Those with an IQ “taller than average” took their chances at getting into Mensa as they at-tended a testing session on Sat-urday. Mensa is open to anybody who scores in the top two percent in a fluid intelligence test. Judith Tuckwell, testing co-ordinator for Nelson, says she always noticed she had to “edit” her conversations heavily be-

fore joining Mensa in the late 1960s. “When I joined Mensa I discovered that, when I am enthusiastic about something, I can overwhelm other people. When I was actually in a Mensa group I suddenly realised that I could say exactly what I liked and I would get a response that I had only dreamt of getting be-fore. It’s a bit like a horse being let out of a stable going for a gal-lop, and I can just go for it.” Judith, now in her 70s, was the

known in Nelson. There is no re-quirement to join Mensa other than scoring in the top two percent of an IQ test. Darren Stevenson is the second Nelson member, joining nine years ago in his 30s. He says there were around 20 members in the city at the time. “I joined after Testina-

tion, a TV series about IQ. I re-alised I was a bit smarter than I thought I was, so then I did the Mensa test. For me, you can walk into a room and you’re accepted. It’s such a wide spectrum of people who have language skills, music skills, a whole range of things.” For more information see www.mensa.org.nz or contact Judith on 0210 4036 7998.

POACHERS: Police are inves-tigating the discovery of two cattle carcasses on a forestry track in the Dovedale area. The bodies of two Friesian-cross yearlings were found af-ter the weekend on the north side of Jacob’s Ladder on the Thorpe-Orinoco Rd.

SNOW: Snow is already fall-ing at Rainbow Ski Area with 10cm at the top of the hill, and marketing and events coor-dinator Georgie Tudor-Jones says it’s sticking around.“Last year, we had no snow in April and only a little bit in May, so it is a definite good

sign for the season.” The ski area is due to open on July 4.

BUSINESS TO PROMOTE CONCERTS: A new business venture has been launched in the hope of bringing live inter-national music acts to Nelson.Showcase Nelson was origi-nated by Nelson business consultant Stu Allan, who proposed an annual event, commencing in February 2016. Suggested music artists include Annie Lennox, Mark Knopfler, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, Van Morrison, Bryan Ferry and Simply Red.

MOULDY PEACHES: A Nel-son mother was “disgusted” to find a can of peaches that her daughter opened for dessert were so mouldy it was just a green mess. Kayla Heath says the can was purchased just weeks earlier and did not have an expiry date printed on it.

Trafalgar Centre to open in nine monthsJessie Johnston

Getting the doors to the refur-bished Trafalgar Centre open by the February 2016 deadline will be the “single biggest chal-lenge” for newly-appointed contractor, Gibbons Construc-tion.Gibbons, along with Downer, have been awarded the con-tract to bring the city’s major events centre up to standard, after it was closed in late 2013.Gibbons’ chief operations of-ficer, Shane Trench, says he’s pleased they’ve been appointed

early in the design process, but admits getting the centre open on time will be the “single big-gest challenge”. “It obviously depends a little bit on the design. But Downer and Gibbons bring two heavily-re-sourced companies to the table, which means that if we need to, we can ramp up the project and accelerate it to ensure we get there for February.” The council closed the Trafal-gar Centre in December 2013 on advice that the building’s low earthquake ratings could leave it liable in the event of a

major quake. The first design work for the centre is due in July.Shane says Gibbons were thrilled to be picked from the tender process because the project is of “huge significance” to the region.Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says she was pleased a local firm was awarded the contract. “We have real construction tal-ent in our city and it’s good to see a local firm competing and winning a tender in competi-tion with major New Zealand and international firms.”

The Pride of New Zealand awards are back, so it’s time for you to nominate Nelsonians who you feel deserve to be recognized. In the inaugural awards last year Nel-son picked up three regional awards. Nationally, more than 700 individuals were nominated for their extraordinary personal sacrifices to help, save and care for others and their environment.Award nominations opened yesterday and will remain so until 14 June, with regional award ceremonies taking place in August followed by the prestigious national Pride of New Zealand Awards ceremony in September.

