The Swandean Spitfire Special-27,OOO c.c. s, 'U'IOQR PI!O'IOCIU'H
Today's Meeting is the ninth in the series of post-war Speed Trials andits popularity continues, the entry for 1954 being higher than last year.
The 1948 Course Record for the Kilometre made by RaymondMays (B.R.A. supercharged) remains unbroken at 23.91 sees. or an aver-age speed of 93.75 m.p.h. To appreciate what this entails imag'ine anothercar crossing the Start Line at a speed of 93.75 m.p.h. and at the same timethe Record Holder is starting from a standstill; both cars would cross theFinish line together. Another record for the Ladies' Class made by Mrs. F.R. Gerard (E R.A. supercharged 1943 c.c.) in 1949 is still unbroken. SixClass Records were broken in 1953 but the records of V. J. Hern (Amilcar)Class 5, and the late J. G. Fry (Frekaiserwagen Special) Class 9 still stand.
In 1946 the event became International and the Course ex tended to aKilometre. The Starting System is similar to Traffic Lights, the "hockeysticks" being inserted under the wheels to detect a false start. By this systemthe cars are timed by electric eye to one hundredth of a second.
Some of the Drivers - Starting with the largest racing car that hasever competed at this event, we have F. M. Wilcock with the "SwandeanSpitfire Special" driven by a Supercharged 27,000 c.c, aircraft engine. Thecar has four-wheel drive and has been fitted with a new gear-box and othermodifications have considerably reduced the weight. We hope that the "teeth-ing troubles" of last year have been overcome and the car will really show itspaces Also in Class II are the Alta engined H.W.M.s driven by D. H.Gahagan, E. N. Whiteaway and R. Bowsber, and it will be interesting tocompare their performance with the Connaughts driven by R. R. C. Walker(2nd in Class 1953)and L. Marr. Ken Wharton has entered in Class 10and11 with the original Sprint E.R.A.(2000 C.e. supercharged) which holds the'Course Record when driven by Raymond Mays. Will history repeat itselfand this record, held since 1948,be broken? D. Wilkinson (2nd in Cars up to)500 c,c, 1953) and Tbe Lord Ebury have borh entered supercharged E.R A.sin Class 9. F. Sowry (Class Record holder) is competing again with theCooper J.A.P. in Class 8. The duel between Don Parker and A. E. Brown
14
in Class 7 may result with another Class Record broken. The increc-ed entryin Bentley Drivers Class will mean an even more impressive spectacle ontheir rerum en masse at the end of their Class. Class 6 will once again providethe annual contest between G. D. Parker (Class Record Holder 1953) with"Jaguara" and W. Coleman (Class Record Holder 1952) with "Jaguene".The long-standing Class Record of Sydney Allard in Class 4 may be challengedthis year by the D Type Jaguar driven by N. Dewis. Classes 1, 2 & 3 arewell supported with a representative selection of SPOrtS Cars.
THE TEAM AWARD-B. sn,M. C. (Cars) v. B.M.C.R.C. (M/c's)This is a new Trophy for competition annually between Cars v. Motorcycles :B. & H.M.C. Team-D. Wilkinson (E.R.A. s.), G. Parker (Jaguars s.) andF. M. Wilcock Swandean Spitfire s.) Reserve-The Lord Ebury (E.R.A. s.)B.M.C.R.C. Team-G. Brown (Vincent), F. J. Williams (Cotton J.A.P.) andP. Ferbrache (Hartley Ariel). Some of the Motor ..cycles and their DriversClass 12.
R. CHA.RL TON (Birmingham)-Riding one of the several 1000 c.c.Vincents entered here today, Mr. Charlton is a newcomer to Brighton. Hismachine was originally a "Black Shadow" model but has been tuned andconverted to "Lightning" specification and is now operating on coil ign ition.Extensive lightening has been carried out and ic"ishoped tha t this machinemay present some competition to George Brown's Vincent Special.
GEORGE BROWN (Stevenage)- There is very little new to say of this ..gentleman or his machine, which has had an almost incredible amount of ,success at Sprints, Hill Climbs and Road Race Meetings throughout thecountry. The machine (and its driver, of course), hold the record for the1000 c.c. class here at Brighton, at Shelsley, at Staverton, and in fact, atpractically every venue at which they have entered I
R. BARTON (Farnborough)-In the same class again is the J.A.P. enginedBrough-Superior ridden by Mr. Barton, who has gained first places atTrent Park, Stamford and Thruxtoa Sprint Meeting on this machine, which together with the second Brough (Vintage 1930) entered heretoday by D. PICKERING should provide an exciting spectacle.
B. E. KEYS (Worthing)-Mr. Keys has held the class record for 350 c.c.machines for the past three yean and has competed successfully on the348 c.c, Norton at Gatwick, Cirencester, etc., abd it is confidently expectedthat the machine will uphold its position in the lead again today:
P. FERBRA.CHE (Enfield)-Some competition may be expected for Mr.Keys' Norton from the 350 c.c J.A.P. engined machine ridden by PeterFerbrache, who is also entered on the 499 c.c. Hartley Ariel whichenabled him to gain third fastest time of the day at this meeting last year.
F. J. WILUAMS (Saltdesn)-has been riding motor cycles in the Brightonand Hove Motor Club's Speed Trials since 1927 and holds the 500 c.c.record for the Kilo on the Brighton front. The machine on which Frankbas won the 500 c.c. class for the past twO years is more or less home built, using a standard rigid Cotton Frame with girder forks. At the momentthe engine is a J.A.P. but this frame often houses a Blackburne enginemanufactured in 1927 for the T.T. races
R. A. BEECROFT (Wembley)-Anotber machine of great interest is the490 C.c. Norton ridden by Roy Beecroft. It is a Vintage machinemanufactured in 1928, with almost all its original parts still in use.Running on petrol, not "dope," it has put up a really creditableperformance over the years and took third place in its class at Brightonlast year.
E. A. WOODS (London}-will be riding his 348 c.c, Norton once again(he took second place in this class at the last Brighton event) and inaddition has entered a 499 c.c. Morgan Three Wheeler. This is apparentlypowered by a Rudge o.h.v, engine of his own design and it will beinteresting to see what competition it will give to the other Sidecarmachines entered today ridden by R. TOUCHE (Vincent 998 c.c.) andJ. T. TERRY'S 495 c.c. Velocette and "chair" which will be ridden byL. W. H. COLLINS.

THE 2 LITRE SPORTS CLASS I I I
is steadily becoming more popular with club members
who use their cars for daily transport as well as amateur
competition and there are those enthusiasts who believe
that this size of vehicle is ideal for the congested English
roads having the virtues of rapid acceleration and smallsize coupled with reasonable petrol economy and longlife.
One of the most interesting entries in this class
is the A.C. "Ace" entered byK.N. Rudd who is driving
his car in its first speed trial today.
Those of us who well remember the outstandingsuccess of the A.C. in obtaining world speed andeconomy records between the wars will watch this four-wheel independently sprung newcomer with particuJarinterest and it will undoubtly carry the good wishes ofall those interested in supporting the small producer ofquality hand made vehicles for which A.C. have beenjustly famous for over 40 years.
