In a third-century settlement on the fringes of the Roman Empire a new wife is fascinated by a strange cult; in 1922 an artist begins his studies at the avant-garde Bauhaus in Weimar, Germany; and a young man uses his inheritance to establish a gay bookshop in 1980s London. In each place, a small coterie is closely connected and separated from the larger world. In each story, the larger world regards the small coterie and its passionately-held beliefs and secrets with suspicion and hostility.

The Emperor Waltz is a magnificent story of eccentricity, its struggle, its triumph, its influence – but also its defeat.

Philip Hensher is the author of nine novels, including the Booker-shortlisted The Northern Clemency, and Scenes from Early Life, which won the Ondaatje Prize in 2012.

John The Pupil recounts the journey taken from Oxford to Viterbo in 1267 by John and his two companions as they carry a secret burden to His Holiness Clement IV. As well as having to fight off ambushes from thieves hungry for the thing of power they are carrying, the holy trio are tried and tempted by all sorts of sins: ambition, pride, lust – and by the sheer hell and heaven of medieval life. Erudite and earthy, horrifying, comic, humane, David Flusfeder’s extraordinary novel reveals to the reader a world very different yet all too like the one we live in now.

David Flusfeder is the author of six novels, including Like Plastic, which won the Encore Prize for best second novel, and The Gift. He lives in South London with his family.

The Dog by Joseph O’NeillIn a New York City cloakroom, a luckless attorney bumps into an old college buddy. While Eddie Batros was once a chubby, pitiable Lebanese kid, the super wealthy 2007 version has the position of Batros Family Officer in his gift. Eager to escape a catastrophic relationship, the attorney agrees to relocate to Dubai. With fluency and subtle humour, Joseph O’Neill creates a brilliantly entertaining anti-hero, stricken by his endless powers of reason. Ultimately, The Dog asks whether a blameless life is a harmless one.

Joseph O’Neill was born in Ireland, grew up in Holland and lives in America. He is the author of This is the Life, The Breezes and Netherland, as well as a memoir, Blood-Dark Track. He has four children and lives in New York.

Stylish and camera-obsessed, Naomi and Nathan thrive on the yellow journalism of the social-media age. They are lovers and competitors – nomadic freelancers in pursuit of sensation and depravity, encountering each other only in airport hotels and browser windows. Their parallel narratives become entwined in a gripping, dreamlike plot that involves geopolitics, 3-D printing, North Korea, the Cannes Film Festival, cancer, and, in an incredible number of varieties, sex.

David Cronenberg’s many feature films include The Brood, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Naked Lunch, M. Butterfly, Crash, A History of Violence, and A Dangerous Method. His most recent film, Cosmopolis, starred Robert Pattinson and was an adaptation of Don DeLillo’s 2003 novel. Consumed is his first novel.

As the French Revolution and Napoleon’s rule confirmed the worst fears of Europe’s rulers, they saw their states as threatened by a sense of a great, ill-defined threat that has never since left. Adam Zamoyski’s timely and compelling history explores how the future was envisaged in a time of suppression, and how attempts to impose order were meant to assure it.

Adam Zamoyski’s books include the Sunday Times bestseller 1812: Napoleon’s Fatal March on Moscow, Warsaw 1920 and Chopin. He lives in London and is married to the painter Emma Sergeant.

Phantom Terror The Threat of Revolution in the Repression of Liberty 1789-1848 by Adam Zamoyski

A magnificent examination of the age of fear, subversion and espionage created when Europe’s governments tried to police the world against obscure forces seemingly intent on destroying civilisation.