There will be six award categories, in-cluding honouring acts of bravery or heroism, community spirit, fundraising efforts and those involved with emer-gency services. New Zealanders of any age are eligible to be nominated. TSB Bank is again the major sponsor, along with NZME’s New Zealand Her-ald and radio station The Hits. Nelson Weekly is the regional partner for Nel-son.Visit www.prideofnzawards.co.nz for further details or to nominate. The Pride of New Zealand Awards can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Couple wins LA tripByron and Kaz Carr were already excited about flying to Auckland to meet their new-born nephew when they were given a white bag as part of Air New Zealand’s 75 birthday celebrations. After a quick game of “It’s in the Bag” with the air hostess, the Tahunanui couple were celebrating free flights to LA.“It was crazy,” says Kaz. “We were given the option of air-points or the prize in the bag and the whole plane was say-ing ‘bag, bag, bag’. We opened the bag and it was flights to LA, we couldn’t believe it.”Kaz and Byron were one of

four people to play the game on the Nelson to Auckland flight last week. One person took the airpoints and two others won trips, one to Ha-waii and the other Texas.Kaz says when she saw the cameramen come onto the plane she knew something was up. “I saw the promo-tion on Air New Zealand’s Facebook page but I never thought they’d do it on a flight from Nelson.”She says when they got off the plane other passengers were congratulating them. “It was surreal, we’re so excited about going to LA.”

Another frightening accident on one of Queen Street’s courtesy crossings has again raised concerns about the safety of the crossings, with a nearby retailer saying it’s only a matter of time before a pedestrian is seriously injured.Richmond’s Tracy Mahon suffered a broken ankle when she was hit and run over by a car on the courtesy crossing near Sundial Square on April 23. It was the second serious incident on the crossing in the last three years after a 10-year-old schoolboy was hit and pinned underneath a car in September 2012.“I was three-quarters of the way across the crossing and the car hit me in the hip and knocked me backwards,” Tracy, who works at the ANZ Bank, says. “I tried to get up but my foot was trapped under the wheel.“I was screaming really loud but I don’t think the driver heard me - he was an old guy and I think he was in shock. Then, after what seemed like forever, he drove forward, but he did it suddenly and the tyre jerked my foot.“I didn’t hear anything crack because I was screaming so loudly, but I knew it was broken. I’m a bit claustrophobic too so it

was really scary being trapped - I’m still seeing visions of it now.”Tracy uses the crossing daily as she walks to work, and usually goes home for lunch and says she has always had concerns about its safety. She says many drivers and pedestrians are uncertain about the rules relating to courtesy crossings and that creates confusion, increasing the risk of accidents.“The courtesy crossings might have been okay 10 or 15 years ago, but Richmond has got so big. There are so many cars and people on Queen St now they need to make the crossings safer.”The New Zealand Road Code states that drivers and pedestrians using courtesy crossings should treat each other with polite, respectful consideration. However, it makes it clear that “drivers are not obliged to stop at courtesy crossings” and says pedestrians need to cross them carefully.Warren Ludemann, who owns Made For Men directly opposite the crossing, says it is the second accident he has seen there and something needs to be done to make it safer. He says courtesy crossings are confusing and there needs to be signage erected to make it clear that pedestrians have to give way to traffic.

Holiday makers will be able to enjoy brand new facilities next summer with stage two of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve redevelopment underway.Stage two of the redevelopment has commenced with the old store being demolished. “Over the years, the board has looked at health and safety issues as well as the experience of coming to Kaiteriteri, along with the use of the land and assets, and decided to redevelop. “We hope that people will enjoy it more and the changes will tidy up the flow of traffic and bring people together in one central area,” says Chris

Hawkes, chairman of the Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board. The land for the new Kaiteriteri store has been dug out and filled, making way for the foundations to be laid. The plans involve a new general store located on a similar footprint to the old store with around eight motel units above.

The area between the store and the cafe out to the road will also be developed, with a pedestrian-only courtyard at the same level as the existing cafe deck. Tourism concession booths will be situated in this area in addition to outside furniture. The petrol pumps will be relocated to the back of the new carpark and there are also some changes to the cafe to facilitate service into the courtyard. The surrounding area will also receive a makeover, with grounds around the lagoon developed and a boardwalk constructed. The rebuild is due to be finished by November this year.

