Selection to the Northern Highlands Hall of Fame

Athletes and Teams. The Hall of Fame will honor outstanding achievements by Highlands’s athletes during their time at the school. The Hall of Fame will also honor outstanding achievements by teams. To be considered, the individual must have been graduated for at least 10 years and the team’s accomplishment must have been at least ten years ago.

Contributors. The Hall of Fame will honor faculty, coaches, advisors, and administrators, as well as community volunteers who have done something specific to build Northern Highlands into one of the finest high schools in New Jersey and created the conditions leading to our students’ outstanding achievements.

Distinguished Alumni. The Hall of Fame will honor significant career achievements and contributions to society of Highlands’s students after their graduation – to be considered an alumna or alumnus must be 10 years graduated.

Chris Carey

The Class of 1970 was the first class to enter Northern Highlands in September as Freshmen and attend 4 full years. The early years were challenging as the school found its culture and started establishing a history of excellence. Imagine a beautiful new facility with an empty trophy case!

Chris established a leadership role early on as President of the class, which he held for three years. Chris had an inclusive approach which created a feeling of comraderie and love that went across all social groups, and to this day has led to one of the closest of the graduating classes with huge attendance at regularly scheduled class reunions.

In sports Chris participated in Football, Wrestling and Track.

In Football he excelled as a linebacker and fullback. In the days of Ironman football, he typically left the field once at halftime. As captain his Senior year, the team was a respectable 5-3 and he was named to All-Suburban and All County honors.

As one of the slowest on the Track team, Chris found his niche as a pole vaulter. Led by Coach Sok and his famous “eat nails” philosophy, and under Fred Procopio’s tutelage, Chris was a perfect candidate. He had a highly nontraditional style which caused him to hit the bag only half the time, but got him to 11’6” where he held the school record for many years.

But Chris’s greatest success was found in wrestling.

In his sophomore year, Chris broke and dislocated his right elbow in wrestling practice. As a result, Chris trained himself to wrestle left handed, which became a significant advantage throughout high school and college. Opponents could never really figure him out! In his recovery, Chris formed a lasting and important relationship with his coach Lars Larson. Lars always believed in him.

In his Junior year, Chris won the 168-pound varsity position and was undefeated in dual meets 14-0. He was District and Regional Champion. He wrestled in the State Tournament and finished Fourth in the State with an overall record of 20-2.

In his Senior year, Chris was Christmas Tournament Champion, undefeated in dual meets, was District and Regional Champion and wrestled in the State Tournament. In the State Semifinals Chris was leading the reigning State Champ, Dave Gaunt of Hunterdon Central 4-0 and as a surprise to us all, was caught in an unusual move and lost the match. His next match was against the Regional Champ from Montclair for the Third Place medal. With pure will and determinations, Chris overpowered his opponent with a cross ankle pick and pinned him in 13 seconds! Chris held “The fastest pin in the state tournament” record for 30 years. He ended his season 25-1.

Chris was recruited by Princeton University and as a Freshman won the West Point All East Tournament. As a starter on the varsity wrestling team, they dominated the East and were Ivy League Champions all of Chris’ four years. Chris was a 2 time Harvard-Yale-Princeton Metal Winner. In his senior year, wrestling 177 pounds, he was named a mid-season All American. He finished 5th in the Eastern Regional Tournament with an overall record of 17-2.

Lauren Cash

Lauren Cash Gebbia has been inducted into the Northern Highlands High School Hall of Fame for her impressive achievements and notably athletic resume during her four years at Northern Highlands. Lauren was a standout tennis player not only at Northern Highlands, but in the Bergen and Tri-State Area.

Lauren was named Athlete of the Week two years in a row for her undefeated results, modest attitude and gamely sportsmanship. At the end of her high school career, Lauren had an impressive 96-1 tennis record; having lost her only match her freshman year at the NJ State Tournament in the quarter finals. She also was named Bergen Country’s Athlete of the Decade for tennis throughout 2000-2010.

Lauren grew up in Upper Saddle River and Allendale and attended Boston College where she played for the Eagles. She played number 2 in singles and number 1 in doubles, where she earned a collegiate singles ranking of 113 in the country. She was also awarded a scholar athlete at BC.

After college, she began doing what she loves and knows best, teaching tennis at an indoor tennis club. After working at the facility for five years, being the club manager, and the USTA tournament director, she has now taken on the job as the Head Director of Racquet Sports at Hackensack Golf Club in Oradell teaching tennis and platform tennis.

