The subject invention concerns a novel and use- ful insecticide with activity against insect pests of the order Lepidoptera. Pests in the order Lepidoptera do heavy damage to crops, e.g., cabbage and broccoli. The insecticide of the sub- ject invention is a novel B. thuringiensis microbe referred to as B.t. PS85A1, or mutants thereof. Specifically disclosed is an asporogenous mutant designated B.t. PS85AI-168. The spores or crystals of B.t. PS85A1, or the crystals of B.t. PS85Al-168, are useful to control lepidopteran pests in various environments.
