4 Cypress College Commencement 2015

This year, Commencement is a bit sweeter than it has been in the recent past. For the first time in quite some time, the economy appears as if it’s on stable footing. That means the days ahead appear brighter. As the Class of 2015 prepares for the next step — whether that’s transfer to a university, entering a new career, or seeking a promotion — so, too, is Cypress College focused on the future. This is a time of innovation and re-birth at the College. During this academic year, we were successful in our efforts to pass a bond initiative that will change the face of the campus. Notably, this will mean new classrooms and labs for our STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics — and a new Veteran’s Resource Center. Our most-recent expansion included a new Library/Learning Resource Center, the Student Center, and this beautiful Gateway Plaza where graduation is staged. It’s easy to see why we are both enthusiastic and optimistic.

Likewise, our graduates are now poised for that next step in you life. Today’s Commencement ceremony is rooted in centuries-old traditions signifying the educational milestone that each of our graduates has achieved. The ceremony affirms the students’ acquisition of the knowledge and skills required for acceptance into the community of learners and is validated by the conferral of their degrees. This signature ritual provides an occasion for students, faculty and staff members, family members and guests to acknowledge and celebrate the achievement of this significant academic milestone. At Cypress College, this milestone culminates with the awarding of an Associate Degree. Today, these students are Cypress College graduates. Commencement signifies the completion of this stage of their journey. But this is not the end of learning and discovery. It is only a respite along the way.

We are proud of each of our graduates, and we offer our heartfelt congratulations to them on their achievements. We also wish them success as they continue their education, as they pursue their careers, and as they become more fully engaged in their respective communities. The success of our students is at the core of our work at Cypress College.

To our graduates, I ask that as you move on to the next phase of your lives, please remain connected to Cypress College. Let the teachers, counselors and staff members who helped you along the way know how much you appreciate their efforts. And if, in the future, you are in a position to help us support the success of students who will follow you, we would welcome your involvement and we look forward to your participation in our upcoming 50th anniversary to be celebrated in the 2016-2017 academic year.

Congratulations Class of 2015!

CYPRESS COLLEGEOUTSTANDING GRADUATE FOR 2015

Spend just a few minutes with Amber Stoebe and you quickly understand that she genuinely cares about others. This compassion for individuals has guided her to the field of health sciences, in which she plans to craft a meaningful career in physical therapy. The recipient of an Associate in Arts for Transfer (AA-T) degree today, Stoebe will continue her education in the fall with a major in Kinesiology: Exercise Science at California State University, Fullerton.

Amber’s drive to enrich the lives of those around her is evident in her volunteerism. At the California Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy Clinic in Anaheim, she applies her knowledge of human anatomy to her personal interest in others’ well being, “I do what I can to fix a problem,” she says. “I feel a strong passion for patients, and an overwhelming desire to help them.” She also satisfies her motivation to serve as a sports coach and mentor to young girls. In her “free time,” Amber volunteers at the Champions’ Quest Volleyball Clinic; she also has a paid coaching position at the So Cal Juniors Volleyball Club where she is Assistant Coach. Next season, she will lead as Head Coach of the Millikan High School freshman/sophomore volleyball team — her first head-coaching position.

At Cypress, faculty from across the divisions praise both Amber’s personal character and exceptional scholarship. She is known for her top-tier academic performance, excellent work ethic, willingness to ask questions, and mature demeanor. Since starting at the College as a full-time student in 2013, Amber has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is a regular at S.I. sessions, participates in the Kinesiology and Chemistry clubs, and meets often with professors. Somehow, she also manages to have an active social life and carve-out time for personal activities and family. “Being in the Health Science field has helped me realize how precious life is and to never take it for granted,” she says. Amber’s ability to excel in the classroom and take a holistic approach to greater personal growth is inspirational and wise beyond her 20-years.

Cypress College has become a home for the young Buena Park resident. “Coming to the college was honestly the best decision I could have made,” she says. “I had a high GPA at Los Alamitos High School, but I didn’t apply anywhere else because I knew I was coming here. There is an energy here on campus that you don’t find elsewhere. The staff and students all seem positive and happy to be here – the faculty, especially, care for us. It’s a really great learning environment.” She credits the College as providing a supportive place for her to fully develop and explore different interests: “I did not want to go straight from high school to a four-year university when I was still unsure of my major and career,” she explains. “I did not want my parents to spend a lot of money at a large college when I could get the same education – if not better! – at a community college. I was confident in my senior year that Cypress was my school of choice.”

Her path is now clear. Following completion of her undergraduate coursework at CSUF, Ms. Stoebe plans to earn her Doctorate in Physical Therapy at USC, Chapman University, Azusa Pacific University or Western University.

Congratulations, Amber Stoebe! You serve as an inspiration to us all, and we are very proud to recognize you as the Cypress College Class of 2015 Outstanding Graduate of the Year.