Nelson’s deadline to spend its $26 million of “R funding” has been ex-tended, but two major projects are ready to start as soon as next year, says the chair of the Nelson Re-gional Land Transport Committee.Eric Davy says the $7.1 million up-grade of the Rai Saddle and the $3.1 million upgrade of the Quarantine Rd roundabout could start next year.“They are both locked in as priori-ties and are very important to road safety in Nelson. Especially the Rai Saddle project, we have far too many accidents on that road.”The Rai Saddle project will see one curve on the Nelson side of the sad-dle taken out and the road widened and straightened. The Quarantine Rd project will see a major upgrade of the current in-tersection.The third major project earmarked for money from the government-allocated R fund was the Rocks Rd promenade. It is that project that has sparked the extension of the R-funding deadline. That’s because if the gov-ernment investigation into the

Southern Link shows that the new road should be built it will change the rules for the Rocks Rd upgrade. Eric says, if the Southern Link was built then Rocks Rd would no longer be a state highway and the proposed boulevard could be much wider and done for far cheaper.“If the Southern Link may proceed then we might be able to do the boulevard at far less cost and much bigger.“[This decision] gives us time to breath, we don’t have to commit to a project that we may not have to proceed with. We’re very happy with the extension. It gives us the ability to make sure what we’re do-ing is the best that we can for the region.”Other projects completed with R-funding money include the cycle-ways in Victory and Tahunanui. The new date that the money must be spent by is June 20, 2021. Origi-nally the deadline was June 30, 2018.

Organiser Marcia Higgs invites families to enjoy the fun and educational Littlies Day Out and Parenting Fair on Saturday. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

The Littlies Day out and Parenting Fair isn’t just about having fun, orgainsers hope it will help strengthen relationships within the community. The event is all about linking parents and caregivers of under fives with organisations and services that will benefit the wellbeing of all families. “It’s a fun day, it’s an educational day, it’s a chance to network, chance to ask questions, and it’s a chance to know who’s out there working in your community, because often people feel isolated

and they don’t always know who to contact,” says organiser Marcia Higgs. The day out will feature 27 organisations, plus a number of activities for children and adults. Entertainment from Kath Bee, Fairy Lou and Frozen’s Elsa will also make for a great day out, along with some good food. Organisers invite people to give a gold coin donation to the event, which will be held on Saturday 9 from 11am until 3pm at the Victory Community Centre. Don’t be put off by the weather, the event will still run rain or shine.

Neil Balloch was “lucky”. He was given darkened glasses to wear when the nuclear bomb went off. Others had to watch it with just their hands over their eyes, seeing the bones in their hands light up like an x-ray machine. But that was where Neil’s supposed luck ended.Neil – who lives in Atawhai – was one of 570 New Zealanders who witnessed the British nuclear testing at Christmas Island in the Pacific in the late 1950s. The ship he was on, the HMNZS Rotoiti, was stationed just 25 miles away from “ground zero”, letting off weather balloons. They saw the bomb dropped and sailed through the radiation zone as acid rain fell on them.Later, they sat on the beach of Christmas Island drinking beer and catching and eating fish from the radiation zone.He says, at the time he’d never heard the word “nuclear” and they had no idea of the side-effects of radiation. “We had no idea, when the bomb went off it was just a sense of wonder. Look at this amazing thing, fancy seeing something like that? We never thought it would be more than that.”Six decades on, Neil is one of about 60 Kiwis still alive who witnessed the bomb testing. Many died of various cancers and Neil himself has many medical issues, including cancer. His first wife struggled to give birth, and when she did her children and grandchildren have suffered varying degrees of birth defects, including a

grandson born with a severe case of cleft-pallet. “He had no mouth,” explains Neil. “From the bottom of his nose to his chin was a hole. It took 14 surgeries to fix him.”For three decades the New Zealand Nuclear Test Veterans Association (NZNTVA) has fought for compensation for the veterans and also for the “innocent offspring”.A study by Massey University showed that the chromosomes of veterans at the testing have been “fragmented”, leading to long-lasting effects for “generations”. The study found that the chromosome damage in veterans at the testing was three times that of the normal population and on par with the Chernobyl clean-up workers.

The UK’s Daily Mirror newspaper reported that a British study showed that the wives of servicemen at the testing had three times the rate of miscarriage, children are five times more likely to die as infants, babies are three times more likely to be stillborn, veterans’ grandchildren are eight times more likely to have birth defects and are twice as likely to get childhood cancer. They reported that the problems are likely to last at least 500 years, or 20 generations.Veterans in the UK have attempted to sue the government for compensation, but have so far been declined the right to go to court. However, a decision last week by a UK coroner delivered an open verdict

on two nuclear test veterans saying they died of radiation-linked illness, which veterans, hope could open the door to compensation. The New Zealand government has never officially recognised that the veterans involved in Operation Grapple were exposed to radiation, nor offered any compensation.Last year, members of the NZNTVA met with then-veterans affairs minister, Michael Woodhouse, with two items on the agenda. To get the government to officially recognise that veterans were irradiated and for the government to make a public statement to that effect, and for the off-spring of veterans to be researched to establish if they are suffering genetic damage as a consequence of their father or grandfather's exposure to radiation. Both requests were declined.Neil says he feels sick when thinking back to what they witnessed. “It all makes me very angry. We were guinea pigs. After the bomb, they said radiation had been detected on our ship and we were told to turn on these sprinklers and hose the ship down. But the sprinklers didn’t work because they had been rushed in and they didn’t really have the fresh water to use them, all the fresh water was used to power the ship because it was a steam engine."Neil says he wants the government to acknowledge the radiation they suffered and to pay compensation, "not for me but for my children and grandchildren, that's what makes me really irate."

