During the meeting, each parallel session facilitator will be responsible to appoint a rapporteur(s) for the session. The rapporteur(s) will be responsible for making brief notes of the key issues discussed and of the action points, following an online template that will be provided by the SSC Chair's Office.

To allow room for discussions covering topics that arise during the Leaders' Meeting, we will keep a daily list of topics suggested by participants, and then prioritize that list with the votes of all meeting participants daily. Based on the prioritization, the topics will be assigned into the time slots open for topics from the parking lot.

As participants probably understand, it is not possible to cover all the topics of interest of everyone participating during the meeting. Therefore, it is strongly suggested that topics that are too specific and that involve a relatively small number of participants, are independently discussed during meals and coffee breaks.

Objectives for the meeting

M. Share experiences on group leadership and management, to boost the network, deliver assessments, planning and action, and communicate progress.

G. Celebrate the volunteerism of the Chairs, to acknowledge their invaluable contribution to global species conservation and to inspire and encourage them to continue their vital work.H. Recognize the importance of successional planning, by being proactive in the cultivation of the next generation of SSC leaders, with an emphasis on diversification of backgrounds, particularly the representation of the developing world where most species diversity exists.

I. Address any equity issues with a view to ensuring every SSC leader feels fully supported regardless of their background.J. Increase visibility and public awareness of the work of SSC, its network and key partners, and our joint leadership in species conservation.

K. Produce a declaration of the SSC calling for a global effort to scale up conservation action for species as a shared responsibility, and for countries to adopt and implement a strong post 2020 global species target.L. Discuss improvements and updates in technical aspects of the work of SSC.

A. Build connections and strengthen relationships among SSC Leaders, as well as develop new collaborations with other IUCN Commissions, Programmes, Regional Offices, and Members.B. Explore how best to measure the effectiveness of SSC’s actions on biodiversity conservation and apply the outcomes of that process to improve and guide our future work, in the context of the IUCN Programme, the UN Global Biodiversity Targets and Sustainable Development Goals.

C. Identify major new initiatives needed to address critical conservation issues, particularly where SSC can mobilize its huge breadth of expertise to catalyze conservation action for species on the brink of extinction.D. Develop or improve skills of particular importance to leaders of volunteer networks.E. Consult on developing policies, guidelines and standards.F. Plan how SSC can be most effective on the policy front, including, e.g., how SSC can provide inputs, data and indicators to inform the global strategic planning on biodiversity.
