Event information guide Welcome Well done you! You have entered the fifth Doonbank Trofee Cyclocross in Ayr, hosted by Ayr Burners Cycling. We’ve prepared this guide to help you plan for and enjoy your day. We’ve also prepared it so that we know what we are meant to be doing…

What? The ‘Doonbank Trofee’ is a day of cyclocross fun for all ages. We have access to a lovely scenic park close to the centre of the town.

We have three competitions taking place: • Round 1 of the Super Quaich Series, for everyone over 16• The Scottish Cycling South West CX Champs for riders from eligible clubs• The Doonbank Trofee Youth Races, for everyone age 12 to 16

Typically a winter discipline, cyclocross sees competitors charge around an off-road circuit for anything up to an hour, looking for the fastest way to overcome obstacles including hurdles, sand, mud and deeper mud. This should, and will, involve a bit of running. The Super Quaich Now in its fourth year, the Super Quaich is a five-race series across December and January. The primary aim is to “maximise and extend the thrill of racing throughout all ability levels.” We want as many riders as possible to have a rider just ahead of them and a rider chasing them close behind. When this happens every rider gets a racing experience. Visit www.superquaich.cx for all the relevant rules on points etc.

Scottish Cycling South West CX Championships The Doonbank Trofee will host the SCSW Cyclocross Championships, open to all riders from registered clubs. There are two categories, for male and female. Based on the way the A and B race splits fall, the ‘A’ race will host the male championship and the ‘B’ race will feature the female championship.

The Doonbank Trofee races are supported by the members, friends and supporters of Ayr Burners Cycling QTS.

Why? Ayr Burners Cycling is Ayrshire’s fastest growing cycling community. Our aims are to promote cycling opportunities across Ayrshire and encourage cyclists to visit Ayrshire.

We love cyclocross as an accessible, family friendly discipline of cycle sport, taking place in secure off-road environments, not requiring specific technical skills to participate, and allowing cyclists of a wide range of ages and abilities to ride together.

Ayr Burners Cycling are grateful to South Ayrshire Council for providing permission to use the popular Rozelle Park. We are excited to welcome cross fans from across Scotland to enjoy our particular local brand of mud.

Where? The Doonbank Trofee takes place at Rozelle Park in Ayr. We have access to changing facilities including showers at the venue.

Strip Address: Rozelle Park, Monument Road Ayr, KA7 4NQ

Car Parking Parking at the site is VERY limited and will be carefully marshalled. There is nearby on- street parking on ‘Laughlanglen Road' and 'The Loaning’ (KA7 4QL) that we encourage participants to use. This will be signposted from the Southbound A77.

Rozelle Park is in a prime location close to the centre of Ayr. The park’s origins come from Rum money, involving all the historical crimes of sugar plantation of La Rochelle, Jamaica. It is popular with the public and dog walkers especially, so please show due care and consideration when preparing for your race.

The course has been substantially updated for the fifth edition, with a new, tarmac start/finish. Much of the course takes place on an old pitch-and-putt course with some quality banking. The course is soft underfoot and we expect the north-east corner to chew-up substantially as the day goes on. In the main section of the park our course deliberately hugs the tree line in order to minimise the visual disturbance to the park. Like all the best parks, Rozelle gets a bit soggy during the winter. We therefore ask riders to warm up on tarmac or the actual course itself to avoid damage to the grass elsewhere.

How? Registering The Super Quaich events have fully sold out so no on-the-day entry will be accepted. Riders should go to race sign-on before their event to collect their number and timing chip on presentation of a valid BC membership card. The timing chips have been hired specially for the event and are expensive, so please make sure to return yours after the event.

The Under 12 ‘Fun-Ride’ is a free, enter-on-the-day event aimed at attracting local participants. This is a non-competitive, 20minute activity on a short circuit with a prize for all participants.

British Cycling Technical Regulations: The DoonBank Trofee races are run under the regulations of British Cycling. A handpicked selection of relevant Cyclo Cross event rules from British Cycling’s Technical Regulations appear below:

10. EQUIPMENT PITS 10.1 The equipment pit is that part of the circuit where riders can change wheels or bicycles, or receive mechanical

assistance. Servicing and the changing of bicycles will only be allowed in these pits. Any rider passing the yellow flag marking the exit of the pit area must continue on the course until reaching the next pit area. The provision of equipment pits is obligatory in all races except those for under 12s and those promoted under the Go-Cross category.

10.2 In category C races a minimum of one and a maximum of two pit areas shall be provided. In category B races and above two single pits, or one double pit as defined in regulation 10.4, shall be provided. Equipment pits shall be judiciously located adjacent to the course, in places where speeds are not high, but not on stony or downhill stretches. They shall be free of artificial obstacles. In category B events and above the race lane and the pit lane shall be separated and distinctly marked out by tape or barriers.

10.3 Movement is permitted between pit areas, but at no time must a pit attendant obstruct riders while changing pit areas.

10.4 If, during each lap, riders pass two points sufficiently close to each other, just one pit - known as a double pit - may be set up at that point, provided that it meets the conditions set forth in article 10.2.

10.5 Pits shall be straight and in clearly defined areas. They should be signposted and precisely marked by yellow flags located at the beginning and the end of the separation between the race and pit lanes.

10.6 At the side of the pit area a zone at least 2 metres deep shall be set aside for riders’ assistants and their equipment. 10.7 A rider may only take the pit lane with the intention of changing a bicycle or wheel, or receiving mechanical

assistance. Access shall be provided for riders’ assistants only on one side of the pit lane12.10

11. CONDUCT OF COMPETITORS 11.1 Where practicable, thirty minutes should be allowed before the start of events (other than those for under 12s)

for on-course inspection and training by the respective riders. 11.2 All races shall be started by an audible signal from a point not visible to competitors. No indication shall be

given to competitors of the passing of seconds immediately before the start. 11.3 Riders found to be causing false starts shall be penalised at the discretion of the Commissaire. The method of

stopping a false start shall be defined by the start official during any pre-race instructions. 11.4 Riders shall start with the front wheel behind the line and with at least one foot on the ground. 11.5 Riders shall not receive assistance at the start, or during the event, other than under the provisions of regulation

10. The handing up of refreshment is forbidden. 11.6 Any rider deliberately leaving the course shall be deemed to have retired from the event. 11.7 No competitor shall cover any part of the course without his machine. 11.8 When being lapped or overtaken by a faster rider from another category, the rider being overtaken should be

prepared to surrender the racing line. 11.9 All competitors, whilst training or racing on the course, shall wear properly shall wear properly affixed protective

headgear which must be of a hard/soft shell construction. The responsibility for ensuring that the protective headgear is of a standard sufficient to provide adequate protection in the case of an accident whilst training or racing on the course shall lie solely with the competitor. NB: advice on helmet standards may be found in the note appended to BCF general technical regulation 8.6.

11.10 No member of the Federation other than those competing or officiating shall be permitted to ride on a course whilst a race is in progress.

11.11 The first three riders wherever practicable shall receive their awards directly after the event has finished and adjacent to the finishing area.