No compensation for nuclear bomb ‘guinea pigs’

Drivers often get frustrated when they are delayed by road works, but Higgins Contracting’s super-cheerful stop-go girl Cindy Thompson is doing her best to change all that. For the last three weeks, Cindy has been helping traffic flow at the road works at the intersection of State Highway 6 and Aniseed Valley and Edens roads. The road has been reduced to one lane while the intersection is being widened to make it safer and the stop-go team have been busy keeping the traffic moving. But instead of becoming annoyed at the delays, many of the drivers are enjoying interacting with the smiley Cindy. Burly trucks drivers can be seen laughing and car drivers tooting as Cindy waves, signals and dances her way through the day.“You have to be very aware of the traffic in this job but I also like to interact with the drivers,” Cindy says. “I have lots of people who smile and say ‘you have made my day’ - I feel I have done my job if I can make one person smile.”Cindy says she loves her job and, despite the theatrical signals and amusing dance moves,

takes it seriously. After making “the bad decision to leave school at 15” and spent a few years working in factories, she is also enjoying being outdoors. “When I did the training for this job with Allied Work Force they said you have to smile and be happy because you are the face of the company,” she says. “I guess I just take that a little further than most,” she says.Cindy is also cheering up her workmates who admit they are enjoying her antics as much as the drivers. “Nobody likes being stuck in traffic so it’s nice that Cindy can brighten up their day,” says Higgins’ surfacing foreman Alan Hosking. The road works are expected to be completed by the end of this week.

Nelson Airport upgrade, what would you like to see?

Some better system for collect-ing bags etc other than outside

in the cold and rain. Antoinette Wood.

Lower airfares.Karyn Thomas.

Forget the terminal. Lets get a longer runway so we can land

bigger planes. Geoff Trevathan.

Improved baggage claim and longer runway. Our region is

screaming for that. Nothing wrong with the terminal. Andrea Grocott.

A cafe that stays open till the last flight leaves. Vanessa Cullen.

Better access, by that I mean di-rect flights to some of the smaller

places in NZ. Jo Cotton.

Definitely another cafe or cafe contractor that opens earlier, or

stays open until the last flight leaves. On a Sunday night closes at 7, I think. I've been delayed a couple of times for a hour or so, and they close the cafe leav-ing you with nothing to eat or drink. Jeff McLaren.

To be able to drive straight into the carpark without having to

crawl past the terminal first, dodging

pedestrians, taxis and rental cars. Vicki Reid.

A bigger area for short-term pick up and drop off. Sue Sara.

Spend the money on a longer run way. Some directs to / from

Aussie would be great for Nelson all around. We don't need a flashy terminal, it's all good how it is. Diana McClelland.

I actually don't mind the bag-gage claim or the airport as it is.

If the upgrade leads to increased fares then please leave as is! Cheaper fares and more destinations are what we need. Rachel Boyack.

Secure, safe, children's play area suitable for under 5s. I have of-

ten ended up stuck with my two year old waiting for delayed flights at Air NZ, it's a nightmare. Jezamine Dunlea.

The baggage claim area is awe-some. Leave it like that.

Lauren Rasmussen.

SPCA pours money into desexing cats. Do you think it's a good idea?

Make it available to everybody. Charge those without "hard-

ship cards" a little more, but even those without cards struggle. I know of a few people who can't afford to get their pets desexed even though they don't claim

benefits. Carole Krimchanski-Cooper.

Totally all for it. I think it's a very generous offer SPCA are doing.

Jo B Phil Borland.

If you can't afford an animal, don't get one simply because

it's lovely. The SPCA are helping sort the problem that others have created. Harsh, I know, soo many animals suffer needlessly. Great the SPCA are there for animals in need. Karen Rait.

This is awesome, but it seems like people think this should be the

norm. The SPCA are not there to pay for your pets. If you can't afford basic health care then don't get pets in the first place. This act of kindness from the SPCA will help prevent thousands of more un-wanted animals but it is a privilege, not a right. It's awful how something is of-fered to those in need, out of the good-ness of their hearts, but then people in-stantly want more. Natalie Street.