Lauren is happily married to her husband Guy Gebbia where they currently reside in Mahwah. Lauren also has a mother Louise Cash and a sister Karen Cash whom are all here today to support her on her outstanding achievements and successful career.

Katherine MardyKatherine Mardy , came to Northern Highlands from Hohokus. She is the daughter of educators and as a result has always had a strong quest for knowledge.

She earned high honor roll all four years at Highlands, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Katherine is another example of a long list of Northern Highlands students who matriculated at Ivy League universities, graduating from Yale University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and subsequently a Masters degree from Columbia University.

Katherine played soccer and basketball at Highlands.

In soccer she was a three year varsity starter and first team all league her junior year. The girls soccer team was league champion her sophomore and senior years.

However, Katherine’s greatest sports achievements came on the basketball court,

Katherine’s basketball accomplishments are too numerous to mention, following are some high points:

She was a four year varsity starter

A major milestone in high school basketball is 1000 career points.

In her varsity career Katherine scored 1428 points

She scored an average of 14 points per game

She was the Bergen Record Athlete of the Week

In the year 2000, Katherine became the NH girls basketball all time leading scorer and rebounder. She held this position for thirteen years.

She averaged a career double double

Katherine was first team all league all four years

In her senior year when Katherine was captain, the girls basketball team was league champions for the first time in NH history

The girls basketball team was State Sectional Champions in 2000 and State Sectional Champion Finalists in 2001.

She was All County first team in both the Bergen Record and Star Ledger

She was First Team Star Ledger All State Group 3

She was picked for the Ridgewood News All Decade Team 2000-2010.As mentioned, Katherine went from NH to Yale University where she played basketball freshman and sophomore years. More importantly at Yale she met Matthew Baker who was a defensive back on the football team. They married in 2011, and have a wonderful 20 month old son, Wesley.

Cari Schmitt

Every once in a while an athlete comes along who is different. It might be extra talent, quickness, speed, attitude, or just that something you can’t wrap your arms around. Such was the case with this year’s field hockey nominee.

As a freshman she was small but determined. Each day at practice she would annoy the seniors, who wanted her to slow down, by always finishing first in our team run. Simply put, her motor never stopped. This unbelievable freshman went on to become a senior captain and somehow continued to keep that motor running while demonstrating leadership and commitment to her fellow teammates.

I remember a time, when after two days of steady rain, I decided to cancel practice and instead have a study day. I no sooner made the announcement when there was a knock at my classroom door. I opened it to find standing there in full practice gear my captain with her hockey stick in hand. She suggested that we have practice…….no in fact, she demanded that we practice assuring me that the team’s grades were just fine but that we needed to prepare for our next game. She won….I lost. When I arrived at practice, I noticed that the team was well into their warmups and in fact doing pushups in the mud. And there she was in the middle of it smiling at me as I approached. Who is this kid I wondered? As our eyes met, she smiled, and that was followed by a streak of mud sliding down the side of her cheek. She shouted to the team,”10 more pushups for coach” and they responded.

Her leadership skills were only surpassed by her athletic ability. Her quickness determination, and preparation would lead this honoree to the Bergan County scoring championship in 1995. She would repeat as a two time all county athlete and was selected all North Jersey offense. The awards continued with first team All-state, a nomination for high school All American, and finally a unanimous selection to the all decade team for the 1990s. Not too shabby for that little freshman from Allendale with the biggest heart in Bergen County.

After graduating from NHRHS in 1996, Cari attended Bucknell University where she played Field Hockey from 19961997. She graduated from Bucknell in 2000 with a BS in Business Administration. Following graduation, Cari worked at CS Technology and then Oakwood Worldwide in marketing and sales. She went on to attend Lehigh University, where she obtained an MBA with a concentration in Entrepreneurship in 2015. After completing her degree, she was retained by Viihealth, Inc. a Customer Engagement and Specialty Marketing company, dedicated to helping Life Science and Healthcare companies improve patient compliance in order to achieve better results. She resides in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Andy Welter

Andrew Welter, better known as Welts is one of the finest, pure athletes to have graduated from NHRHS. During his years growing up you could find him on the baseball fields in Allendale, Crestwood Lake in the summer swimming, playing whiffle ball or hockey in the winter. Welts was one of those kids in school who was always picked first in pick up games and physed class; always having the fire in the belly to win even at those levels. LOL Upon graduation, Andy was awarded the much coveted Contini trophy (Three sport athlete who excels) Andy was a multi-sport athlete who excelled in baseball, soccer and basketball; coached by the likes of Conrad, Palek, Pize and we must not forget Fitz in summer league baseball. He led the baseball team at NH, batting over .400 as a three-year starter. He won 2nd Team All County honors in baseball as a senior.

