This year's University Place School District Teacher of the Year Award was presented to Curtis High School math teacher and depart-ment chair Nadine Sangston, according to Eric Brubaker, her principal. "Mrs. Sangs-ton is extremely deserving of this honor," said Brubaker. "She pushes each one of her students to excel while providing a level of in-dividual support that builds relationship with each student. She is a master at using forma-tive assessment to adapt her lesson plans to meet student needs. Her work as a building and district leader in math has benefitted the district for the last seven or eight years. It is no coincidence that the high school's math scores increased during that same time."

A teacher for 28 years, Sangston earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics edu-

cation from Western Washington Univer-sity, and her masters from the University of Washington. She also received certification in computer science through Pacific Lutheran University.

UPSD's stellar reputation brought her here from the Franklin Pierce district six years ago. “Since I’ve come to UP, I have been pushed professionally—not just teaching kids, but sharing knowledge with other profession-als," said Sangston, who credits the teaching environment with drastically improving her growth. "Working in teacher trainings like the Math: Getting It Project, the spring institute, and the summer institute is where you really become more aware of what you’re doing in the classroom, getting edified and praised for the positives. It's a terrific place to teach."