Yes. But it needs to be fair. Nikky Lohmann.

Its great! But I think people need to really think about the real cost

of a 'free' kitten. Desexing needs to be a priority. Sarah Brown.

If you live in the Nelson region, there's a pretty good chance that Wayne Eggers has had something to do with the tim-ber used to build your house.Wayne retired last week after more than 40 years in the timber trade in Nelson, and it's fair to say he has probably seen more posts, poles and timber loaded up on trucks and dispatched to build-ing sites than anyone else. And, after starting off logging trees for WE Wilkes in 1973 and ending his career as trade sales manager for Placemakers Saxton Rd branch, he has also been involved in every stage of the timber industry."I started off in banking and then went off on my OE," Wayne says. "It wasn't until I came back that I went into for-estry, logging post wood and poles for WE Wilkes Appleby plant."Then Odlins bought out Wilkes and the forestry and sawmill manager Royce Seymour retired, so I took over his job. There was quite a bit to it - managing Odlins forests and logging crews, and log buying and exporting. "But then Winstones bought out Odlins and sold off all the forests, so I became

the timber manager at the Queen St site. It was quite big back then - it extended halfway into where the Richmond Mall car park is now."Wayne completed his final career move nine years ago when Placemakers closed its Queen St site and relocated to Saxton Rd, where he continued his role as trade sales manager.Although Wayne says "wood is still wood", he has seen a number of big changes in the timber and hardware trade over the last 40 years. The intro-

duction of computerised cutting, pre-nailed frame and trusses and an ex-plosion in the range of "products that provide a solution for every building problem", have made building faster and easier. "These days, builders just fit a house together which is sad, but it's just the modern way. Time is money and all these changes mean they can build a house really quickly now."Wayne says he will miss working with all the great people in the timber and hardware trade and building industry.

2013 External Evaluation Review. As a smaller Educational facility, we endeav-or to offer our students a robust course of study which offers great employment opportunities. Testimonials from students shows en-joyment of training and although a comprehensive curriculum the Tutors are very helpful, also being able to com-plete so much over one year and the opportunity to gain Interna-tional qualifications to further their employment chances. Company Suppliers and In-ternational Examiners speak highly of the Institutes facili-ties and training.

The Nelson Training Centre has been offering students a pathway to employment in the local hospitality industry for 27 years. Free courses, cov-ering food preparation, res-taurant and cafe skills, work-place experience and learning skills, are complemented by the students own enthusiasm to succeed, and results in them gain-ing a National Certificate in Hospital-ity Entry Skills Level 2 or NCEA Level 2-Vocational Pathways-Service Sector, although it is also important for the

centre to ingrain in students an under-standing of the best workplace attitudes. The centre operates its own cafe, which is open to the public every Thursday and Friday of the school term, offer-ing students practical, real-life skills in customer service and cookery. When students have completed their course, Nelson Training Centre work to match their skills and attributes with a suitable

employer. They are now taking enrol-ments for 20th July and 12th October intakes. Contact them on 546 7636 to check if you are eligible for this free training.

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is a quali-fication which opens doors around the world. It is seen as the standard in English Language Teaching and the minimum requirement for teaching jobs throughout the world. The course attracts a wide range of people, from recent university graduates to people looking for a career change.

One recent CCEL graduate, Naomi Victor, reports “Do-ing the CELTA course was one of the best decisions I have ever made. The CEL-TA was a demanding and challenging course. I chose to do it because people who have done it have remarked at how much confidence it leaves you with to teach a class on your own. CCEL tutors are really helpful and will happily go out of their way to assist you, but also allow you to become more independent. The highlight of this course was the team-

work that our class had. Working with my classmates and learning from each other made for a pleasant journey to-wards becoming a teacher!”

If you’re thinking about studying, you don’t have to wait until 2016. Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technolo-gy (NMIT) has numerous programmes that begin in July. Just one example is the Certificate in Counselling and Social Work - a six month, full time programme. It is a

chance to learn more about counselling and social work and see which branch of social sciences you would like to study further. Tutor Chrissy Turton recalls past students by name and also describes the increasing requirement for degrees in counselling

and social work today. “Many of our students on this programme want to gain qualifications to de-velop their career, but are daunted by degree-level study. This pro-gramme gives them the skills and knowledge to confidently take their career further.” Check nmit.ac.nz to see the pro-gramme range available in July. Over 70% of NMIT’s programmes are available online, part time or as blend of online, work-based and face to face delivery.

