Give food, shelter, and clothing. Isaiah tells this to God’s

people. The long captivity in Babylon is ending. They are returning home. They are invited to do mercy works. Later, Jesus tells his disciples to be salt and light. What Isaiah tells the First People of the Covenant and Jesus tells his followers—is told to us today.

How will I be merciful? What do I have that I can give to another?

How will I be salt? How will I be a flavorful follower, a zesty disciple of Christ the Lord?

How will I act in the light of day? How will those acts give glory to God?

The View from 40th & Wilson FR. CHRIS ROUECH [email protected]

THIS WEEK’S NOTES:

On the calendar: You might

notice that the last of the Christmas poinsettias have been removed from our sanctuary. That’s because they were fading — and because last Thursday the Church marked the last echo of Christmas 2016. Each year, Feb. 2 is The Presentation of the Lord. This feast celebrates when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus at the temple 40 days after his birth. In Italy, many Catholic churches leave up their crèche and other decorations until Feb. 2.

Behind the scenes, the Church is preparing for Lent (Ash Wednesday is March 1). But the three remaining

Sundays of Winter Ordinary Time feature some very hard-hitting scripture passages at Mass.

We continue to make our way through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount in chapters 5-7 of Matthew’s gospel. As you will see, God’s Living Word stands in sharp contrast to many other messages we are hearing these days.

Parish App — Do you use an IPhone

or an Android phone? The best thing you can do for your soul is to turn it off for a few hours each day. The next best thing you can do is download our new Parish App. The application has convenient links to the Mass readings for each day, a plethora of prayers and updates about life in our parish.

I am happy to announce that Father Andrew Kolenda, LC, will be the main celebrant at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Feb. 12. Father Andrew was ordained a priest in Rome last Dec. 10. He is celebrating Mass at St. Pius X because his parents, Don and Julie Kolenda, are parishioners here. In fact, when the

Kolenda family attends Mass together, they fill an entire pew. Along with his parents, his brother, Jonathan, and his sisters Claire, Bridget, Emily and Jennifer are members

with his niece, Karianna.

Father Kolenda was born and raised in Grand Rapids, until he joined the high-school seminary of the Legionaries of Christ in 1996 when he was 13 years old. After graduation, he entered the novitiate of the Legionaries, and then took his first vows. He studied classical humanities, Philosophy, and Theology at the Legionary seminary first in Connecticut, then in Rome, Italy. He took his final vows in 2008. He has worked in boys’ clubs, in secretarial work, fundraising, and administration during his years of formation. Currently he is

administrator, confessor, and spiritual director at the high-school seminary of the Legionaries in Rolling Prairie, IN. Although Father Kolenda and I are both priests, our vocations are different because he belongs to a religious order, whereas I am a diocesan priest. Father Kolenda made vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to the Legionaries of Christ. Founded in 1941, this congregation of priests and seminarians is part of the Regnum Christi Movement. It is present in 21 countries, meaning Father Kolenda could be sent to any of these countries. Diocesan priests make promises of obedience to their bishop and his successors, meaning they generally serve in their own diocese throughout their years of active ministry. One way to tell religious order priests apart from diocesan priests is that order priests have letters following their last name to identify their religious congregation. As a parish, let us extend a

warm and prayerful welcome to

Father Andrew as he celebrates Mass

with us next Sunday. If you are interested in seeing photo-

graphs from the ordination, google or

PARISHIONER AND LECTOR Helena Signore, a second grade

teacher at Holy Trinity School in Comstock Park, has just published a book on the Real Presence for children. Helena could not find a book like this for children so she wrote and illustrated one.

The book will be available soon at Bishop Baraga Bookstore and The Rosary Gift and Book Shoppe on 28th St. It is also available online from the publisher, WestBow Press, westbowpress.com, amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com. It is called: I am: The Mystery of the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist for Children.

Knights of Columbus

CORN HOLE LEAGUE: Are you looking for a way to bring spring-

time feeling into your week? We will begin a corn hole league on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7pm. Bring a partner, or come alone and find

a teammate that night. Membership in the Knights is not a requirement to play and spouses are welcome to join. Other league nights are March 23, April 20, and May 18.

CHILI COOK OFF will take place on Saturday, Feb. 18 after the

5:30pm Mass. Signup this weekend after Mass!

If you are interested in becoming a Knight, please contact Jason Bargenquast at 269-217-7485 for more information. Membership is a great way to serve your parish community with the company of other Catholic men!

STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: In this weekend’s readings and

psalm, the prevailing theme is that of light. We are the light of the

world: our light breaks forth like the dawn: our light shines in the

darkness; our light reflects generosity and justice. Good stewards

know they are the lamp, and Christ is the flame that, through them,

illuminates the earth. They know that they carry Christ’s light in their

hearts, and let it shine through their words and deeds. What are we

doing to shine Christ’s light on the hungry, the homeless and others

most in need of God’s mercy? How do we exercise good stewardship

over the light of Christ that burns within each of us? from the ICSC

THANK YOU’S...to all those who brought food and showed up to last Saturday’s Euchre Night! We had some great soups, snacks, desserts, and a lot of laughter, smiles, and fun. Mike Morse was the big winner of the night. Thank you to the members of the Community Commission for making the night possible and special thanks to Don Hebeler and Chuck Burch. ON BEHALF OF MY MOTHER, Mary Lorraine Sager, I would like to thank you for the beautiful cream colored prayer shawl she re-ceived a few months ago made by Georgianne Everhart. Mom is a new resident of Medilodge and a devout “cradle” Catholic. We would also like to thank all of the parishioners that have taken time out of their busy schedules to come and provide communion. She truly appreci-ates the attention your parish has provided! God Bless! Janice Sager

DONUT HELP NEEDED: We are looking for families and individuals

to help with our Donut Sunday hospitality and make sure it continues.

It’s a great way to get involved and get to know people in the parish.

If interested, or have questions, contact Sue VanGessel at

DIOCESAN PUBLICATIONS REPRESENTATIVE, Deb Myers, will

be in this week seeking new and renewing present parish bulletin ads. If you are interested in advertising, please call the parish office for contact information. This is an excellent opportunity for local businesses to increase their visibility in the community. Advertising in the bulletin allows this publication to be printed each week at no cost to the parish.
