SAYGOODBYE

TIMETO

WHEN IT’S TIME FOR ME TO SAY GOODBYE TO

Two years ago, when I was preparing to come to the UK for pursuing my postgraduate degree, a thing my family and I were always afraid of for years happened ----- my grandpa died. My other grandparents died when I was very little, which means in most of time, I didn’t really understand what was happening. Howev-er, my grandpa’s death in 2018 made me realize death and loss is always in our life. When it comes to that moment, how and what could we do to prepare and face it? I planned to express the meaning of funeral in my country, Taiwan.

However, in 2019 and 2020, the world was suddenly attacked significantly by the pandemic, we have to face that we will lose our degree show and we have to switch the direction from physical to digital display. What is more, some of us will probably lose our be-loved again. I stayed in the UK alone, facing the risk not only for myself but also for my family in a faraway country. This situation brings me and my emotion back to 2018 in a certain way. Then I realise that loss and the threaten of death are always serious issues that we have to deal with.

As a graphic designer, I want to keep exploring more meaning of the funeral culture of my country, Taiwan. I would like to analyse the codes of the funeral culture and express it to share the feelings I have received from these materials and rituals. Then, I would like to provide a way that people and talk about their feelings about loss and death.

Thus, I decide to collect more data and feedbacks from other Taiwanese and workers in related funeral societies and areas and express them with my works. I choose to transfer my research with some interactive way which provides an opportunity to brings com-munications. Furthermore, the design works would be also another form of funeral for my degree show. Hopefully everyone would be able to express them-selves with my design works!

MODUSINTERVIEW

FIELDWORKVEDIOS

MODUSIN DIFFERENT AREA

According to interviews and fieldworks, funeral in different countries has different forms and meanings. For example, funeral in Europe tend to be all in black and white. In the UK, people often not only commemorate their beloved through rituals but also by donating chairs or flowers to the deceased’s favourite places. The whole memorial ceremony would be held in a church or cemetery. People in Ghana believe the most impor-tant thing in a funeral is being positive rather than keeping de-pressing. I found even a small city or distinct religions might has different expressions or formats of funeral culture. This push me went back to do more research about funerals and folk religions in my country and even in my hometown city, Tainan.

INTERVIEWS

Death is not only about sadness or darkness.

Not all processes of funeral are talking about the death, some of them are talking about a best wish and blessing people want to give the deceased.

Funeral is a process which might could accompany people to get over the hardest time at the beginning.

There are some meanings of the funeral are as important as sadness. Such as love, memories, blessing, apologizing, forgiveness, hopes and expectation for an afterlife.

I won’t say funeral would cure people’s heart completely, but at least sometimes it helps a lot at the first few days when people just receive the news of beloved’s death. It becomes a short-term goal that people want to do for their beloved.

Funeral includes both rituals, folk legends, culture, folk religions and the value of human beings. It is an expression of relationships like family, lovers and friends and different forms of love. And also, a bridge to a “new life”, no matter it is about a new life without the deceased, or an afterlife of the deceased.

We prepare a best funeral we could do for the deceased for expressing our love and blessing to him/her.

FIELDWORK Traditional Funeral in Taiwan, Tainan

Material: Wormwood

Material: Banyan tree

After first stage research, all the result has shown a diversity of funeral culture in Taiwan. There could be a big difference between an urban city and a historical city, such as Taipei and Tainan. Thus, I decided to focus on the customs of my hometown city rather than the whole country.

MATERIALS OF FUNERALS Paper Offerings

At the stage of secondary research, I’ve done lots of reading and studied different cases to figure out the basic principles of materials, rituals, legends and customs. These fundamental theories allow me to do the next stage of exploration. In addition, analysing rea-sons behind these principles also helps me to build up structures of my illustration.

MATERIALS OF FUNERALS Joss paper

During the whole funeral, joss paper could be recognised as one of the most important materials. People use distinct types of joss paper represent diverse meaning. There could be more than fifteen different kinds of patterns for distinct purposes. Some of them means clothes for the deceased, some of them could become money which the deceased can use in the nether world before they start their new afterlife.

49-DAYS-JOURNEY SEVEN 7th DAY Classification

In my hometown, people believe that the deceased would be judged successively by ten gods and they will decide this person will go to the heaven, rebirth or the hell. The result depends on if the deceased’s behaviour when he/she was alive. Before all the judgements have been enforced, the deceased would stay in the nether world for 49 days. During this period, priests would lead the deceased’s family go through lots of rituals. Some of these rituals mean to communicate with the deceased the other steps are taken to take care of the deceased’s stay in the nether world. Some scriptures are also read to help him/her to go through the whole judgement. After the research of theories and interviews, I classified all the process into seven stages. In addition, some steps are repeated so that I partly re-organised the order and combined them with important materials like patterns to build up an introduction of this 49-days-journey.

COLOURS Cultural and creative projects

I would like to insert some little motion works into part of my design. So I have looked some projects which can provide me some ideas of transferring and movement.

In addition, I found these motion and illustration references all have highlighted their colour palette. Due to this reason, I referred some culture and creative projects in Taiwan to help me plan my colour palette.

Interactions

Before the pandemic, I planned to develop my projects with lots of interesting interactive el-ements in a book, so that it will have connection with my previous book. Due to the lockdown of everything, I tried to figure out a way the I can still keep interactions in my design.

DIGITAL Website, App

Due to the lockdown, I switch my project to a digital version. I thought that would be still interactive and interesting if my design can start with online website but allow the audience to write down their words and print my design. It was also a moment that we were announced that we probably will lose our exhibition and graduation ceremony which made me feel very depressed. At the same moment, I stayed in the UK alone, in a tiny room, faced to the panic both from my parents and myself. I realised that I was facing another form of loss and death. It was spiritual, hidden deeply and hurtful. So, I came out an idea that I can let my design become a diary of funeral, for myself to speak out my fear and stress. In addition, if this diary could provide people to write down their sadness, accompany people from the worldwide in a Taiwanese way, will that make my design more meaningful? I start to try if I can develop my project as funeral calendar and also a diary.

GOODBYEjust for now.I will keep going and working.

Although for now it is time to say goodbye

As a graphic designer, I feel very excited that I can have this opportunity to finish this project. In May of 2018, my grandpa died peacefully of a really old age. We were all really broken although we know this day must come someday. A question jumped out in our minds: “How could we do for grandpa for the last time? What kind of funeral we could held for him?” For me, personally, this funeral was like the last journey my family and I took to say goodbye to my grandpa.

We usually say goodbye to farewell with other people, so does the funeral. It would be a last goodbye that we said to our beloved. Moreover, funeral can show an attitude or a way that people face lost, death and sadness. It could be really meaningful and unforget-table. During the whole memorial ceremony of my grandpa, I finally realise there is a big and complicated culture behind a colourful funeral. From the funeral, we experienced many folk rituals which made us feel that we can really see how my grandpa go to another better world.

During this project, I explored and develope lots of design form and skills, which is a shame that we can-not really finish a physical version before the end of this sememster. However, I will keep going and work-ing on this project, to make it possible to real publish in the future. Also this is one of the biggest project I have done these two years, I would say I did not really organised well my timetable. New skills are fantastic and useful but it would be really hard to predict the estimated time and this will be one of the most im-portant things I work on.

I am really appreciate that I have experienced so far, and also for helps from all the tutors, technicians and directors. I hope under this epidemic, I will still have chance to share my physical works with the public.