Finding space on gallery walls can be tough for any artist, but for the first time in its history the Art@203 collective is put-ting out the call for new artists to come and exhibit on their walls.Art@203 has been going for more than seven years. It start-ed with five artists and has had as many as 11, but is now back down to seven.Founding artist Bob Rode-rique says many artists have come and gone over the years depending on their work at the time, and he’s keen for a few more to come forward and help keep the variety of the col-lective alive.“We’ve had people come, go and come back again. It’s a very nurturing environment and we all learn off each other.”Sheree Phyn just joined the collective a month ago and says she’s excited to be a part of it.“It’s wonderful to see the bal-ance of work here. It’s quite complementary, yet we are all very different. It’s a great at-mosphere, everyone is so wel-coming.”The gallery is above the

Unichem Pharmacy on Trafal-gar St and is open seven days a week. Bob says while they do have regular local shoppers, tourists make up about two-thirds of their sales. “We have paintings all over the world, Italy, England, Australia and more.”Artists who are a part of the collective pay a monthly fee and must do a few days a month working in the gallery. Ten per cent of each sale also goes to the collective for gen-eral maintenance.Bob says the gallery is popular because the work is of a high

standard and not overpriced. “We keep our prices low, down to Nelson prices for sunshine wages.”Sheree says being a part of a gallery that sells your work is a great experience. “It’s good be-cause you often get to meet the person who bought your art and you are able to keep your connection with the work. It can be a bit like giving up your baby.”Anyone interested in becom-ing part of the collective can email the group on [email protected] or just pop in and see them.

"The first shipment has now been sold and the available stock for September is running out quickly” says Pete Stukenberg from Richmond Cars and Com-mercials. For nearly two months he has been the new South Island deal-er for the range of Auto Trail campervans. Built on the high performance chassis of the new Fiat Diesel they are assembled and built in England. An impressive 150 hp and six speed sequential auto means you will no longer be holding up the traffic uphill as you tour New Zealand. “They are changing the face of mo-torhomes in New Zealand,” says Pete. “These sell for only $130,000 plus on road and yet I still see 2010 campers second hand sell-ing for $145,000 so that makes these a real bargain. And it’s all the latest technology and up-grades." And a number of locals agree as Pete’s first shipment are now all sold.

“I would seriously urge anyone considering buying one of these to come in and talk to us soon as. We are now placing our or-ders for September/October delivery and at the rate they are selling we will run out of stock.”Pete reckons that the design-ers and builders have really got it right with these campers and the public are responding well. “It just makes sense when you

have a look around the vehicle. Anti rattle cupboards, full insect screens that discretely fold away, a decent size engine and prob-ably the most important thing is that huge safety issue, a left hand entry cabin door. Do you believe that some other brand campers let you out right hand side and here in NZ that’s right into the traffic!” Pete says he has had great feed-

back from customers and said a number of features are really standing out. The permanent double bed, a full kitchen with pantry, a great sized bathroom with swivel toilet and separate shower and the huge amount of storage available. Add to that ceiling fans, a three way fridge with icebox and swivel front seats that quite frankly are like big lazy boys and all of the win-

dows have dark blinds so you get to cut out all the bright light when you need to.“Although you only need a car license to drive these the en-gineers have added a couple of great extras as well with trac-tion control to help get out of slippery grass camping sites and “hillstart” that helps make it eas-ier for the driver to take off up or down hill”. Pete also adds that there are a huge range of additions includ-ing solar and Sky TV so the op-tions are endless when it comes to turning one of these into your home away from home. Best of all says Pete, with this camper you just pull up, swivel the seats around and put on the jug. No hassle whatsoever and very, very comfortable and after all isn’t that what it’s all about? He is offering a full guided look around the vehicle they now have in stock where Pete will show you all the new Auto Trail has to offer. Phone Pete on 544 8000 to view.

Families in Business

Bridgette Pretty, Director Pretty Accounting Ltd, was called a “trailblazer” in the Certified Practising Accountant global InPractice magazine after setting up one of the first New Zealand CPA branded public practices. Bridgette says she wouldn’t use this wording for herself but has heard it used about her parent’s Pat and Christine Pretty and grandparents Jack and Pearl Pretty. Both sets of family members are well known in Nelson. Between them they were in the hospitality industry for a combined 60 years, 10 of which Bridgette worked with her parents. “I have inherited hard working genes,” she says; genes that have given her an unreserved respect for people, a great sense of humour and a zest for life. When she established her accountancy practice two years ago, Bridgette chose the name “Pretty Accounting” as a nod to her heritage. Bridgette’s mother Christine is practice manager which is quite a role reversal for the pair. The practice, located in Old St John’s Church Hall in Nelson and with a Motueka base is non-corporate and friendly, complementing Bridgette and Christine’s warm engaging personalities and personalised, plain speaking approach to accountancy. Contact Bridgette today for professional advice and services to support your business.

