CurrentThreat Target . Target is a Malnourished Southwest

Asian or Middle Eastern male.

. Definition of "malnourished" is aBody Mass Index (BMI) < 20.Chakrabarty's" 5th PercentileIndian Male" BMI = 17.8

Taliban Terrorists

. Target "thickness" dimensions of the5th percentile from Chakrabortyare:-Chest: 186 mm (7.32 inch).-Waist: 191mm (7.52 inch).

. In contrast, the average Americansoldier is 10 inches "thick".

NOTE: Average threat anatomy since11 September 2001.

Failure of M855 to yaw orfragment within tissue resultsin relatively insignificantwounds, similar to thoseproduced by .22 long riflebullets. This can be caused by:

Reduced impact velocities whenthe range increases or when firedfrom short barrel weapons.

When the bullet passes throughonly minimal tissue, such as alimb or the chest of a thin, malnourished individual.

Manufacturing variations in thecomposition, thickness, andrelative weights of the jackets, penetrators, and cores, as well asthe types and position of thecannelures.

Some lots of M855 travelup to 7 inches before

beginning to yaw and willhave already exited the

body before yaw orfragmentation occurs.

Unfortunately, withdecreased wounding effects,

rapid incapacitation isunlikely and enemy soldiers

may continue to pose a threat
