairs with at least one evening book fair open to the public.
If you are interested, or would like more information, please email PALS at: [email protected]
Thank you for your consideration in this position!
MARCH is NATIONAL
MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOLS MONTH
(MIOSM)
How do YOU do Music?
Dear Families,
In celebration of March as national “Music In Our Schools Month,” this article will help you understand the elements of music, its relation to other subjects and the benefits to your child! I am blessed to get to teach music to your children…you are always welcome to stop in and experience music class with your child! We love visitors!
Musically,
Shelley LaValley
Why Teach/Learn Music?
MUSIC IS A SCIENCE It is exact, specific, and it demands exact acoustics. A conductor’s score is a chart, a graph which indicates frequencies, intensities, volume changes, melody and harmony all at once and with the most exact control of time.
MUSIC IS MATHEMATICAL It is rhythmically based on the subdivision of time into fractions which must be done instantaneously, not worked out on paper.
MUSIC IS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE Most of the terms are in Italian, German, or French and the notation is certainly not English, but a highly developed kind of shorthand that uses symbols to represent ideas. The semantics of music is the most complete and universal language.
MUSIC IS HISTORY Music usually reflects the environment and times of its creation, as well as special historical events.
MUSIC IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION It requires fantastic coordination of fingers, hands, arms, lip, cheek and facial muscles, in addition to extraordinary control of the diaphragm, back, stomach, and chest muscles which respond instantly to the sound the ear hears and the mind interprets.
MUSIC IS ALL THESE THINGS, BUT MOST OF ALL,
MUSIC IS ART It allows a human being to take all these difficult techniques and use them to create, experience, and express feeling and emotion.
We Teach/Learn Music So you will recognize beauty. So you will be sensitive. So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world.
So you will have more love, more compassion, more gentleness and more connection to others.
Please help celebrate “MISOM” by sharing some of your favorite music with your child today!
Thank you for supporting your child’s music education!

Jungle Continues At Lacamas Lake
March 25th – 29th Lacamas gym will be transformed into the Jungle. The Jungle is a large obstacle course with many pieces that can not be moved each day. This is a school wide event to encourage students to showcase their PE experiences. Students are encouraged to help personalize the Jungle by bringing ONE stuffed animal with their name taped on it to school on Thursday, March 21st or Friday, March 22nd. Parent volunteers are needed on Friday, March 22nd to set up the Jungle after school and on Friday, March 29th to clean up after school. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Moran at ext. 78453. Another tradition continues, as during our Jungle all kids who raised over $50 for the American Heart Association will be invited to play during one lunch recess as my way of saying thank you! I would like to invite the family to come watch this action since you helped earn the reward. March 25th will be the 4 & 5 grades, March 26th will be the kindergarten and 1st graders, and March 28th I will host the 2nd and 3rd graders during their normal lunch
recess times as they play in the Jungle! Hope you can join the fun!
Just a reminder, envelopes for the Kids Heart Challenge are dueFriday, March 15th
Thank you!

their dedication to Lacamas Lake Elementary.
For the month of February, we would like to recognize and thank:
Stephanie Holderman
Thank you to all who volunteer time and energy to help make Lacamas a wonderful place for
children to learn and grow.
A great big thank you to all of students, parents, teachers & staff who submitted Box Tops! February’s Box Top Drive was a big success bringing in 3,002 Tops for a grand total of $302.
This brings our yearly total to $797! It was a race to the finish with a very close ending and the winning class contributed 592 Box
Tops. Congratulations Mrs. Schaeffer’s class a prize is coming your way!
We are very close to our end of the year goal of $1000. There is still time to work together to meet this school years goal! This can be accomplished by downloading the Bonus Box Top App on smart devices, buying items with Box Tops & scanning grocery receipts for instant online Box
Top submissions.
Please continue to collect Box Tops as there will be another drive in May with a prize for the top earning class! As there are only two submissions dates Nov. 1st & March 1st available to send
in our Tops to Box Tops for Education our May collection will be mailed in the fall & count towards next years total.