Toughen upThe men who flocked to NZ’s first gold rush in the Aorere Valley in 1878 faced harsh conditions. But experienced gold miner George Lightband, had no sympathy for those who gave up. He wrote

“some men, like children, have broken up their sluice boxes and cradles and gone home disgusted, some to their mothers, others to their wives.” He suggested they should eat a sheep’s guts every day to harden up.

Mums in the region will be treated to a night of fun and fashion next week at Nay-land Kindergarten’s annual fundraiser. The Girls Night Out! and Fashion Show is the major fundraiser for the kindergar-ten, and is a rare chance for mums to get dressed up and be pampered.Six models, made up of mums and teach-ers from Nayland Kindergarten, will strut their stuff down the catwalk wearing de-

signer fashion from Stacey Clothing, and hair and make-up by Cardells Hair and Ko Cosmetics. “It is a chance for mums to get dressed up and have a good time, tickets are an ideal Mother’s Day gift, and we are encouraging mums to bring along their mothers and children to treat their mums by buying them a ticket to the show,” says Jen Comer, organizing committee chairperson.

All ladies will receive a goody bag on the night, which includes product samples, discount vouchers, gifts, treats and maga-zines. There will also be stalls demonstrat-ing local beauty and well-being products, as well as raffles and spot prizes which include dining vouchers, an Interislander package, books, movie passes, and hair and beauty products.Last year’s event raised $3000 and was so

popular that a larger number of tickets are available this year. All funds received will go towards the development of the outdoor area, to increase the children’s creativity and exploration in a natural environment. The Girls Night Out! and Fashion Show will be held at Broadgreen Intermediate School Hall at 7.30pm on Friday May 15. Tickets cost $20, call 547 6313 or email [email protected] for details.

The Nelson under 6 rugby team after their first game of the season on Saturday,

against Waimea Old Boys at Neale Park.

Coach Kelvin Harvey says the boys were all excited

ahead of their first game. "Some had their mouth-

guards in the night before and were practising their

trys in the bath. They love it". Photo: Andrew Board.

Home town advantage not enough for MaristMarist bucked the trend of Nelson teams in the Tasman Trophy this weekend, losing to Central at Tra-falgar Park.Wakatu Hotel Marist were the only Nelson team to lose, going down 33-15 after a shocking first half.In the round's other games, Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys con-tinued its unbeaten run, this time against Moutere 30-17 at Jubilee Park in Richmond.Freeman Roofing Stoke also man-aged a good win after a few losses, taking apart Renwick 43-20.Kahurangi's win was just as sweet

but much, much closer. The Huia-Riwaka team beating Harlequins 17-16.Galbraith Group Nelson had the bye this weekend, but will be very keen to build on its only win of the season the week before. This weekend Nelson will host Central at Trafalgar Park, while Marist will travel to play Harle-quins; Waimea will travel to play Whitoi; Kahurangi will play Mou-tere, while Wanderers will host Renwick at Brightwater. All games kick off at 3pm.Stoke have the bye this week.

Nelson Netball Premier Grade will get un-derway at Saxton Stadium on Thursday night with teams having a “warm up” of two shortened games before the season properly begins the following week.On paper, Richmond Glass looks to be the team to beat as they set out to defend their title. Mikaela Powick is the only loss, as she is now at university, while a note-worthy acquisition is Jess Bygate who has transferred from Jacks. She will prove to be a formidable shooting duo with Nicky Rampton, while promising youngster Ai-mee Book will also bolster the offensive lineup. The remainder of Richmond’s ros-ter is tried and true with a wealth of talent and experience across the court.Richmond have had the benefit of game time at the Super Club Competition in Christchurch in early March, where they faced teams who played with more speed, however they were disappointed with their outings in Nelson the following week. Coach Kathleen Thornalley is looking forward to the eight team competition, however she does have to contend with the unavailability of her three Nelson Sparks basketball players in the coming weeks.Runners up from 2014, Jacks OPD, have lost the services of ace shooter, Ani Waitai, however Welsh shooter Rebecca James has returned to the side. Jess Drummond has returned to Nelson from Christchurch and is likely to make her presence felt through the mid court.Jacks claimed the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament trophy last weekend, when