Andy started at left wing on the Highlander’s 1981 NBIAL co-championship soccer team that was ranked 2nd in Bergen County in the Record final poll.

Andy won 4 varsity letters in basketball; he averaged 18 points and 14 rebounds per game his senior year and won 3rd Team All county honors his senior year on a team that reached the Bergen Jamboree semifinals and Christmas Tournament Championship

If three sports were not enough to satisfy his competitive appetite, Andy was on a three-man team that placed 1st in the Bergen County Demi-Decathlon in track in 1981.

After graduating Northern Highlands Andy attended Montclair State University where he earned All District and was awarded the Lee Walksy Outstanding Teammate Award along with All American honors in baseball, while leading the team in slugging percentage, doubles and RBI’s on the way to the Division 3 College World Series in 1986. In 1985 Andy batted .290 as the starting left fielder on the league champion Chatham A’s of the Cape Cod Baseball League. In 1986 he was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and played for the New York Penn League, Newark Orioles and the Florida State League, Miami Marlins.

Steve Wetterauw

Northern Highlands High School has fielded over 50 teams since it’s inception and has graduated many incredible players – some All State, All Decade, and a select few have gone on to play in the NFL. But only one was selected as First Team All County two years in a row – Steve Wetterauw.

Steve played halfback and returned kicks at Highlands, but was a two year First Team All County pick and a Bergen Record Honorable Mention All Century pick as a defensive back. He still holds the NH record for most interceptions in a season (9 in 1976) and for career interceptions as well, recording 17 picks from 1974-1976. Coaches and former teammates remembered Steve to hit like a freight train and Steve went on to a four year career at Kutztown State University in Pennsylvania. Steve was also a first team all NBIAL catcher on the baseball team at Northern Highlands as well.

Steve and his wife Mary graduated from Northern Highlands in 1977.They have one daughter, Kelsey, and make their home in Ramsey. Steve owns his own contracting firm, Wetterauw Construction.

1978 Football Team

Big crowds, loud bands, crazy fan base and as one alumnus called the ‘78 football team one of the toughest, hard working teams he has ever seen go through Highlands. Their Defense to this day stands as one of the best on record backed by an offense that was not just 4 yards and a cloud of dust, but explosive as well. There are just too many great players to name on this team, but there were 24 seniors who’s mission it was to bring the state championship trophy back to Allendale. While the senior backs and receivers received most of the accolades in the papers each week, they were surrounded by a tenacious line on both sides of the ball and some very talented under classmen.

The team was led by the core four of coach Conrad assisted by coache’s Mortensen, Procopio, and Cobb. It seemed when one player would fall, there were two to pick him up; the depth was unimaginable. Opening day against Riverdell probably tells the story of how the season would end with a 14-7 win after driving 72 yards in 8 plays in the 4th qtr. The following week the highlanders beat reigning league champs Indian Hills by a score of 26-21. After posting wins over WH, Westwood and Ramapo it was time to play the undefeated Cowboys of Pascack Hills for the Homecoming game. The Highlanders fell 28-7 and the loss was bitter. Many coaches out there say that a loss early on isn’t the worse thing that can happen, makes you appreciate the wins even more and makes you hungrier in the long run. Unfortunately for the highly favored Englewood football team in the first round of the playoffs, Highlands was hungry alright, smashing them in the mouth with a 28-12 win in which many felt was the upset of the weekend.

This win would now put them in the state championship against rival Pascack Hills. Before a standing room only crowd, the highlanders went on to “Level The Hills” 6-0. Highlands posted it’s 2nd championship under coach Conrad; a team that was so tough, so resilient and yes a little crazy on and off the field, as Principal Jack Mintzer and VP Al Vinci would attest. LOL If there was ever a band of brothers striving for one goal, it was this team and they achieved it. Congratulations to the NH 1978 State Football Champions!

Edward Fitzpatrick Contributor

Ed Fitzpatrick is being inducted posthumously into the Northern Highlands High School Hall of Fame for the countless time, energy, and effort he gave to the school, the communities it serves, and the students at Northern Highlands.

