ig. 2 Did you know that there are more than 30 Eiel Tower replicas around the world withdierent heights?Well, this one is deinitely unique: Our miniature Eiel Tower with a total height o 1 mmwas 3D printed using the Photonic Proessional GT combined with DiLL technology.

continued rom page 1 The bene-fts o DiLL can also be used in com-

bination with the new PhotonicProessional GT (fg. 1) systems toprovide a ast and easy 3D printingprocess or the rapid prototyping olarge structures within reasonabletime. The miniature Eiel Tower(fg. 2) serves as a perect demon-stration o the superior resolutionprovided by the DiLL assisted 3Dprinting process. A total height oone millimeter allows to see this struc-ture with the bare eye, as the photo-

graph taken with a consumer DSLRand a macro objective documents.Only the SEM image o the verysame structure (fg. 2 (b)) revealsthe fne details and proves thehigh resolution o the process. ThePhotonic Proessional GT systemsprovide the speed-up o the printingprocess to fnish such structures inabout two hours total printing time. While there is obviously little use othis miniature model besides demon-

stration purposes, the benefts othe DiLL and GT combination providethe basis or a large range o applica-tions where sub-millimeter miniatureparts and elements with a sub-micronresolution are needed.A prototype o a miniature nozzle orthe precise ormation o liquid micro-droplets was as well abricated usingthe DiLL and GTcombination (page 1).

NanoWrite is the graphical user inter-ace or controlling and monitoring all

aspects o our Photonic Proessionallaser lithography systems. In earlyJune, we released NanoWrite 1.7 to ourcustomers.

The most prominent new eaturein this upgrade is the PerectShapeexposure mode which increases aver-age writing speeds and simplifes thewriting process. During exposure, thephoto-sensitive sample is moved rela-tive to the laser ocus by a high-reso-

lution three-axis piezo stage. Due toNewtons Third Law, the inertia o themoving mass and the maximum orcethat can be generated by the piezoactors limit the minimum radius ocurvature o the motion trajectory at agiven speed.

In previous versions, NanoWrite drovethe piezo stage at constant speed andthe operator had to determine theappropriate speed or achieving sharp

corners through experimentation. InNanoWrite 1.7, PerectShape calculatesthe optimum velocity profle based ona physical model o the piezo stage.During exposure, it uses lower speedsto traverse corners and higher speedsor straight segments o the trajectory. In addition, NanoWrite dynamicallyadapts the laser power to the currentspeed in order to maintain a constantwidth o exposed lines.

Ater PerectShape has completed itsully automated calibration routine, the system operator only has to setthe laser power or a certain reer-ence speed. Selecting one o the pre-defned PerectShape confgurationsthen determines the inevitable trade-o between speed and accuracy. It isno longer necessary to determine theappropriate scanning speed or a giventrajectory by experimentation. There-ore, PerectShape simplifes the whole

writing process and in many cases sig-nifcantly reduces the writing time, allvia a sotware-only upgrade and nourther investments in hardware.

    NanoWrite 1.7PerfectShape increases writing speed

Besides the new PerectShape imple-mentation, NanoWrite 1.7 alsoimproves the loading time or largeand complex input fles. We added

confguration options or fne-tuningthe autoocus system or speed andaccuracy. The WriteText command isnow capable o including values oGWL variables in the output, makingit much easier to properly label yourwritten structures, especially whenconducting loop-based parametersweeps. Finally, we added a one-click

NanoWrite 1.7 includes the new PerectShape eature which increases the average writingspeed and simplifes the writing process.

Optically Actuated Micro-MachinesPublication of the University of Bristol

(David Phillips) Nano-scale topo-graphy can be imaged by raster scan-

ning a sharp tip over a substrate, andmeasuring its deection as it glidesover surace eatures. When imagingbiological samples in this way, it iscrucial to avoid any disruption to thesurace by minimising contact orces.

In this work [1] we use the PhotonicProessional direct laser writingsystem to abricate probes that can becontrolled in three dimensions usingoptical tweezers, and demonstrate

their use in imaging surace topogra-phy with nanometre precision whilstapplying ultra-low emto-Newtonscale orces.

The exibility o the PhotonicProessional systems allowed us to

take a rapid prototyping approach toour probe design. A variety o designswere abricated, tested and iterativelyimproved. This resulted in probes thatare equipped with cylindrical trappinghandles to ensure a low orce is exertedon the sample during imaging, andlarge spherical tracking points givingnanometre accuracy position trackingo the position o the probe. By scan-ning our probes over a test sample, also abricated with the Photonic Pro-

essional system, we demonstratedthat this technique has a spatialresolution o approximately 11 nm andapplies an average orce o only 140 N