they scraped through with a one goal win over Prices Pharmacy. Jacks will not be taking anyone lightly, as anyone is a threat on any given day. With the increase to an eight team compe-tition the Stoke club will have two teams. As beaten finalists in Premier 2, Stoke Sun City Panel & Paint will join club mates Stoke NBS, who finished third in 2014. The NBS team has the nucleus of last year’s lineup and is quite versatile, and will be going with a similar mantra of “horses for courses” which has proved successful in the past.Stoke Sun City Panel & Paint have four players from last year who are making the step to the elite grade and are joined by Charlotte Etheridge and Amber Grainger, who are no strangers to Stoke colours. Fresh out of college, Becky Green will play

in the mid court, while Garin College's tal-ented Kate Hand will get her first taste of premier netball as a dual-registered player. They will face a baptism of fire when they meet Richmond in their first competition game as it is a seeded draw.Prices Pharmacy will also have two teams in the competition. Mandy Whiting is again calling the shots for the A team which has a similar look about it, with the addition of former players – Shar Lowe (injury) Christta Burrows (overseas) and Dayna Whiting (study). The team was “pretty happy” with their performance at GH Tournament and have been working hard at their strength and conditioning for the past eight weeks. Specific team training will begin this week.Tom Alesena has the reins of Prices Black and has a fairly new team to work with. Shevaun Collier and Kelly Jenkins are expected to lead the offensive end, while McKenzie Taikato is the experience in the mid court and Bex Watene will call the shots in the defensive third. Prices Black enjoyed the GH Tournament last weekend and intend to consolidate their combinations to become com-petitive against all teams in the grade.Kalyssa Rasmussen will go from being the “baby” of Waimea Col-lege to premier experience all within the space of a year, as she is the only remaining player from 2014. There is a distinct legacy the girls in green and gold have to uphold, however the college is stacked with talent and there is no doubt the new squad will rel-

ish and benefit from the opportunities that playing in the top grade will present. With three returning from last year’s Prem 2 winning side, Nelson College for Girls are fortunate in having leaders in each third – Abbey Frankin in the shooting, Charlotte Timms in the mid and Merekara McGuinnetty in the defensive third. Co-coach Penny-Sue Franklin was impressed in their performance at GH Tournament, particularly the younger players who stepped up to the mark and by no means looked out of their depth against the more experienced opposition. NCG are excited to be in the elite grade and feel it will provide a good platform on which to build for the South Island Sec-ondary Schools Tournament later in the year.

Hope Community Church

A week of great eventsThe Hope Community Church’s week long Hopefest starts next Saturday May 16 with the incredibly popular Big Share Fair. The church held their first Hopefest in 2009 and it was such a success that it has become a bien-nial event. And it’s not sur-prising that it is the most popular event at Hopefest with the church collect-ing hundreds of donated items to give away to the community. Senior Pastor Donald Irvine says Hopef-est is all about giving back to the community and the Big Share Fair provides a generous and fun format for doing just that. People are issued with free Hope Notes when they walk in the door of the church and can “spend” the money on the wide range of items at the fair. “We get most of the items donated by our church family but things come from near and far. The donated items extend to food, goods and services either available on the day or by vouchers that can be redeemed at a time to suit both parties. Vouchers can be for the services of a handyman, babysitter or even a meal cooked for your family. Everyone gives so generously so we can give back to the com-munity” Donald says. The Big Share Fair will be held at the church 114 Ranzau Rd West

in Hope on Saturday May 16 from 9:30am – 12:30pm. Hopefest’s theme of giving to the community doesn’t stop there with the church holding a free Charity Quiz night on Friday May 22. In-

stead of keeping the prizes, the winning teams will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Mar-lborough Hospice, Nelson Marlborough Rescue Heli-copter, St John, Big Broth-ers Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services.

The quiz starts at 7:30pm.Hopefest also includes three free seminars from Tuesday May 19 to Thursday May 21 (see advertisement opposite for details) The seminars start at 7:30pm with no booking re-quired. Hopefest concludes with a free con-cert featuring Elvis impersonator Mark Borg from Australia along with local supporting artists on Saturday May 23 starting at 7:30pm followed by a Sunday morning church ser-vice on May 24 at 10am with guest speaker Jim Hickey. For more information on Hopefest go to the website www.hopefest.co.nz or phone the church on 544 6628.
