Poem no.5 r e v e a l s how a l l t h e c r e a t u r e s o f n a t u r e ,

C o n t e m p l a t i o n o f p e a c e , h a r m o n y a n d b e a u t y o f n a t u r e ,

Poem n o . 2 1 i l l u s t r a t e s how t h e w a v e s o f t h e s e a

Poem n o . 2 7 a l s o p r e s e n t s how i n a b s o l u t e d a r k n e s s
and i n t h e c o n t i n u o u s d o w n p o u r o f r a i n t h e p o o t h e a r s

m y s t i c a l l i f e , c a n o v e r c o m e t h e s e a s t h e f i r e o f d i v i n e
l o v e b u r n s i n h i s h e a r t c o n s t a n t l y a n d b r i g h t l y . L o v e
o f t h e D i v i n e e n a b l e s t h e p o e t t o see h i s way c l e a r l y
a n d s u r e l y e v e n t h r o u g h t h e d a r k n e s s o f n i g h t .
T a g o r e ' s God i n G i t a n f i l i - i s a l l p e r v a s i v e a n d
i m m a n e n t i n N a t u r e . He c o m e s t h r o u g h t h e f o r e s t s i n

m y s t i c a l a p p r e h e n s i o n o f H i s n e a r p r e s e n c e ( X L V , 271.
An e n t h u s i a s t i c s u r r e n d e r t o t h e s p o n t a n e i t y o f n a t u r a l
s c e n e r y l e a d s t h e p o e t t o h i s B e l o v e d , God. He w o u l d
t h e n l i e e x p o s e d t o a l l t h e w i n d s t h a t b l o w " f r o m a b o v e " .
The d i v i n e l i g h t , t h e n , w o u l d f l o o d h i s s o u l , t h e
d i v i n e m u s i c w i l l r a v i s h i t a n d t h e s o u l w i l l e x p r e s s
i t s j o y by humming t h e "hymn o f t h e u n i v e r s e . "
Poem no.54 i s w h o l l y s y m b o l i c . T h e p e r f u m e o f
t h e b a b l a f l o w e r s c o m i n g f r o m t h e b e n d o f t h e r o a d -- s y m b o l i s e s t h e e m e r g e n c e o f t h e p o e t t o meet h i s
B e l o v e d . Poem 57 i s a s o n g o f p r a i s e , a hymn t o l i g h t ,
h i c h i s t h e s y m b o l o f t h e j o y o f God i n t h e a c t o f
c r e a t i o n . I t i s s w o e t a n d g l o r i o u s . D i v i n e l i g h t
illuminates t h e p o e t ' s s o u l w i t h w i s d o m , u n d e r s t a n d i n g
a n d l o v e . T h i s l i g h t f i l l s t h e w o r l d w i t h j o y a n d
b e a u t y . T h e p o e t stresses t h a t N a t u r e i s o v e r f l o o d e d
w i t h D i v i n e j o y . T t i s t h e m a n i f e s t a t i o n o f H i s

The e n t i r e c r e a t i o n i s b e a u t i f u l a n d i t s b e a u t y i s
a n e x p r e s s i o n o f t h e l o v e o f God f o r t h e p o e t a s w e l l
a s G o d ' s g r e a t n e s s a n d g l o r y . The g o l d e n l i g h t p l a y i n g
upon t h e l e a v e s , t h e c l o u d s m o v i n g l a z i l y a c r o s s t h e
s k y a n d t h e p l e a s a n t b r e e z e f l o w i n t j a g a i n s t t h e c h e e k s
o f t h e p o e t a r e d i f f e r e n t e x p r e s s i o n s o f G o d ' s l o v e
f o r h i m . He a s s e r t s , Ityes I know, t h i s i s n o t h i n g

The p o e t h a s h a d t h i s b e a u t i f u l m y s t i c a l e x p e r i e n c e

T h e p o e t i s g r e a t l y i n s p i r e d by t h e s i g h t o f
i n n o c e n t c h i l d r e n who g o on p l a y i n g a n d s h o u t i n g a n d
d a n c i n g d u r i n g t h e i r p l a y , u n c o n c e r n e d a b o u t t h e v a s t
m o t i o n l e s s s k y s p r e a d i n g o v e r t h e i r h e a d s a n d o v e r t h e
t e m p e s t u o u s w a t e r o f t h e o c e a n . I J a t u r e i s t h e i r m o t h e r ,
a s i t i s t o t h e p o e t , a n d t h e y a r e n o t a f r a i d o f h e r

a c c o r d i n g t o o u r p o e t t h e s o u l o f man a n d t h e s o u l o f
n a t u r e a r e d e r i v e d f r o m t h i s U n i v e r s a l S o u l . T h a t i s
why h e s a y s t h a t t h e same l i f e t h a t r u n s t h r o u g h h i s
v e i n s a l s o r u n s t h r o u g h t h e v e i n s o f t h e c o u n t l e s s
o b j e c t s o f n a t u r e . Poem n o . 6 9 o p e n s , "The same s t r e a m