Ed coached the Northern Highlands summer baseball teams of the Stan Musial, North Jersey Majors, and Met leagues. As Jerry Emison said, “Ed was a great supporter of Highlands athletics, athletes, and coaches. He was a coach at heart who believed in sports and the lessons it taught young people. Ed was a great example of a parent who was involved for all the right reasons. Ed was a very special person who, as the mentor Coach Corcoran would say, Ed just gets it – Coach’s highest compliment”. The press box at the NH baseball field was dedicated to Ed, “Fitz’s Press Box”, on May 12, 2001.

He was inducted into the Bergen County Semi Pro Hall of Fame on September 28, 1991. Ed grew up in Ramsey and Allendale and went to Don Bosco High School, graduating in 1958. He was a standout on the Bosco Baseball team. He went on to American International College and got his law degree from the New York School of Law. Ed was a partner at the law firm of Clapp and Eisenberg in Newark from 1989 until 1994. He then went on to become a partner at DeCotiis, Fitzpatrick, and Gluck from 1994 until his death in 2000.

Ed was the mayor of Allendale for eight years – 1975-1982. As mayor he made huge improvements to Crestwood Lake and he and Stiles Thomas led the charge for the town of Allendale to secure the Celery Farm, Allendale’s finest nature gem. The Celery Farm was formally dedicated by Mayor Fitzpatrick on June 13, 1981 – “60 acres of forever wild, water, marsh, and woodlands”.

Ed left behind his wife Sue, and was always tremendously proud of his four children Tim (NH Class of 1980), Colleen (’87), Mary (’91), and Cara (’93).

Buddy Ajalat Director of the Vocal Music Progream

Buddy Ajalat came to Northern Highlands in 1966, just a year after the school opened. As the first Choral Director of the new school, his challenge was to build the school’s vocal music program, and that he did.Within a few years Buddy was directing the Concert Choir, Woman’s Glee Club, the Madrigals and the first of the school’s musicals. All these activities quickly gained a strong reputation for excellence in the community… a reputation thats stays strong to this day.

In 1972 the American Nationalities Services sponsored the Highlands Choir on a 21 day concert goodwill tour of Romania and the Czech Republic. Forty –five students had the privilege of making this tour, which at that time was at that time behind the “Iron Curtain”.The Madrigal Group made its mark in 1975 when it won the competition to appear at the Eastern Division of the Music Educators Convention at the Philadelphia Academy of Music and again at the 1977 convention in Washington, DC.

And in the mid-70s, Buddy was appointed as Northern Highland’s Supervisor of Fine Arts, and in 1977 he was elected to a two-year term as President of the New Jersey Music Educators Association. His Leadership was again recognized in 1983 when he was elected to a two-year term as President of the Eastern Division of the Music Educators National Conference. In 1985 Buddy was presented the NJ Governor’s Award in Arts Education by Governor Thomas Kean. This award was not only an honor for Mr. Ajalat but brought great recognition to Northern Highland’s Vocal Music program.

In the early 1990s Buddy’s persistence and influence in developing a true Cultural Arts curriculum component led to the design and establishment of the Cultural Arts Center.Many of the traditions Buddy began at Highlands were quite popular with the students and community. The holiday season presentations of “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and the Renaissance/Baroque Dinner Concerts were a big success. At that time a-capella style singing was in its prime as it is again today.Mr. Ajalat knew how to draw the crowd. His musicals grew to be one of school’s anticipated annual events. Classics like “Oklahoma”, ”Music Man”, “South Pacific”, “Mame”, “Hello Dolly”. “Grease”, “Guys and Dolls”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”, “George, M”, “ Annie Get your Gun”, “ The Boy Friend” and his last show, “Two Gentleman of Verona”, were so well received many were repeated during his career and in years after.

With Mr. Ajalat’s encouragement and help many music students from Northern Highlands competed and performed in the New Jersey All State Chorus and Bergen County Chorus, a practice which continues today.

As the educator, Buddy would say,“ It’s the process, not the product that counts”As the musician and friend to his students, one might hear him say, “Work hard--Do your best--Have fun --and enjoy the process. The hay is in the barn.”

Judy Dayner Supervisor of the Science Department

While many teachers have contributed much to Northern Highlands over the years, few have been as remarkable as Judy Dayner of the Science Department. Judy, who taught at Highlands from 1969 to 2002, and who was Supervisor from 1998 to 2002, was an inspirational instructor in the field of biology. Many students who went on to study science at university, from those who became doctors to those who became meteorologists, say that Judy was the one who ignited their interests.