CYPRESS COLLEGEOUTSTANDING ALUMNUS AWARD FOR 2015

Navy Captain Russ Bird’s longtime dream of becoming a pilot took flight at Cypress College. After a brief stint at a neighboring campus, he enrolled in 1977 at Cypress College — where he would earn accolades aplenty for his flying. It was a notable stop on what would result in a career as a Naval Aviator, in which he accumulated more than 4,500 military flight hours (including over 2700 in the F/A-18 Hornet), 100 combat hours and 650 carrier arrested landings.

During his 2 years at Cypress College, Capt. Bird took aviation courses and was an active member of the Cypress College flying team. He also helped vault the Cypress College flying team to national recognition. During the 1978 Regional Pacific Intercollegiate Flying Association (PCIFA) flying competition, he received six individual flight event awards. His flying prowess contributed to a second-place overall team finish and a first place standing among the community college teams. At that year’s National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition, he received five individual awards and was named the number three collegiate pilot in the United States. His performance boosted the team’s national ranking to seventh overall and first in the nation for the community college category.

He transferred to San Jose State University, where he joined the flying team. In the 1979 National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition, Capt. Bird was awarded the prestigious award as the top male pilot and top instrument pilot among college aviation students in the nation. He graduated from San Jose State with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aeronautical Operations in 1980. During his collegiate years, Capt. Bird amassed over 1,500 civilian flight hours and obtained his commercial, multi-engine, instrument and flight instructor ratings. After graduation, he entered the Navy in January 1981 as an Aviation Officer Candidate and was commissioned later in 1981. He graduated from primary flight training number one in his class, and was selected for jet training. In 1982, he received the coveted “Wings of Gold” recognition — again as the top student in his class. He was selected to be the first newly-winged aviator to fly the F/A-18 Hornet.

His deployments came aboard the USS Constellation, the USS Nimitz, and USS Abraham Lincoln — serving deployments over Iraq in “Operation Desert Storm” and “Operation Southern Watch,” and over Somalia in “Operation Continued Hope.” Capt. Bird graduated from the Army Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, which marked the start of a long list of leadership positions between 1995 and his retirement in 2008. Capt. Bird’s personal awards during 27-plus years of honorable service include the Legion of Merit, Navy Meritorious Service Medal, with two gold stars, Strike Flight Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, with 3 gold stars, Navy Achievement Medal, with one gold star, and various unit, Service and Theatre awards.

Capt. Bird dedicates much of his time raising money to support college scholarships through the Tailhook Association, Rocky Mountain Tailhookers Chapter. He also volunteers with local mountain bike clubs in the perseveration of mountain bike trails in his community. He lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado with his wife Christina. He has three children, Scott, Amy and Courtney.

NATIONAL ANTHEM

Oh, say! can you see, by thedawn’s early light

What so proudly we hailed atthe twilight’s last gleaming;

Whose broad stripes andbright stars, through

the perilous fight,

O’er the ramparts we watchedwere so gallantly streaming?

And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,

Gave proof through the nightthat our flag was still there:

Oh, say! does that Star-spangledbanner yet wave

O’er the land of the free andthe home of the brave?

ALMA MATER

O Alma Mater, Hail withpride and loyalty,

So sing we now with heartsuplifted to thy glory.

O Cypress, Thee we love,Thy spires shall rise above,Ennobled through the years

with splendor,Cypress, hail to thee.

- Dr. Clifton Stout -(1934 - 1974)

THE MEANING OF ACADEMIC DRESS

Academic dress, which includes a gown, a hood, and a mortarboard cap, originated in the oldest universities and colleges. In fourteenth century England, the statutes of most colleges and universities forbade “excess in apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown which provided warmth in the unheated buildings frequented by medieval scholars. The tailoring of gowns was strictly governed. In the early days of Oxford University, any tailor who departed from the authorized design of the gown, “even by a nail’s breadth,” was to be punished by the vice chancellor of the university or college. The four basic kinds of degrees awarded by the colleges and universities are the associate, the bachelor of arts, the master of arts, and the doctorate. The holders of those degrees are distinguished by their gowns and the hoods. The associate degree, awarded by community colleges, signifies completion of two years of specific work.

The Gowns

Most academic gowns are black. The cut of the robe and sleeves, as well as the trimming, indicates various academic degrees. No trimmings are permitted on the gowns for the associate, bachelor of arts, or master of arts degrees. However, the gown worn by those who have earned their doctorate has a front facing of velvet and three bars of the same velvet across the sleeves.

Mortarboard Caps

There is no general rule for the position of the tassel on a mortarboard. However, numerous institutions have required candidates to wear their tassels on the right side during commencement exercises and to shift them to the left side at the moment the degrees are conferred. This custom replaces individual hooding which was practiced many years ago and still remains in effect at some universities.

The Hoods

Hoods fasten around the neck, drape over the shoulder, and fall down the back. Historically, hoods had several uses. They were used as a head covering; a cape; a receptacle for carrying books and other personal items; and as a bag to collect alms, since most medieval scholars were quite poor. Hoods are worn by those who have earned the master’s degree or doctorate. The colors on the hood represent the field of study and indicate from which college or university the individual received the degree.
