Dear NAMI Members,
Spring is finally here—although the weather isn’t always cooperating! As the flowers blossom, the grass be-
comes greener, and the leaves on the trees are appearing, it is a time for our revitalization. We can change
our winter routines to match the awakening spring and summer. Becoming more active, spending more time
outside (with your sunscreen and hat), enjoying the beauty of nature, seeking new local experiences, and
meeting new people are all ways to improve our mental health.
May is Mental Health Month. NAMI Greater Wheeling is having a Green Ribbon Awareness Campaign lo-
cally. Look around your communities for the green ribbons to promote Mental Health Month. National
NAMI is promoting a program #CureStigma. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are the antidotes for
the stigma against people with mental illness. Ways to participate in #CureStigma are to: visit CureStig-
ma.org for messages of hope, take a short quiz, and receive NAMI’s new emoji/sticker pack for your phone;
inspire others to use their voices to share information, resources, and support for mental health conditions on
social media during Mental Health Month; and donate to NAMI to help cure stigma and improve the lives of
people affected with mental illness.
On June 7-8 NAMI Greater Wheeling and West Liberty University are partnering to sponsor “Shedding Light
on Mental Health” Conference at the Highlands Event Center. Inspirational and informative are just a few
ways to describe the speakers and the conference. Check it out.
Enjoy your summer! Stay hydrated, use sunscreen and protective clothing, and have hope!
