Our readings speak of what it means to us to be a disciple and how we relate that toother people. Do we recognise the presence of God and of Jesus in our daily life?Symbolically, the boat and those in it represent the church, the community in Christ.The `beloved’ disciple, who has a close relationship with Jesus, is first to recognise hispresence; the impetuous one can’t wait to meet Jesus again; the others are left tofollow with their catch. The joyful, fuller meaning of their lives resulting from thisencounter with Jesus had to be shared with others. To be a disciple of Jesus, it is notenough to say `I love you’ but to demonstrate that love by having the courage, whenthe call comes, to do difficult things – we have Jesus’ promise that he will always bewith us!