Year after year, under her tutelage, AP Biology students received the highest scores in record numbers. But, as one parent wrote, “Inspiring bright students to excel isn’t all that Judy does well. The parents of average students also praise her ability to keep their children interested and working hard.”

Judy was recognized beyond the school community with numerous awards on the county, state, and national levels, including the prestigious Radioshack National Teacher Award, which she was given in 2001.

In addition, she was named Bergen County Teacher of the Year in 1996, given the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation Earthwatch Education Award in 1998, and was named “Outstanding Biology Teacher of the Year” in 1982 by the National Association of Biology Teachers.

When Judy was Biology II Team Coach for the NJ Science League, each team she coached went on to win one of the top five spots in state competition, and one, the 1993 team, represented the state in the National Finals in Colorado.

Judy sought opportunities to keep her knowledge of biology current by participating in workshops and doing research. She was part of the Human Genetics Workshop at Fairleigh Dickinson University and participated in National Science Foundation Workshops at Ball State University, Indiana University, and Montclair State, in addition to working on a Howard Hughes Medical Grant in molecular biology at Princeton University.

Serving as a reader and consultant for the College Board’s Advanced Placement Exam in Biology, editing and publishing materials for biology textbooks and the National Biology Exam, Judy was well known on the state and national level.

One of her final projects before she retired was to make recommendations of what to include in the Science wing, a structure that turned out to be the envy of many schools in the area.

Retired and living with her husband John on St. Helena Island in South Carolina, Judy is active in an organization dedicated to protecting the endangered sea turtles who nest on the island. She and John also travel, both in the U.S. and abroad. Unfortunately, before Judy learned of her induction, they had made plans to go to Europe, where Judy has family, and were unable to change them.

We congratulate Judy in her absence and thank her for her manyyears of inspiring students.

Herb CohenAthletic Director and Boys Basketball Coach

Herb Cohen began his coaching career in 1969. His overall record as 357 wins and 229 losses. He coached from 1969-1985 at Wood-Ridge and at Northern Highlands until 1992.

He started his coaching career at Wood-Ridge High School where he won Division Championships in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981. He won the State Sectional Championships in 1977, 1978 and 1979. The 1979 team won the Group One State Championship finishing with an overall record of 28-1. While he coached Basketball at Northern Highlands his teams won league Championships in 1988, 1989 and 1992.

Coach Cohen was named Coach of the Year in 1979, 1988 and 1992. He was the recipient of the Howard Bollerman Sr. Award, served as President of the Bergen County Coach’s Association and sat on the NJSIAA State Tournament Seating Committee.

In addition to coaching basketball at Wood-Ridge and Northern Highlands; coach was an assistant Football and Girls Volley Coach at Wood-Ridge and coached girls softball and soccer at Northern Highlands.

As an administrator he taught Spanish at both schools and later became the Athletic Director, the Dean of Students and was the Foreign Languages Supervisor at Northern Highlands.

Coach was known for his attention to detail on and off the court. He was known to be firm but fair and one who listed and cared about the young men and women he taught and coached. He used tough Love when it was needed. He respected his student and players and by doing so he earned their respect back. He was always there of the kids but never took any nonsense.

His teams will always be remembered as disciplined, well coached, hardworking and having a never quit attitude.

Coach was an institution in his own right above and beyond all of these accomplishments. He was loved by his family, his faculty, his students and of course his players. Herb Cohen died in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, and his children Jennifer and David

Dan Sullivan is being inducted into the NHRHS Hall of Fame Class of 2016 for his efforts and successes with the Northern Highlands Boys and Girls Tennis Teams.Dan took over the head coaching duties of boys tennis in 1980 and the girls team in 1991.

He led those teams to a combined total of 31 League, County, Sectional, and State Championships which ranks 2nd amongst NH coaches of all time. Coach Sullivan’s girls team won the 1993 NBIAL, County, and State Group 3 Championships. His boys teams won county and sectional championships in 1994 and 1995.

He has coached numerous state, county, and sectional championship players including 2014 NHRHS Hall of Fame inductee Phil Stolt. He was voted into the New Jersey State Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.Dan was a very well-liked and respected math teacher at Highlands until his retirement. Dan

and his wife Cathy have been married for 43 years and are the proud parents of two daughters; Cathy Ann and Erin. They have three grandchildren Logan (6), Julianna (4), and Molly (2).