D i v i n e L i fe f i n d s a j o y f u l m e l o d i o u s e x p r e s s i o n
t h r o u g h t h e s o u n d s o f n a t u r e . The e n t i r e c r e a t i o n
i s a m u l t i - c o l o u r e d , g o r g e o u s show, a n e t e r n a l d r a m a
i n w h i c h t h e p o e t i s a l w a y s s e e k i n g t h e s u b l i m e a n d t h e
s u b l i m e i s e v e r s e e k i n g him. I n t h e m y s t i c i s m e x p r e s s e d
i n G i t a n j a l i , t h e I n f i n i t e i s a s e a g e r t o u n i t e Himself
w i t h t h e p o e t a s h e i s t o u n i t e w i t h t h e I n f i n i t e .
I t i s God who a w a k e n s t h e p o e t t o t h e b e a u t y a n d
e n c h a n t m e n t o f H i s c r e a t i o n . And h e f e e l s t h a t t h e
w h o l e c r e a t i o n i s G o d ' s L i l a a n d God, l i k e , t h e p o s t . - t a k e s j o y i n i t s b e a u t y , a s a c h i l d t a k e s j o y i n h i s

f l o w e r s a n d f l o w e r s r i p e n i n t o f r u i t s . I n poem no.81 .

T a g o r e a n n a t u r e m y s t i c i s m v e r y v i v i d l y . Communion
w i t h t h e One " h i d d e n i n t h e h e a r t o f t h i n g s " e n a b l o ;
t h e p o e t t o b e g i n anew a n d f i n d h i s " g a r d o n f u l l w i t h
w o n d e r s o f f l o w e r s . " T h e D i v i n e c r e a t e d t h e u n i v e r s e
by d i v i d i n g Himse l f , s e p a r a t i n g p a r t s o f Himself and
g i v i n g t h e m i n n u m e r a b l e b e a u t i f u l s h a p e s , c o l o u r s a n d
s o u n d s . So w h a t w e p e r c e i v c t h r o u g h t h e s e n s e s a re
s o many d i f f e r e n t p a r t s o f t h e S u p r e m e S o u l . N a t u r e
m y s t i c i s m o f t e n t e n d s t o b e p a n t h e i s t i c .
I n t h e g l o r y a n d s p l e n d o u r o f t h e m y r i a d f o r m s o f
t h e u n i v e r s e , t h e p o e t sees t h e r e f l e c t i o n o f t h e
g r e a t n o s s a n d g l o r y o f God who i s f o r m l e s s a n d i n f i n i t e .
He h a s r e a l l y e x p e r i e n c e d t h e p l e a s u r e o f h i s ' t o u c h '
a n d h i s w h o l e body h a s b e e n t h r i l l e d by i t . After
e x p e r i e n c i n g s u c h i n e f f a b l e b l i s s h e i s c o n t e n t t o d i e
e v e n .
T h e m u l t i - c o l o u r e d b e a u t y o f N a t u r e h a d a g r e a t
f a s c i n a t i o n f o r Tagore. He con fesses , "I had a deep
sense a l m o s t f r o m i n f a n c y o f t h e b e a u t y o f Na tu re . " 3
There was a l s o a ' l o n g i n g ' i n him, when young, t o r u n
away f r o m h i s "own s e l f and be one w i t h e v e r y t h i n g i n
Na tu re . la4 To h i m N a t u r e was some th i ng l i v i n g and
k i n d r e d . He f e l t c l o s e compan ionsh ip and harmony
w i t h i t . I t was f t l i v i n g " t o h i m , " i n t i m a t e l y c l o s e t o
5 h i s l i f e w a n d "permeated w i t h a s u b t l e t o u c h o f k i n s h i p " - He had "an i n t i m a t e f e e l i n g o f compan ionsh ip w i t h t h e

communion w i t h them i n a m y s t i c a l way.
The chasm between t h e human and t h e non-human,
l i f e and n o n - l i f e i s b r i d g e d and i t r e s u l t s i n a l i v i n g
commun ica t ion between t h e human ( t h e p o e t ) and t h e
n a t u r a l . No l o n g e r does N a t u r e a p p a r t o h i m as mute.

I n Sadhana Tagore w r i t e s , "We c o u l d have n o communicat ion
wha tever w i t h o u r s u r r o u n d i n g s i f t h e y were a b s o l u t c l y
f o r e i g n t o us. "7 He a l s o emphasizes t h a t t h e r e i s a
r e g u l a r commerce bctwoen man (here t h e p o c t ) and t h e
t h i n g s of Nature . And t h i s , a c c o r d i n g t o h im, "shows
t h e r e i s a r a t i o n a l c o n n e c t i o n between h i m and n a t u r e ,
f o r we n e v e r can make a n y t h i n g o u r own e x c e p t t h a t
wh ich i s t r u l y r e l a t e d t o us." a
Tagore r e j e c t s t h e w e s t e r n a c c e n t on a sudden
i n e x p l i c a b l e b reak between n a t u r a l and human realms.
