Monticello Masons establish their Global Appearance Bro. Dallas O’Dell With so many different forms of communication being used today, it is important that Masons use all that is available to them. Our lodge has made a renewed effort to use all of them to our advantage. If you are reading this, you hold in your hands only one small piece. Our monthly newsletter attempts to be a re-source to keep you up to date on what is going on in the lodge with a little bit of Masonic knowledge thrown in. We also have our website, www.mastermason.com/monticello16. Due to technical issues, we were not able to access this for a period of time. This has been corrected and additional updated will be completed soon. Check there often for your Masonic information. If you desire up to the minute information about the lodge, check out our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Storytime with Santa Bro. Dallas O’Dell On Saturday, December 10th, the lodge hosted Storytime with Santa and our KIDs ID Program. With a great turn out of Masons and Job’s daughters, the well prepared for a large group of community members to join us. Home-made cookies (a special thanks to all the Masons and their spouses that donated) and a fresh pot of “GOOD’ coffee were in place. Even the Jolly O’ Man was there and ready to go. Families started arriving right on time with smiles of every good little girl and boy’s face. We quickly realized that children needed to go through the KIDs ID Program before they got their candy from Santa. Sticky fingers are hard to get a good print off of. However we were able to complete the ID packets on all thirteen children that attended. The turn out for participated was less then we had hoped but as long we can potentially help one child or family we have succeeded. Thanks for all that attending and helped make this a fun project.

What is the Symbolism of the East, West and South Gates?

-by Masonic Vibes In the system of Freemasonry, the Tem-ple of Solomon is represented as having a gate on the east, west, and south sides but none on the north. In reference to the historical Temple of Jerusalem, such a representation is wholly incorrect. In the walls of the building itself there were no place of entrance except the door of the porch, which gave admission to the house. But in the surrounding courts there were gates at all of the points of the compass. The Masonic idea of the Temple is, however, symbolic.

The Temple is to the Speculative Mason only a symbol, not an historical building, and the gates are imaginary and symbol-ic also. They are, in the first place, sym-bols of the progress of the sun in his daily course, rising in the east, culmi-nating to the meridian in the south, which it is the object of the third degree to illustrate, symbols of the three stages of youth, manhood, and old age, or, more properly of birth, life, and death.

Ladies at the Table The second annual Ladies at the Table was held at Clearwater Lodge #28. This Table Lodge is a joint venture between Monticello 16 and Clearwater 28 for the purpose of honoring our sig-nificant other who help support us in our Masonic Endeavor. The Ladies at the Table was es-tablish in Paris with Parallel to Masonry as Adoptive Lodges. At these lodges there were four degrees call; Female Apprentice, Craftswomen, Mistress, and Perfect Mason. The forth degree, being the summit of the Rite of Adoption is furnished with a table lodge. A table lodge consist of seven toast. We toasted to our wives, OES sisters, Bethel Guardians, women in military, housewives, decease ladies, and a fare-

well toast for a great night. Hopefully next year will host the Ladies at the Table at Monticello Lodge.

Wearing the Square and Compass

The square and compass together is a universal sign of our Fraternity and is recognized all over the world.

Masons as well as Non-masons associate the square and compass as our logo or trademark. They were original

tools of the building trade.

Remember back to when you were going through the degrees and you were taught about the square and the

level. The square was used by operative masons to square their work, but we were taught to use to govern al of

our actions with mankind. The square represents honesty, fairness, and virtue; it is also used as a badge the

badge of office of the Worshipful Master. The principal tenets of masonry are said to be contained within the

two points of the compass when spread out, which are friendship, morality, and brotherly love. When you use a compass to draw a circle,

one point remains in the center of the circle. That point represents the individual Mason. The circle represents the boundaries of his

world and the people he comes into contact with. He is always to live by those principals of friendship, morality, and brotherly love, in all

of his dealings with mankind, and especially with a Brother Mason. (1)

When a Mason wears the square and compass, whether it be a ring or other piece of jewelry, emblem on an article of clothing or hat,

tattoo, bumper sticker, etc. he is telling the world that he is a Mason. The mason is then held to a higher standard or scrutinized more in

greater detail for every action he might take. This is no different than an individual who wears or displays a religious emblem. The individ-

ual is letting the world know about their faith and beliefs. Other people watch the actions those individuals so they can criticize them for

what they do wrong rather those thing they do right. Most of us have probably heard someone say (if not us ourselves) that person is a

hypocrite. Look how they display their religious emblem and they act like that. How can they wear that or display that bumper sticker and

act that way or drive that way?

I know we all can remember the good things that have happened or tell a story how someone noticed we were displaying the square and

compass and what that meant to them or to us. But do we know about all the stories that might have been or are being told about our

actions to others while we wear the square and compass?

As Masons, we should always be striving to improve ourselves in masonry and to become a better person, husband, father, friend, and

especially a Brother Mason. This is not a completion amongst other brothers, but an individual’s goal to set his standards a little higher

than they were before.

When Masons get involved in their communities and display the square and compass at events it shows the non-masons we really do care

and want to help others. This might be done through KidsID events, books for schools, donating blood to the Red Cross, jumping in frigid

lakes to help Special Olympics, hosting fund raisers for scholarships, supporting the women and children shelters, helping out communi-

ties during flooding and clean-up operations, and the list goes on.

