A knowledge system including an expert system and a complementary data base. The knowledge system ~s provmded to answer requests, and each request has a record including a plurality of parameters and values for those parameters. The expert system is provided to process the record of a specific request to answer that request, and the complementary database stores a plurahty of records of requests havmg known answers, and any request from a user ms preprocessed by sear- ching the complementary database for a record identmcal to the record of the request. If an iden- tmcai record is found, the known answer to the re- quest having that identmcal record ms gwen to the user to answer his or her request; however if no identical record ts found m the complementary database, the expert system is revoked to answer the request

The present invention revolves a computer- based expert system tool for making decmsions regarding photofinishing processes An expert mentor m the photofinishing area provides specific informaUon both factual knowledge and judgmental knowledge including any judg- mental rules he uses to make judgments and solve problems in the photofimshmg area for a number of different processes. The expert then makes representative decisions using the compu- ter which characterizes situations m terms of themr data values based on informatmon derived from a control strip used in the given photo- finishing process. From this interaction the ex- pert system tool of this invention ms able to generate an internal representation of the logical processes of the expert and to characterize each situation in terms of a series of intermediate jud- gments. The expert system tool of this invention can determine the relatwe logical importance of each of the data points and to classify each as being of either major or minor significance

An improved natural language text parser is dts- closed which provides syntactic analysis of text usmg a fast and compact technique. Sequential steps of word isolation, morphological analysms and dictionary look-up combmed with a comple- ment grammar analysis, are apphed to an input data stream of woods. Word expert rules, verb group analysis and clause analysts are then applied to provide an output data structure where the words in the input data stream are as- sociated with appropriate phrase markings. The principle of operation of the parser is apphcable to a variety of Indo-European languages and provmdes a faster and more compact techmque for parsing in a data processor than has been available in the prior art
