Star Wars

Electronic Arts signed a 10-year deal with Disney in 2013 for exclusive video game rights to the Star Wars universe. Since the deal, EA has scored hits with Star Wars Battlefront and mobile game Galaxy of Heroes.

A sequel to Battlefront is set to debut later this year, and the publisher has two more games announced in the Star Wars universe and other unannounced projects in the works.

Battlefield

Battlefield is one of EA’s most profitable franchises. Its most recent installment, Battlefield 1, was the second-best-selling game in 2016 in America and a major win for the publisher in the first-person-shooter category.

The next entry in the Battlefield series won’t arrive until 2018 at the earliest, but Battlefield 1 will be supported with paid-DLC updates, and EA is looking into other ways to generate ongoing digital sales from the franchise.

FIFA

The FIFA series has sold over 150 million copies, and its releases are dependable chart-toppers. They’ve also been getting more profitable in recent years thanks to the addition of the Ultimate Team trading card game.

Between versions in FIFA and Madden, Ultimate Team game modes generated more than $650 million in high-margin sales for EA in the company’s last fiscal year.

EA’s Madden NFL franchise faces little competition and puts up great sales. The company typically revamps the game every five years or so and focuses on new modes and roster updates in the intervening years, so development costs are kept low outside of the NFL license expense.

Madden NFL

With the exception of FIFA, Madden is EA’s biggest driver of in-game digital content sales.

Engagement for the series’ Ultimate Team mode is still growing at a double-digit clip -- making franchise releases more profitable.

Need for Speed

Need for Speed is one of EA’s longest-running franchises and has sold over 150 million copies. A mainline sequel is expected to debut this year, and the company is also working on a free-to-play entry.

EA helped bring Need for Speed to the big screen with a 2014 film adaptation, and the company is developing a sequel with Viacom’s Paramount Pictures and a group of Chinese partners.