Dan still plays tennis actively and when not playing, heads to the gym to stay fit and maintain good health.

Colonel Richard C. Jackson II Col Jackson enlisted in the Marine Corps from New Jersey in the Spring of 1982 after attending Cornell University. After Signals Intelligence training at Corry Station, Florida he was assigned to Company I, Marine Support Battalion, Naval Security Group Activity, Adak, Alaska. Accepted for the Enlisted Commissioning Education Program, he attended Officer Candidates School, The Basic School (TBS), and the Infantry Officers Course during 1986.

Col Jackson’s initial posting as a commissioned officer was to Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station where he served as a Platoon Commander with Lima Company, the 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander, followed by Executive Officer of Weapons Company, all with 3d Battalion, 3d Marine Regiment. While assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Brigade, he also served as the Officer in Charge of the Brigade Tactics School.

His follow-on tour was at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command where initially he served as the Infantry Platoon Commander and then the Weapons Platoon Commander of Enlisted-Instructor Company at TBS. His final duty before attending the Amphibious Warfare School was as a Staff Platoon Commander for Alpha Company. While at Quantico he also served as aide-de-camp for the Commanding General, Training and Education Command.

Col Jackson’s next three assignments were as the Commanding Officer of “Suicide Charley”, 1st Battalion, 7th Marines, and of Headquarters Company, 7th Marines; followed by duty as the commanding officer of Recruiting Station Kansas City.

Upon completion of the Army’s Command and General Staff College in 2001, Col Jackson was serving as the Senior Advisor to the 1st Brigade, Royal Saudi Marine Forces and Eastern Fleet, Jubail, Saudi Arabia when 9/11 occurred.

Col Jackson was next assigned to the Navy Warfare Development Command in Newport, Rhode Island as an Action Officer in the Doctrine Department. During this tour he also served as an Individual Augment at Camp Blue Diamond, Ramadi, Iraq as the Director, and then Assistant Director of the Iraqi Security Force Cell, G-3, 1st Marine Division.

While at Newport, Col Jackson attended Top Level School at the Naval War College (NWC). Following the NWC he assumed command of the Marine Corps’ Anti-Terrorism Battalion, 2d Marine Division.

Thereafter, he served as the Assistant Chief of Staff, United States Africa Command, Stuttgart, Germany followed by a tour as the Commanding Officer, Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia.

He recently completed a 2-year tour as Chief of Staff for Marine Forces Central Command (Forward) deployed to Bahrain in the Persian Gulf, followed by a 2-year tour as an Assistant Professor instructing Defense Strategy, Acquisition and Resourcing at the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy of the National War College.

Current assignment is as the Chief, Marine Forces Division, United States Military Training Mission, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Colonel Jackson is married to his high school sweetheart, the former Theresa Ward. They have four children, Caitlin, Leigh Anne, ‘Becca, and Bo.

Congratulations, Mike Michael Sean Blake (May 24, 1961 – September 23, 2008)

Following high school and college, Mike married his Northern Highlands high school sweetheart, Nancy. They have threefantastic children; Kyle (26), Amanda (24), and McKenna (21 soon). During his high school career #86 couldn’t have been more proud of the triumph he and his teammates accomplished– a State Football Championship. The win over arch enemy Pascack Hills was unforgettable and hard fought. Highlandshad lost to Hills earlier in that season in a game that included a halftime donnybrook between the Highlands faithful andthe Hills fans and one the record shows that Highlands was also victorious!! Who could forget the open house partyto celebrate their championship at #80, teammate Mike “Pes” Pesanello’s. In addition to football, Mike played basketball, where he brought a touch of football to the basketball court which helped to keep opponents cautious when going up for lay-ups or entering the paint, where Mike was usually waiting. He liked the annual golf team tryouts too, though arguably his golf game needed the most work!! After high school Mike went on to play football for Bloomsburg University where #86 was a 4-year starter and earned First Team Associated Press All American Honors as a tight-end in 1982, the year after being awarded honorable mention All American Honors, in 1981. He was a 3-time All-Conference 1st Team Selection. For his career, he caught 107 passesfor 1,387 yards. In 1995 Mike was inducted into the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame. If you ever wanted to get Mike talking on a quiet summer’s night one could simply ask Mike, “you had all those catches in college, how come Vinny (Calitri) didn’t throw you the ball more in high school?” :) Mike was the best of the best and we all miss him dearly.
