So how much do you know about one of the largest tribal communities of the world: the Gonds?The Gonds are Dravidian people scattered over Madhya Pradesh, Eastern Maharashtra (Vidarbha), Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Western Odisha. The word Gond comes from Kond, which means green mountains in the Dravidian idiom. The prime language used by them is Gondi but they also have command over Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Parsi and many other Dravidian languages.

1. Gond people featured in The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling

A Gondi hunter is one of the victims of “The King’s Ankus” and a Gondi diviner advises the local villager that their village is completely lost and they should just move somewhere else.

2. Gonds are descendants of Ravana

The explanation appears to be that the Hindus considered the Gonds to have been the enemy encountered by Rama and his group in the Aryan expedition.

3. Gonds have numbered their Gods.

Gonds have 9 groups of Gods numbered from 1 to 7, 12 and 16. Members belonging to the lineage of the even-numbered group of Gods were permitted to marry only those belonging to odd-numbered groups.

4. Gonds have a list of uncanny myths.

One Gond myth tells about a great flood from which a brother and sister alone survived who then became the progenitors of the current human race. Another myth suggests how Earth and sky fell in love and the ‘Creator’ agreed to celebrate their wedding.

5. Widow women are remarried to their grandsons!

There are no widows in the Gond tribe as they follow the tradition of remarrying them so that the woman does not have to face the evils and the bad circumstances of the society.
