4th Sunday of Advent

This year the Fourth Week of Advent is the longest it ever is. A full week. Saturday evening is Christmas Eve and next Sunday, Christmas.

Perhaps we can use these days to try to heighten our awareness of whatever is going on in our lives these days, and how that can bring us to Christmas. Some examples might help.

So many of us experience the ironic reality that Christmas can be the most lonely time of our lives. Some of these “mixed feelings” or “sad feelings” are difficult to recognize or name.

For some of us, the Christmas we will celebrate this year pales in comparison to wonderful Christmases of our past - perhaps because we were younger or more “innocent” then, perhaps because some of our loved ones who were central to our Christmas are no longer living or not where I am, perhaps because the burdens and struggles of my life or the changes in our world and the war have robbed this Christmas of something that was there before.

For some of us, Christmas will be just another day. Unable to get out to go to church to be with a faith community, and without family or friends to be with, Christmas will be a day we are tempted to ignore.

For some of us, Christmas inevitably means family conflicts. Facing the days ahead, whether it be the last few remain-ing parties, or conflicting demands of family and friends, or the friend or relative who drinks too much, or the experi-ence I'm having that I drink too much and this season is an easy excuse.

For some of us, Christmas challenges us with terrible financial burdens. Children today become victims of the gross commercial exploitation of the day. For those of us struggling to make ends meet on a day to day basis, feeling the cul-tural pressure of buying for our children things which we can't afford, can lead us to put more debt on the credit card in ways that simply push us further and further behind.

Some of us, might be really looking forward to Christmas, and not be aware of these struggles with Christmas, yet feel that, in spite of our best efforts to make Advent different this year, there is still something missing, and we still feel un-ready for Christmas.

For all of us, the story behind these days can draw us in, and invite us to bring our lives to the mystery of how Jesus came into this world and why. Our best preparation for the Holy Night ahead and the Joyful Morning to follow is for us to reflect upon how he came. He came in the midst of scandal and conflict. He came in poverty. He was rejected be-fore he was born. He was born in a feed trough. He was hunted down. And he grew up in obscurity.

He did not shun our world and its poverty and conflict. He embraced it. And he desires to embrace us today, in this day. Right where we are. Right where we are feeling most distant. Right were we are feeling least “religious” or “ready.” If we let him come into our hearts to be our Savior these challenging days, we will find ourselves entering the sacred night and morning of Christmas “joyful and triumphant” as never before.

Come, Lord Jesus. Come and visit your people. We await your coming. Come, O Lord. (from Creighton University ‘Online Ministries Praying Advent’)

SV Stewardship Corner

“MY DEAR CHILDREN, LOVE ONE ANOTHER.” These are the words our divided nation needs to follow for a calm Christmas and a peaceful new year. They are the words constantly preached by St. John the Apostle and Evangelist in his Gospel and epistles. His is the window to find this week. (see the brass id plate under the window.)

John was the beloved youngest Apostle and the only apostle to stand at the cross of our dying Jesus. From the cross, Christ entrusted his Blessed Mother into John’s care: “son, behold thy mother; mother, be-hold thy son.” After Christ’s Ascension, John performed many miracles in Jesus’ name and so many were baptized into Christianity that John had to establish many churches in Asia Minor to accommodate them. His visions of heaven are recorded in the Apocalypse of the New Testa-ment. (See his bio in vestibule.)

The next time you see an icicle and begin to shudder at the thought of winter, take another look at that icicle and think about this....

THE LEGEND OF THE ICICLE

One beautiful night very long ago, The Savior was born in a winter snow.

The angels in heaven looked down on His birth, as their tears of happiness fell to the earth.

God wanted a reminder of the love He brings and the joyful tears at the birth of our King.

So He caught their tears In His powerful hands, and spread them as crystals across the land.

So as a special reminder for all to see, we see icicles form for you and me.

The Quarterly Quilt Raffle Winner is Carol Gildehaus of Augusta. Congratulations!

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had command-ed him and took his wife into his home.” (Matthew 1:24)

Putting our complete trust in the Lord with out expecting any-thing in return. Striving to put God first in all things and follow Him wherever He may led us. As we prepare for the birth of our Lord, pray for the strength and courage to be a model of disci-pleship, just as Joseph was.

SAVE THE DATE: Ladies of IC and SV, mark your calendars for March 25, 2017 and plan to attend the 8th Annual Catholic Women for Christ Conference. Several ladies from IC attended last year and are anxious to return in 2017. It is an uplifting event - hundreds of women joined together by Faith, all wishing to build a dynamic

relationship with Jesus Christ, rooted in spiritu-ality and personal pray-er; to grow in their per-sonal dignity as Catholic Women; and to strengthen their commit-

ment to be a disciple of Christ to all people. Understand this is a long way off, but we are all so busy with our lives that we need to schedule some time for our own growth. More information will follow as the time gets closer. Truly consider this event, it is amazing!

Dynamic Catholic, Alive! – Betrothal of Mary and Joseph Was Mary really an “unwed mother”? As Matthew makes clear in today’s Gospel, the answer is clearly no—Mary and Joseph were really “betrothed,” she was his wife, and Joseph was really con-templating divorce. Marriage customs were such that the last stage of the marriage was that the betrothed came together to live as husband and wife. The Annunciation—and the Incarnation of Jesus—take place after betrothal but before they lived together. What would you have done if you were Joseph? (CCC 437, 488, 1846) archstl.org/dynamic