Just remember when you wear the square and compass, you could be the first impression of masonry to a non-mason. Let’s make that

first impression a great and lasting one and teach the non-mason about Truth, Relief, and Brotherly Love.

NorthStar Lodge #23 Table Lodge Northstar Lodge 23 hosted a Table Lodge on November 12, 2011 with free spaghetti dinner in Saint Cloud. Entertainment was provided by Radiant Moon Belly Dancers from Clearwater. It was very entertaining watching these women dancing while balancing sword on their head. Believe or not a couple of the women were in their mid40's. Plus it is just a shocking to hear a woman willing to reveal their age and brag about it. Why did they perform for us? The reason for performing to us this night is that one of the women who belongs to Radiant Moon is from Crisis Nursery that Northstar supports through it charitable contributions. The mission statement of Radiant Moon is to empower women of all sizes, ages, and shapes to find inspiration from their inner goddess; to become and achieve all they can be.

The Old Master’s Wages By MWB Neil Neddermeyer

I met a dear old man today Who wore a Masonic pin,

It was old and faded like the man, Its edges were worn quite thin.

I approached the park bench where he sat

To give the old brother his due. I said, "I see you’ve traveled east"

He said, "I have, have you?"

I said, I have and in my day Before the all-seeing sun

I played in the rubble with Jubala, Jubelo, and Jubalum.

He scolded, "Don’t laugh at the work my boy,

It’s good and it's sweet and it's true; And if you’ve traveled as you said

You should give these things their due.

"The word, the sign, the token, The sweet Masonic prayer, The vow that all have taken

Who have climbed the inner stair.

"The wages of a Mason are never paid in gold,

but the gain comes from contentment When you’re weak and growing old.

"You see I’ve carried my obligations

For almost fifty years. It has helped me through the hardships,

and the failures full of tears.

"I’m now losing my mind and my body Death is near, but I don’t despair. I’ve lived my life upon the level,

And I’ll die upon the square."

Sometimes the greatest lessons Are those that are learned anew.

And the old man in the park today Has changed my point of view.

To all Masonic brothers

The only secret is to care. May you live upon the level.

May you part upon the square.

“Are you a Mason?”

Bro. Dallas O’Dell So the other day at work, I was talking about an upcoming public event at Lodge, several of my co-workers started asking questions about the event. Being the project Chairman I knew all the details. And as you can guess the questions turned to Masonry. Are you a Mason? Yes. What are the Masons? A fraternity that strives to make good men great. Aren’t Masons the ones with all the secrets and rituals? There are no Masonic secrets that cannot be found on the internet with just a little research. Meetings are held based on rituals that have been passed down through the years; not because of a grand scheme but out of respect to tradition. The rumors spread in books, movies and even by some of our best friends are based on here say and lack of knowledge about the Masons. Are the Masons a religious cult? No. To become a Mason, a man must believe. He may believe in God, Allah, Jesus, Buddha or any other deity as long as he believe in something greater then himself. Out of respect for all religions, Masons use the term ”Supreme Architect” to represent each member’s chosen deity. I thought I had pretty good answers; Clear and concise. As I returned to my workstation I was proud of myself for sharing my Masonic knowledge with my little piece of the world. But then it hit me. I had missed an opportunity. It is every Mason’s obligation to be the best man he can be. But it is also his responsibility to recognize other great men and offer them the same chance. A common phrase in Masonry is “2B1ASK1.” Some may say that during my conversation none of my co-workers asked how to be a Mason. But that is because I didn’t ask the most important question,” Would you be interested in becoming a Mason?” I plan on correcting that tomorrow. Have you missed the same opportunity? Who is that

guy in the lodge? September 15, 1861 a strange and wonderful thing happened in the town of Monticello, Minnesota, more specifically in the lodge room of Monticello Lodge No. 16, a baby was born. Monticello Lodge No. 16 was located in the upstairs room of a general store owned by Mr. Samuel Adams. Mr. Adams and his family lived in the lower part of the building behind the Monticello general store and rented the upper floor to the Lodge. On the night of September 15, 1861 many prominent local citizens had gather in the living quarters of the Adams family to discuss the gather-

ing clouds of war. Since conditions in the family quarters were a bit crowded, a very pregnant Mrs. Adams was escorted to the Lodge hall where she would be more comfortable. Soon after she had been made comfortable in the Lodge hall Mrs. Adams went into labor. Dr. James W. Mulvey, the junior warden of the Lodge, was called to aid her and a short time later delivered into the world a baby boy named Henry Rice Ad-ams. The baby was to grow up to have a Masonic career as unusual as his birth place. In 1884 Henry Rice Adams was made a Master Mason in the same room he was born in. In 1903 Henry became the Worshipful Grand Master of the state of Minnesota. On March 30, 1927, Henry was fatally stricken while attending a com-munication of Minnesota Lodge, No. 224. A highly successful Masonic life ended as it had started - In a Masonic Lodge *Article from "The Whitesburg Trestle Board" of Whitesburg Masonic Lodge No.
