MEANS FOR ELECTROPHORESIS

Mitsuru Sugihara, Masashi Ogawa, Asaka, Japan assigned to Fuji Photo Film Co Ltd

A means for electrophoresis suitably em- ployable for analysis of biopolymers such as pro- teins, as well as for determination of base sequence of DNA, RNA, their fragments, and their derivatives is disclosed. The means com- prises a membrane of an aqueous poly- acrylamide gel for electrophoresis which is sandwiched between a plane support and a plane covering sheet. The membrane has a thickness gradient in its electrophoresis direction.

METHOD FOR PURIFYING REACTION SOLUTION OBTAINED BY USING

MICROBIAL CELL, IMMOBILIZED MICROBIAL

CELL, OR IMMOBILIZED ENZYME

Ashina Yoshiro, Yasumas Yamaguchi, Masashi Nishida, Toshiaki Doi, Kanagawa, Japan as- signed to Nitto Chemical Industry Co Ltd

A method for purifying a reaction solution ob- tained by using a microbial cell, an immobilized microbial cell, or an immobilized enzyme as a catalyst in a water medium is disclosed. The method comprises repeatedly filtering the reac- tion solution to remove fine solid matter using a polyethylene porous hollow fiber membrane having a bubble point of from 1 to 20 kg/cm2, and repeatedly washing the hollow fiber mem- brane before it has been clogged to such an ex- tent that a differential pressure thereof exceeds 3 kg/cm2. By this method, a filter membrane can be repeatedly regenerated at high efficiency and can stably be used for a long period of time.

ASSAYING TOTAL IGE LEVELS WITH FLUOROGENIC ENZYME

LABELED ANTIBODY

Emanue Calenoff, Tsay Yuh-Geng, Ruth M Jones, John R Scott assigned to Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company

A method for identifying and quantifying total IgE levels in patient serum by conjugating the IgE in the serum with anti-IgE antibody ad- hering to an insoluble support, conjugating the serum IgE with an enzyme labeled anti-IgE anti- body, contacting the enzyme label with a solu- tion of a substrate which will yield a fluorescent product in the presence of the enzyme, and measuring the level of fluoresence in the solu- tion. Special reagents and their manufacture are also disclosed.

ASSAY SYSTEMS FOR DETECTING CELL-FREE T CELL ANTIGEN RECEPTOR RELATED

MOLECULES AND THE CLINICAL UTILITIES OF THE

ASSAYS

Patrick C Kung, Michael Brown, Stephen H Ip assigned to T Cell Sciences Inc

Methods are provided for detecting and deter- mining the amount in a sample of an antigenic determinant from an antigen receptor derived and released from a T cell or NK cell. Methods are also provided for detecting and determining the amount in a sample of an antigenic deter- minant from a complex of at least a portion of an antigen receptor derived from and released from a T cell or NK cell and a protein complex. These methods form the bases for methods of dia- gnosing and monitoring in a subject a disease characterized by the presence or an amount dif- ferent from a normal subject of one of these anti- genie determinants in a body fluid. A soluble antigen receptor or complex thereof derived from a T cell or a NK cell but free of such T cell or NK cell is also provided.

COMPOSITION FOR LIPASE ASSAY

Shigeyuk Imamura, Hideo Misaki, Shizuoka, Japan assigned to Toyo Jozo Kabushiki Kaisha

A composition and method for lipase assay, comprising the use. of an aqueous solution of a I,2-diglyceride of a higher fatty acid, and a non- ionic surface active agent. The higher fatty acid is a higher fatty acid of 8 or more and preferably 12 or more carbons, most preferably a higher unsaturated fatty acid of more than 16 carbons. The concentration of 1,2-diglyceride is more than 0.5 g per liter of solution. The nonionic sur- face active agent is a polyoxyethylene-type non- ionic surface active agent, a polyhydric-alcohol- type nonionic surface active agent or a block- polymer-type nonionic surface active agent, whose concentration is more than 0.1% by weight in the composition and which has an HLB more than 10. The composition preferably contains 0.5-10 g of 1,2-diglyceride and IO-50 g of nonionic surface active agent per liter of solu- tion

METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF

SARCOSINE CREATINE OR CREATININE

Ulrich Mayr, Hans Mollering, Joachim Siedel, Hans Seidel, Rosenheim, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Boehringer Mannheim GmbH

The present invention provides a method of use for a hydrogen peroxide-forming oxidase, wherein the enzyme is obtained from Streptomy- cetaceae and at 25 degrees C., in 0.15 mol/liter potassium phosphate (pH 7.9), in the presence of surface-active substances, still shows after 2 days an activity of at least 40% of the initial activity. This enzyme is useful in the determination of sar- cosine, creatine and creatinine.

PROCESS FOR THE ISOLATION AND PURIFICATION OF ALPHA-

INTERFERONS

Rainer Obermeier, Hattersheim am Main, Federal Republic Of Germany assigned to Hoechst Aktiengesellschaft

The invention relates to a process for the isola- tion and purification of alpha-interferons by (a) dissolution of the interferon-containing crude product in guandine. HCl solution and pre- cipitation by dilution with water and/or (b) by chromatography on an HIC column under renaturing conditions.

An apparatus for maintaining a biological sam- ple on a support is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a hollow chamber with internal and external surfaces and a first and second end. The first and is open and is adapted for attachment to the first closure means. The second end is either closed or open. If open, the second end is adap- ted for attachment to a second closure means. The apparatus provides means for maintaining the support in contact with a liquid medium at all times regardless of the orientation of the ap- paratus. In a preferred embodiment, the ap- paratus provides means for maintaining the original orientation of a non-integral support regardless of the orientation of the apparatus. The apparatus is useful for isolating and cul- turing microorganisms.
